Accidental food finds
I've been looking for Romanesco broccoli ever since I first saw it on TV. Not looking terribly hard, to the point where I'm thinking about ordering online, but I keep an eye out for it when I'm shopping. It looks interesting.
Imagine my surprise when I was at the local chain grocery store and I was walking past the cauliflower display...and lately they've begun stocking cauliflower in purple, gold and green as well as white...and I noticed that the green stuff had a different pattern to it. A closer look, and yes, this isn't the roundish variety, this is the pointy spiral Romanesco...it was a fairly small head, and the points weren't as pronounced as some I've seen photos of, but these are definately not the usual. It was labeled "brocoflower" with the same price as all the other variants.
It's possible what I got is actually a cross and not a true Romanesco, but I was happy to find it. At least this is close. Maybe later I'll find more of them, with even nicer peaks and spirals.
Yes, this isn't as exciting as finding a truffle in the portobellos, but it was a nice surprise.
You find anything interesting at the grocery lately?

I've seen that in grocery stores lately also! Does it taste like one vegetable more than the other? What are you going to use yours in? The last time I was grocery shopping I nearly purchased a head of it, but decided against it. Maybe I will this time.

It's almost gone already. I just steamed it. It tasted pretty much like what the other green cauliflower tasted like to me -- about 2/3 cauliflower and 1/3 broccoli.
What I really like about the colored cauliflower is, well, the color. I always try for different colors on the plate, so I don't end up serving "the beige meal." And I love cauliflower, but white can be a little boring, particularly if the other side is some kind of rice or potato or pasta-like food.

I've seen it in grocery stores in the past, but not recently. I have to admit, I was a little weirded out by the spikey look to it...so prehistoric dinosaur like...which dinosaur am I thinking of? The Stegosaurus?

@wookie, the spikey, prehisoric dinosaur look is its greatest selling point in trying to get children to eat their veggies. A friend of mine did it with her very picky 4 year old son and served it up with tales of cavemen and clubs and dinosaurs and raptors and the kid wolfed it down and then became as strong as Bam Bam. You had to be there, I guess, but it was a major awwww moment.

here's what i found at the H-mart last night. I'm so excited about these packets applications for camping. I also like them because sometime you want to try an ingredient but don't want to fork out for a giant bottle (our friends already call our apt "the house of condiments") these are .39 cents! what a bargain! I see stir fry in my camping future!
