Your restaurant dessert of choice?

So you're at a great restaurant, have just finished your main course, and are ready for the grand finale. What do you order?

For me, I can never turn down house-made sorbets and ice creams if they're available! That, plus an espresso is the perfect way to end a meal.

99% of the time I order check please, and a doggie bag. There is usually enough left for lunch or dinner the next day and not a spec of room in my tummy.

1% of the time, if I'm still hungry, I can be tempted by a coconut or banana cream pie.

A cup of coffee or dessert coffee would be a more likely choice if others at the table are having dessert, but it will make it much harder to get any sleep. A piece of decadent chocolate candy would be great!

Dessert wines and bread puddings are my downfall.

I design and make all the desserts doe a local bistro here and this is a fantastic question. Right now my cardamom and Madagascar bourbon vanilla bean infused white chocolate Creme brûlée is selling very well. I personally am a sucker for anything housemade and deeply chocolatey. I do hope there are more responses. I would love to know more about what people want!

I'll get dessert at a restaurant maybe 3-4 times a year. If I do, it's usually vanilla ice cream. When I do, the server is usually surprised because s/he would have just got done throwing out 1/3 of my entree...but I'm a slave for my cravings. Like Jello, there's always room for ice cream! (I'll lose my meal in a couple of hours anyway because I'm lactose intolerant)

One of the best desserts I've had in recent history was at a restaurant around the corner from our place. Ginger creme brulee. The top layer was perfect, light brown and a very thin, even coat, which shattered with a tap of my spoon. The body was cool and had a smooth, creamy texture. The ginger wasn't overpowering, but not a ghostly essence. I closed my eyes and toootally savored each spoonful.

I wish we could go more often since it's a casual jeans-okay type of place, but with sushi being $25/roll and the creme brulee in a standard ramekin for $10, it's not a place where I can eat at nightly. The entrees are fairly inexpensive though, running between $20-40.

I will often order creme brulee if it is on the menu. I love chocolate but not so much at the end of a big meal. The cardamom vanilla bean white choc creme brulee sounds wonderful!!


I like desserts with lots of components and layers that I can deconstruct, somewhat maliciously, with my fork or spoon. Somehow things with lots of parts are more satisfying to eat. Chocolate and interesting fruit desserts always attract me, especially if they're relatively low on dairy (lactose intolerant).

There's always room for creme brulee. Classic, any delightful, inventive flavor, a brulee trio, I don't care. As long as it is paired with a dopa espresso and natural sugar (and perhaps a twist), life is good.

tarte au citron! anything citrus or raspberry calls my name... or profiteroles, especially if they're homemade and come with ice cream.


i also have a weakness for bread puddings. But sorbet is so delicious and cleansing especially after a heavy meal that I love that as well.

I'm one that goes to restaurants most often just for dessert. I llike a wide range...cheesecake (favorite), creme brulee, rich chocolate anything, addicted to anything nutty...yes, I'm all about the dessert course.

Espresso is a definite 'yes, please' for me; my favourite dessert is quite simple ('zuppa inglese'), but does not seem to exist outside of Italy, so when I'm there, I have it at every opportunity that presents itself.

Dessert wine or coffee, coconut cake and creme brulee!

A couple of decades ago, it was always apple pie/cobbler a la mode.
Several years ago, I would always order the creme brulee. Then every restaurant was serving it, whether they knew how to do it right or not.
Then I fell in love with the bread pudding a chef friend of mine makes, but I found that all bread puddings are not created equal.
Then I had a great key lime pie and went on a citrus based dessert kick. Still love it. Lemon bar would be good right now.
BUT, the most satisfying desserts are the chocolate ones, esp. if they are made in house and the server promises that it is supremely rich.
That and coffee. Or if it's the right chocolate, I will finish my red wine with it.
If I'm too full for dessert (HA!), I will finish with a port or half Tuaca & half Tia Maria on the rocks...like candy in a glass.

I also should add that I absolutely love lemon desserts (tarts, cookies, sorbet, etc), but since I also love making them (homemade lemon curd is just so satisfying!) I don't usually order them in restaurants. Same goes for Apple crisp/cobbler. It's just sooo good homemade, warm out of the oven!

Hardly ever have dessert, but I'm a sucker for a really good, classic, well-made crème brûlée or a super-moist bread pudding. Once in a while, a soufflé is awesome. Again, if it's not top-notch, I have no interest.

The best crème brûlée that I recall eating was served in The Restaurant at the Hotel Bel Air. And there was one in Paris (can't remember the restaurant) that was also amazing.

I've had a few really awesome soufflés, but there was one with banana at the Polo Lounge that was knee-weakening.

I do find that I'm sometimes disappointed with desserts at very fancy restaurants -- they're sometimes so overdone, and I think simpler tastes are best in desserts.

One of the best desserts I've ever has was the bread pudding at a restaurant called Clementine in San Francisco. They must have soaked the bread for days, because there wasn't a hint of it in the texture, it was so smooth and rich and luscious -- but the flavor was unmistakably brioche.

(JEP - have you ever been to Chikalicious in NYC? 3 courses, all dessert, plus a wine pairing. Name a time and I'll meet you there! :)

Creme brulee or creme caramel.

Citrus tart! Lemon, lime, blood orange etc. it doesn't phase me. I love 'em all!

I'm not a chocolate person, so I steer clear of those dishes. I also can't stand custard, so that rules out creme brulee and bread pudding.

But, I am a fan of fruit pies. And anything with whipped cream!

Oh, and anything with a caramelly base eg. banoffi pie, pecan pie etc.

Give me a Tawny Port! (or 2 if I am on vacation) The hubs goes for anything with pecans, chocolate and caramel together.

My boyfriend and I have a liking for brownie desserts. At any restaurant we go to, the first thing we do is look on the dessert menu to see if there is any brownie dessert. We don't necessarily get it for dessert on the same night, but we will always make plans to come back and try it. So far, we haven't found anything that beats the T.G.I. Friday's Brownie Obsession. It is SO SO bad for us, but we make it a treat and enjoy every last bite.

a glass of B&B, a cup of black dark roast coffee and a slice of warm pecan pie.

I absolutely love Tiramisu, and any cheesecake without fruit.

@cucinacecilia: phew! I thought i was the only person that liked cheesecake as dessert. Granted, it is rich, and probably too big to eat after finishing off a app/main. But sharing takes care of that.

As for other desserts, as long as it has quality dark chocolate, and it's made in house (the dessert, not the chocolate), it's a go.

Funny thing is that I usually order dessert the first time we try a restaurant, but seldom after that. And although I love chocolate, I usually will order cheesecake at a restaurant, f they have it, because cheesecake isn't something I tend to make at home.

I'm also a sucker for tiramisu, but lately it hasn't been all that good at a lot of places. I guess it's one of those things that got popular and then everyone was serving it, whether they knew how to make it or not.

Recently, though, I saw a chocolate peanut butter cake that sounded really good, and I just ordered it to go. Solved that problem of being a bit too full for dessert.

I took my friend's mother out for lunch today and she wanted to go to Applebee's. They have a 3 course special including dessert and we ordered from that. I got key lime pie, she got a hot fudge sundae. They were both served in identical little glasses. Have you ever been served pie in a glass? Me either! The waitress seemed surprised at my shock - I thought she brought the wrong thing. There were some broken graham crackers on the bottom. She asked, "Were you expecting a piece of pie?" I said, "Uh, yeah, since that's what it says on the menu." She explained that it's just like pie, but served in a glass. Alrighty then.

Tiramisu! If I see it on the menu, I have to get it.

Even though I should not have any chocolate... I have a weakness for it. Last night, I finished dinner with a flourless chocolate torte with milk chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream - it was sinful!!!!

Something creamy, moussy, and decadent. I rarely have dessert and if I'm going to splurge, it's going to be a big one.
