What popular foods do you hate?

The sandwich question started me thinking about this -- there are a few foods that everyone seems to love that I can't stand (egg salad!!). What about you? Are there any foods that make everyone else go, "Mmmmmm," that make you say, "Ick!"

90 Comments:

Any creamy substance in the proximity of a savoury dish is an abomination.
And dreadfully popular here: A sandwich is not a sandwich without butter, and perhaps mayonnaise, salads have creamy dressing, soups are loaded with dairy substances... everyone just loves this stuff, but I'm feeling queasy just thinking of it.

Cream Cheese - it's the worst. The taste, the texture . . . how people try to hide it in otherwise delicious desserts . . . ugh!

@mongoose..........i just wrote about butter on sandwiches on the graham cracker thread. my mother always did that, even if she also added mayo or mustard. she was Canadian. any connection? nobody else seems to have done that. I can see it with something that could soak through the bread, but she did it with meat and cheese too.

@moibec........with you there. No raw meat or fish for me.

I have a problem with almost anything cooked at a chain restaurant, especially the ones that assert to be "neighborhod" joints. Even if the food is good, I can't get over the marketing. That just makes for a bad experience. I know this is off-base from the question, but TGI-McFunsters (Bourdain) just slays me.

To make sure my post isn't deleted by right-thinking moderators, I guess I simply hate salads made in America at "popular" joints. Even some good restos I've eated at pimp out these crap "garden salads." What, did the gardener grow up in a barn?

@chiffOnad........calling Cool Whip food is a real stretch. LOL

PerkyMac, my mom always buttered sandwich bread. I do too. She was born & bred in New England.

Watermelon! I used to be embarrassed about it, but now I'm sort of fond of the fact that I have unpopular opinions.

I'm such an alien about watermelon that I once bought a so-called seedless one (to make into a fruit basket for others) and spent the next hour infuriated because I had to pick out all those seeds.

PerkyMac, I don't know if it's a Canadian thing, because my family does that, too. I have never really understood that, either. Even on peanut butter sandwiches. Isb' the peanut butter enough?

Mayonaisse. I just enver understood it. Egg salad is definitely another one. I think that the mayo things comes into play for that one, though. The smell alone is all wrong.

Potato chips. I have never really understood their appeal, even though I like other kinds of chips (soy, corn, tortilla...). Pringles are *okay*, but only in a hunger pinch.

mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup - in anything.

peanut butter and jelly. triple yuk!!!!

although peanut butter, banana and honey is pretty good.

We call Cool Whip "Chemical Whip". As for popular foods...cheese doodles. frito lay corn chips. cheese puffs. any food my teenagers eat in vast quantities is usually awful, but certainly popular!

I think the butter/creamy spreads on sandwiches tendency has northern climate origins. I grew up in Florence, and to me a sandwich is bread and a single layer of fairly low-moisture meat. Nothing slippy or oozy. Danish sandwiches just freak me out, and asking for it plain is not enough; it is necessary to specify 'NO butter, NO remoulade, NO mayonnaise...' and have them give me odd looks, as if they suspect me of being on some sort of ridiculous diet. Awkward.

I have quite a few: curries would be the first one (and I was born and raised in London, go figure). Ranch dressing, Cesar salad and most lettuces (I do love greens - rocket, watercress, dandelion greens, red lettuces, etc., but not that light green watery tasteless stuff), pumpkin pie (or pumpkin anything, for that matter. I have nothing against orange foods, I swear - I quite fancy butternut squash, sweet potatoes and carrots). The list is apparently longer than I thought it would be because I could go on :-)

I hate hot dogs. I cannot abide most cooked fruit and hence do not really eat pie (the crust doesn't do anything for me either, so why bother). I do not like hot cereal. I will not eat yogurt unless it is smooth (no fruit on the bottom - gross!). Except for the hot dogs, my food dislikes are mainly texture problems as opposed to flavor. There are more, but you get the idea.

I loathe tiramisù, and I'm very tired of that "molten chocolate cake" that's on every menu in Manhattan.

mayo, eggs (scrambled, fried, boiled, etc.), hot dogs (because my mom made them EVERY Saturday), okra. All of them have smells and textures that turn my stomach.

I can't stand pumpkin pie or pumpkin desserts either, brooke29 - but I also love squash, carrots, and sweet potatoes. As a vegetarian, I am constantly called into question for my hatred of mushrooms, especially when the only veg item on a resto's menu is the ubiquitous portobello burger. Yuck.

Doesn't everyone butter their sandwiches? No matter what is on it, it always has butter.... (hehe I am Canadian)

I really really dislike fried eggs! I think it's because my dad hates eggs in all forms (and complains about the smell whenever I scramble them or make an omelette at home) and my mom never made us fried eggs when I was a kid, because she doesn't like them. The runny yolk just freaks me out, even though I have no problem eating raw eggs in other forms (homemade mayo, tiramisu, cookie dough).
On the buttered sandwich topic, I was shocked my first time in England to find that almost every sandwich had a ton of butter on it, especially the ubiquitous "baguette" sandwiches. I have found this to be especially true in Cambridge, where I've spent most of my time in England. I have developed a sandwich eating ritual there of scraping off the 1/4 cup or so of butter from every sandwich before consuming. I get a lot of strange looks...
For a while I hated chocolate, but I've been getting over that in the past month or so

calling Cool Whip food is a real stretch. LOL

I fully agree! LOLOL. OK, to rephrase: I hate whipped white petroleum products masquerading as food. Is that better? :D

My mom never buttered a sandwich, BTW. I do find that I like some type of spread on bread to hold everything together. This is usually some type of pesto or sun dried tomato spread or onion confit I make myself. I only like mayo or mustard on very specific sammies.

I am such a picky eater! Mayonnaise, sushi, cheese, tomatoes (unless cooked and crushed), citrus fruit and strawberries (texture), bananas (unless made into bread), cottage cheese, peanut butter on bread, ah, the list could go on, I'm sure!

My dad has always put a bit of butter on his sandwiches, too. He's from International Falls, MN, on the Canadian border.

Those popular "fruit snacks" in the shapes of cartoon characters made with corn syrup. They're disgusting.

I detest papaya, too. The smell reminds me of burned hair. My mom loves it and used to serve it to my siblings and me. I'd run out of the kitchen when she cut it . . . the sight and smell of that nest of black seeds . . . I'm losing my appetite for lunch now.

coffee. mayo. mustard.

Oh, and I absolutely can't stand oatmeal and granola, and don't care one bit for peanut butter...why do I feel like I should be hanging my head in shame now?

Almost all fruit. Unless in pie/cobbler form. It could be psychosomatic but I swear I feel sick to my stomach after eating an apple, orange, etc. Peaches, melons, and bananas are OK. Some pineapples. Otherwise it has to be in a dessert! You shouldn't tell people you don't like fruit though, they act like you are a horrible person. :)

chipotle...it's in everything now. Over-rated and honestly folks..it's not that "smoky"

Pork rinds. I understand the whole concept of "nose to tail" eating but I don't understand the concept of humans actually consuming those things. I used to give my dog pig ears to chew on and that is what those nasty things smell like. The gals I used to work with snacked on them constantly (not as part of the Atkins diet, either) and IMO, they are the noisiest, stinkiest and most annoying snack food ever invented.

Raspberries - so awful...

Okay, I am completey with the pie people. I can't stand it. I love cake and cookies, and I have nothing against fruit, but I just don't like pie.

And to clarify, my family, too, is from right along the Canadian border (with ND and MN), so that might explain the groos butter on breat thing. A nice pesto, or (my favorite) mustard is nice, but why butter?

Also, cool whip or any sort of whipped cream. It's a texture thing.

And canteloupe and papaya. honestly. Just not right. Long story, bad memories.. :(

...chipotle...it's in everything now.

It has taken the place held by the Sun Dried Tomato during the 80's and 90's.

Watermelon. Can't stand Watermelon. And Pickles. I won't even eat a sandwich that a pickle has touched. I hate the smell of pickles so much.

Wow. So many picky eaters! ;) I keed, I keed.

The only thing I can't tolerate is licorice or anything that tastes of licorice (anise, for example). But I don't really know any die-hard licorice fans, so maybe it's not that weird of a food to dislike after all...

@sheeats - Did you comment on the Fennel-Phobe thread? My husband felt very validated by the response of his fellow fennel haters, BTW.

I don't like sodas, have been practically afraid of Mc Donald's (etc....) and get goosebumps from the idea of eating frankfurter sausages or kebaps that cost less than 3 euros. You don't need neither scandals in tv (we had them all) nor a lot of imagination to figure out that a dish containig a generous amount of meat for such a price is not made happy cows' filets mignons. Gross.

I think my dislike of the green bell pepper has been well-documented on this site, lol.

I don't love raw tomatoes. Cooked tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, ketchup - all okay. I don't like the raw ones.

The idea of putting butter on sandwiches has never occurred to me, and I've never seen it done. I live in Wyoming too, and peope here eat some odd, crazy rural food...but not that.

My mother used to put butter on PBJ, too (she's from S. Dakota). Even at age 7, I knew it was wrong, wrong wrong!

I'm with the watermelon-haters. I can take one bite, but after that it makes me gag.

And my son is definitely in the camp of despising anything with cream, mayonnaise, or a sauce. Must be a texture thing. He recoils from hand lotion too.

tofu. whipped topping junk, asparagus, pimento cheese, crunchy peanut butter, green bell pepper, jalapenos but love chipotles, pork rinds, cottage cheese, raw blueberries and raspberries.

Fois gras and caviar. Yech. I don't care how expensive they are, fois gras is liver for God's sake! And caviar? Little fishy eyeballs that pop in your mouth.

Coffee - I can't stand the taste and I don't like the smell very much, either, but I got used to it in college.

Also - oranges (also can't stand the smell), pineapple, coconut, mango, cranberries, cherries. So finding a mixed drink I like is a problem! Oddly enough, I consider myself a fruit lover and can't wait until raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries are in season!

I'm generally a rabid spice lover, but ... dill. I can't stand dill. To me, it makes everything it touches smell and taste like swamp scum.

I can't believe I forgot the most obvious popular food I dislike - potatoes. I don't like them mashed, baked, scalloped, roasted, or even in fries or chips. And I've never met anyone else who shares this very strange food aversion!

Licorice is repulsive! You can also add anise to that. White Holsum bread, Cool Whip (NOT FOOD!), Fluff (whipped marshmellows?). Thai fish sauce (smell makes me want to die), tofu "noodles" - just the noodles - i love regular tofu, but the noodles smell like dead fish. Jarred Ragu sauce (so sweet)...

Soy patties....

Balsamic vinegar.
Maybe its just because its used in everything in commercial food production these days to make their products seem so chic and with the times.
Need a trendy new menu item? Add balsamic vinegar! It still happens...

It's probably because they use fake or vastly inferior balsamic, but I don't think I'd like anything that even comes close to approximating the flavor of balsamic.

I just don't like sweet and sour things to begin with, and whenever its used I find the cloying taste of balsamic vinegar just overwhelms everything else in the dish.

While there are a more foods (cloyingly sweet things) I just have no taste for, I guess balsamic vinegar is my only one true hate!

Polenta . . . I just can't stand it.

Tofu. In whatever incarnation.

Raw tomatoes. They are so terribly awful I retch thinking of them. I'm not a food philistine, I like all tomato products, but the very thought of a caprese salad strikes fear into my heart! Also the concept of eating offal. To summarise: offal=gross!

Are wilted greens (i.e. collard, spinach) popular? Unless they're served with another food they make me cringe.

refried beans - yuck
wilted greens as a side dish
babaganoush - i eat eggplants, but I can't stand any version I have tried so far...
jalapenos

i forgot to mention bananas and any and all organ-type meats.

I have the feeling i'm going to be lynched for saying this but, I absolutely HATE mashed potatoes. As a matter of fact the only way I can stand potatoes at all is pan roasted with garlic and onion. I'm going to hide now.

Cottage cheese, lima beans, whipped cream, coconut, banana or pineapple in foods( I will eat fresh pineapple or a banana...just not in anything). Actually, I prefer my fruit in it's pure state best.

I feel like some of the things listed on here are not actually "popular"- do the majority of people on this board like okra? beets? soy patties? peeps? Because I don't like any of those things either, but I don't think that other people think it's appalling if you don't like stuff like that... ditto organ meats/offal/pork rinds. At least where I live, I'm not a pariah for eschewing beets and sweetbreads in SF. :)

^I agree, so as for the 'popular' stuff I hate. I will also eliminate foods I liked as a kid, but don't eat now for ethical or health reasons. These are foods I just don't 'get.'

Roast meats. Turkey with all the trimmings. Honking big lumps of protien like pork or lamb roasts.

GRAVY.

Whipped creme, even the real stuff is vile--takes up space that could be filled with ice cream!

White sauces--alfredo, etc.

Baked pasta and ravioli.

I love chocolate, but gummi bears, gummi anything leaves me cold, as do pure sugary foods like Pixie Sticks, etc.

Chili.

I admit when I lived in England I thought the jacket potatos with stilton and Flora from Convent Garden were pretty yummy, though.

It's nice to hear someone else despises fois gras. The feel of all that fat in
my palette is repulsive. Licorice is another ""ugh" moment. Most things my kids love are horrid! Pop Tarts,ALL cold cereals, ALL hot cereals,"fruit"
everything:gushers, roll ups, snacks, and so on and so on.Soda just feels
strange when you swallow. Sorry, I'd rather waste 100 calories on a great
glass of burgundy.

Mayonnaise. I don't care what you think- I like Miracle Whip.

Eggs. Why is so hard to find something for breakfast that doesn't come with eggs.

@eatorama....you're not alone. My ex would eat MW, but never mayo - in anything. He had a crazy health reason that made no sense to me, but I always kept MW for him. I used to make a 7 layer salad that had MW and it just didn't taste as good with mayo, although I'm a Hellman fanatic.

after reading the above comments it's obvious that some of you need to contact dr. phil.

Honestly...I think the only "popular" food that I've found that I hate is tuna in a can....which I've said several times before. It's just not right.

It always amazes me how many people tell me they don't like fish except tuna salad and salmon.....helloooooooo?? These are two of the "fishiest" fishes. How can you not like a mild tilapia compared to oily salmon?

olddad, right on! ;)

I'm actually not that much of a fan of pizza, hot dogs, fried chicken, or even hamburgers. I might have a craving for any of those once every other month, if then, and since I'm a lactose-intolerant vegetarian, they're not hard to avoid.

Garlic.

chocolate.

i know. i'm not human.

Sushi, mayonnaise, meat/fish from a can, bananas, sour cream, yogurt, grits, shrimp, cooked fruit (excluding apples), hot dogs, ham

Lasagna. Just not a fan. Tiramisu. American "cheese". Corn dogs (now that's one I really don't get!)

Lima beans (love other kinds tho - that's odd), tofu (and I've tried it every which way), licorice.

I am Canadian and I butter sandwiches every time, even peanut butter. But my husband is American and he flinches every time he sees me to it - he also will not eat mayo on a sandwich unless it is a teeny bit in egg salad.

hard-boiled eggs
bananas
tuna-from-a-can

The eggs and bananas are a texture thing-- I like scrambled eggs and banana bread, but straight bananas are simultaneously stringy and mushy (my friend calls them "pre-chewed") and hard boiled eggs are simultaneously rubbery and chalky.

Tuna from a can just stinks. The smell alone makes me throw up a little in my mouth.

Glutinous sauces used at Asian retaurants. Blerg.

Also, I usually eat the cake from between the layers of frosting on a birthday cake. I guess I'm just a freak that way.

Can't stand coconut flakes or OJ with lots of pulp. It's a texture thing for me and my siblings. None of us three likes coconut, and my brother won't eat apples or pepper with the skin (cooked or raw) because of how it feels in his throat. I always thought HE was the weird one (who doesn't like to munch on an apple?) but in writing this post I realize that my thing about pulp in OJ is NO different. Light bulb moment here on this minor issue and making a connection with my older brother!

There are two exceptions for coconut though: coconut shrimp and Ina Garten's coconut cupcakes. They taste so good that I'm actually able to get past my usual coconut revulsion. I make mini versions of the cupcakes every year for my Christmas party and even eat one or two myself!

Oh wow. Thank you, billyjoe, for mentioning chipotle. I really thought I was the only one. But I disagree about the smokiness. To me, just the tiniest bit of chipotle permeates and overwhelms the entire dish, and just puts me off my feed. I just can't stand the flavor!

Mind you, I'm no wimp. I adore spicy food -- the hotter, the better, I say. I grew up on awesome, traditional Mexican food, made by people born and raised in Mexico. But in 40-some years of eating that stuff, I almost never encountered a chipotle pepper.

It's gotten so bad with them being in EVERYTHING, that I actually have to ask what kind of chiles are used when I see a dish described as spicy. I've been unpleasantly surprised one time too many.

There's really not much I won't eat. But I'm thinking there are other things that are really popular that seem way overrated, too. Just can't think of them. I do know I'd never miss ketchup if it disappeared from the shelves. I don't hate it, although it IS downright gross on some foods. Other things... well, I'll eat it if it's served to me, but I just don't get the appeal.

I hate slimy tuna salad made with run-of-the-mill greasy mayo. Now, don't get me wrong, I love tuna fish, just not smothered in mayo.

The fruit filling between the layers of cake or jelly filled donuts, they
make me shudder.
Bananas
Coconut - I will eat an Almond Joy though...

You put butter on sandwiches when you want to be fancy here in WI. All funeral sandwiches have to have butter then mustard & mayo are placed along side the platters so you can add whatever else you want.

I'm not fond of arugula. It's okay in recipes or mixed with other greens, but I'm not as nuts about it as some people who think it's the next best trendy thing. And I like it cooked better than raw. I think it has an off-putting smell when it's raw. But if someone served it to me, I'd eat it.

The two foods I won't eat are coconut and raisins. Things made with coconut milk are okay, but I hate the texture of coconut meat.

Raisins, I had a traumatic experience that stuck in my head, and I just mentally can't get past it. If the raisins are ground up, blended or obliterated, I'm fine. I just don't want to find whole raisins or pieces in my food. On the other hand, I like prunes just fine.

I HATE watermelon and I always feel like such a freak for this. Especially during the summer when a huge slice of watermelon constitutes as dessert. Also, oatmeal cookies are disgusting, even if they have chocolate chips in them. And lastly, rasins- anything with rasins will not be going in my mouth.

Stuffing that has been cooked inside a turkey or chicken. Yuck!

Pie. I've had only one good slice of pie in my entire life. Largely, it's a disappointing combination of downtrodden and soggy -- or, too-greasy and tasteless -- crust and gelatinous, droopy fruit.

1. The ubiquitous raw chocolate cupcake on many menus these days - mentioned upthread as well (as the "molten" chocolate cake).
2. Raspberries and/or raspberry anything. Tastes like Robitussin.
3. Chicken in just about any form, although I'm bending a bit on this, in the interest of not being such a pain in the neck when out to dinner at someone's house.

Raspberries

Wooden Spoon - I am with you on potatoes! I don't hate them, but I just don't care enough about them to eat them. You could leave an opened bag of chips on my desk all day, I won't touch them. I don't care at all about fries, mashed potatoes -- all the things that people oooo and ahhhh over. This is the one thing that makes my mother think we might not be related...

Popular things I dislike: Curry, paella, balsamic everything, pasta dishes that include onions.

I always want to like curries and paella, but I find their spices so overwhelming. It's hard for me to distinguish individual ingredients, and that makes me a little sad. It reminds me of something my dad used to say about those "smooth jazz" radio stations: listening to them is the aural equivalent of putting maple syrup on all of your food. Yeah, it's different, but it all tastes (sounds) the same.

Actually, I kind of feel the same way about balsamic. I like other types of vinegar, but balsamic is just so...inky.

And onions. They have a place in many dishes. Just not with my pasta.

Gosh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize that pork rinds were out of style. I'm a little behind the times.

I try to like sushi because my husband loves it, but the truth is it makes me want to yak. I close my eyes and chew quickly and swallow - ooh, yum, that is sooo good ....

The gals where I used to work absolutely loved this Chinese Restaurant around the corner from the office so they would go there 2-3 x a week! The Hot & Sour was awesome, but when I sat next to someone who was eating egg drop, I had to look away. That gloppy, over-cornstarched yellow snotty-looking swamp in a bowl just wasn't appetizing whatsoever.

I can't stand the taste of Rosemary.
I don't like chunky yogurts. In fact, I can only eat about 1/2 container of smooth yogurt at a time, something about the texture.
Chocolate & mint together-- it's like eating chocolate and brushing my teeth at the same time, gross.
Licorice- ew. just ew.
Coconut- i love the smell, can't stand the taste
"fishy" seafood- i love sushi, shrimp (except when fried), tuna, salmon, but if it tastes distinctly seafoody/fishy, i can't do it
hot dogs
jello
wheaties/shredded wheat/soggy cereals
american cheese (blech)

i'm so picky haha
spaghetti and angel hair pasta- the tiny noodle texture bugs me

Mayonnaise or any mayonnaise based foods. I hate cole slaw, I hate potato salad, egg salad....all that stuff. Yuck.

Hillary
Chew on That

We actually did a Monthly Mouthful on this same question...."What food does everyone else love that you can't stand?" We got some good answers!

Hillary

I detest:
- onions
- garlic
- cilantro/parsley
- sweet-sour anything
- brown rice
- basmatic rice
- celery in my salads (I don't mind celery sticks, but I hate that "Suprise!" chopped celery in any type of salad)
- un-thoroughly-cooked bell peppers

I don't care for
- pork/bacon
- chocolate
- pizza
- pilaf (sacrilege!)

vinegar. shudder.
