JEP, I LOVE potatoes. Sweet potatoes, fingerlings (russian banana is my favorite), yukon golds, twice baked russets, rustic fries...you name it. Potatoes are one of the best simple foods on earth. One of my favorite dishes is roasted garlic mashed potatoes with carrot flecks and dill: http://figswithbri.com/?p=78
I also love baking them in our wood stove or in a camp fire for more smoky flavor:

As long as potatoes are involved, as far as I'm concerned the meal is going to be good (but not from a box).

srhcb--really? Hilarious! Now that is unusual potato use:)
FigswithBri--thanks for linking your site with the delicious recipes & amazing photos! Couldn't agree more...nothing beats a meal that includes America's favorite vegetable.

I love potatoes. Keep it simple. Mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, pan fried potatoes, potato soup. Yum. I could go for some now.

As per your request, JEP ... This afternoon I blogged about Agriculture Canada's Potato Research Centre releasing 15 new species of potato. The Potato Research Centre up in Fredericton is the same place that developed the infamous Yukon Gold potato. I also include the recipe for my 15-year-old son's No-Measure Garlic Mashed Potatoes.

Of course you can always take a raw potato and stick it over the tailpipe of a car (belonging to someone else) so that the exhaust is plugged.
If the engine is left idling, the built up back pressure will kill the motor, but if the driver revs the engine the potato will usually be blown off or explode.
Great Fun!

I had a Mr. Potato Head and loved him so much that my kids had one also. For a potato, he was a good man.
Here's a tater tip: when putting a chicken on the rotisserie, shove a potato in the chicken's cavity first and it will help the rotisserie rod anchor with more stability. (a lemon works well also but it's not lemon month)
My favorite new thing to do with potatoes is gnocchi. (Lidia's recipe) We did half the batch with sage beurre noisette and another dinner with a leek/sweet Italian sausage ragu. They turned out so well I can't wait to make them again.

My favorite new thing to do with potatoes is gnocchi.
That's got to be my favorite thing to do with russets. If not gnocchi, potato pie (which I think I posted somewhere on this site).
I tend to veer away from white potatoes. I don't buy Denise Austin's schpiel about "vitamins," etc. She didn't get that body eating potatoes. They metabolize into pure sugar. Like other foods with limited health benefits, spuds are fine in moderation. I treat them like sweets when I figure out how much I should eat.
I do love sweet potatoes and they have more to bring to the nutrition party. I hope they count in Potato Month!
I had a Mr. Potato Head as well. Definitely a fun toy and a fond memory :D

Thanks LPC for your link as it's an informative & tasty post!
srhcb--your story reminds me of a friend who thought it was great fun to entertain friends by going out & blasting off a "potato shooter"--personally, I would rather eat potatoes that shoot them out of tube!
What your favorite restaurant potato?
JEP at 7:30AM on 02/22/08
I'm not a big fan of the potato (I know, I know, it's weird) -- but I do love the sweet potato! Earlier in the week I made a sweet potato-escarole-mushroom gratin, and it's now my favorite sweet potato recipe. Last night I chopped up the leftovers, warmed it on the stove, sprinkled it with hot sauce and ate it with fried eggs as a hash. YUM!
Mr. Potato Head is a classic -- has anyone seen the ones that are made to look like Star Wars characters? I kid you not -- Artoo Potatoo and Darth Tater!
