Appetizers & cocktails circa 1964...

A friend of mine asked me to cook for his 45th birthday party early next year. Not being one to procrastinate, especially when it comes to food, I am already trying to find recipe ideas for appetizers and such that originate from the early '60's. Any ideas?

I have a book called Food In Vogue: Six Decades of Cooking and Entertaining that contains the info you need (or at least part of it). The problem is that it's in storage. I have GOT to get that stuff out because I could have referred to my books about a million times, just in the last 3 months. Try getting your hands on a copy of that book.

Here's a start on recipes.

Recipes here too.

Sounds like fun!

Cocktail franks (or mini meatballs) in a chafing dish, sauced with a mix of grape jelly and chile sauce

Homemade Chex Party Mix

Sidecars, manhattans, Anything off the Trader Vic's menu. Have Fun!

What a great idea! Rumaki has quite a history as an appetizer, as do sweet and sour meatballs, tomato aspic (you have to do a mold of some sort!) and the old watermelon bowl.

For an interesting twist on the grape jelly and chili sauce for the meatballs/cocktail franks, substitute a can of cranberry sauce for the grape jelly. Less sweet and a little unexpected!

I remember my parents entertaining quite a lot back then and it seemed there were always cocktail franks (pigs in the blanket) and chicken a la king in party shells. My mother used to make these from scratch! Cocktails included a lot of Tom Collins' and whiskey sours.

Is that when fondue pots were all the rage?

I keep seeing images of frozen TV dinners (the kind in foil trays, wrapped in foil) set on TV dinner trays in front of the family black & white console TV and of course either I Love Lucy is on or the Ed Sullivan Show (?).
That would be a pretty cool party! Oh, the hostess should dress like Donna Reed! Hilarious!

Mai Tai's....I agree with anything from Trader Vics.

If you do a tiki theme with those trader vic cocktails- see here for tiki meatloaf.

Pigs in a blanket - just cut the refrigerator can of croissants in little pieces, wrap around mini-weenies, and bake. Super good and timely! My mom says- shrimp cocktail was big then too.

i have started collecting recipe books and just got a fun one for fondue. The pages and colors are such a throwback. I was thinking of doing that kind of party as i have no clue what trader vic's is.

Gotta have a Harvey Wallbanger in your hand when you answer the door...

You could always watch some old movies and TV shows from the mid-60s... Since movies and TVs are usually all about the in thing of the moment, you should get some pretty accurate ideas about what was trendy.

To me, the fondue rage was just a few years later, more like very late 60s through early 70s. But I was pretty young, so who knows...

You've got to pick up "I Like You - Hospitality Under The Influence" by Amy Sedaris. She's an absolute genius when it comes to vintage food and entertaining practices. You won't believe it until you read it and it's good for many, many, many chuckles.

I won't say anything else, but beware of the jello molds!

Thanks to all! These ideas give me a great head start!

Drink: Rob Roy, Harvey Wallbanger, Tom Collins, Whiskey Sour & Ripple (just kidding on the last one...haha). Appetizer: Anything on a Ritz like summer sausage or ring bologna, and sharp cheddar cheese - even pb&j, shrimp cocktail on a rimmed glass with cocktail sauce in the center. Ditto the Chex party mix - homemade.

How about a bouquet of parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme? ;)

Sounds like a fantastic idea!
