Big, Bigger, Biggest. What was yours?

It's all about size.

We live in a society that celebrates Big.

So tell me about it. Have you ever had the urge to make the biggest pie in the world, or to buy the hugest amount of smoked salmon?

What was the largest amount of people you've cooked for? How many cream puffs did you devour in one sitting?

Don't worry about sounding like you're too big for your britches. Get out your bragging rights and dance. Talk Big. (About food, of course.)

I made over 100 empanadas from scratch last year for the 4th of July. Not that many, I suppose, but it looked like an empanada factory in my kitchen for HOURS.

I once successfully barbecued a whole 18 pound, "packer cut", untrimmed, beef brisket on my Weber Genesis. I kept the temp under 300 for the 24 hours it took and kept adding wood chips to the smoker box for the first 10-12 hours. It may not sound like much; you had to be there.

My daughter-in-law's famiy and I cooked for 300 for their wedding reception.

Those are all some pretty Big Things.

Did any drama happen while this was going on?

For example, once I dropped a bowl holding two dozen eggs on the floor. I really can not describe what it was like. But it was very bad. Very bad, indeed.

I make BIG pancakes. Like, basketball diameter pancakes. I don't serve small ones in tall stack. Nope.

Probably the "cathedral" wedding cake that mother-in-law and I made for a friend's wedding. If I remember correctly, it had 8-10 different cakes stacked on top of each other plus a plastic piece that resembled the "doors" of the cathedral and a small cake on top of that with a spire on top. It was such a nervewracking cake to make and quite over the top, exactly what the bride wanted!

I make hundreds of hamburgers on a daily basis. WORD

For a while I was cooking for a family of five, two small children who ate like birds included. For some reason, I once felt compelled to make the biggest lasagna ever. It was seven layers and I had to construct it and bake it in a roasting pan! We ended up having to invite friends over and on top of that, there was a Sparkletts guy delivering water to us so we packed him up a huge slice in tupperware. I'm sure he thought we were insane, but I know he was happy to get a free dinner.

Okay, this is totally off the wall, but have you ever been to Pimp That Snack? I love the site. So anyway, I decided to pimp a Drake's Yodels with chocolate genoise and a filling of freshly whipped cream and fluff. I covered it with a chocolate ganache. It turned out pretty well (the cake broke up a bit, but I was able to piece it back together, and it was towards what I decided was the back of the cake so my friends didn't see it. Essentially, it was an enormous Swiss roll. I was SO proud of myself. And I will never do it again, though Reese's Peanut Butter cups do call my name...


try cooking for 18 Marines back home from the current war in the holy land.
our brave soldiers are not allowed to eat pork over there so you can obviously guess what they wanted. i smoked 3 large boston butt pork roasts and 40 slabs of ribs. it was quite a bit of work but with 18 Marines here i felt safe as hell.

These are all very cool stories - and each one is very different!
