New York Bakeries

I'm headed off to NYC in a few weeks and am hoping to find a few bakeries to stop at. Do you have any favorites in the city? Do you know of any (ahem) healthy bakeries? Ones that specifically focus on making lower fat or lower sugar treats?

I'm really pretty clueless and I'd love any suggestions!!

6 Comments:

silver moon at 105 and broadway for fruit and nut granola, ethiopian bread, chocolate chip cookies (more like cakes), and chocolate almond croissants (modest in size).

bouchon in time warner for crazy sticky buns and the bouchons.

city bakery for chocolate chip cookies. that is all i've ever had here because they are so divine.

healthy bakeries? babycakes on broome st. wheat, gluten, dairy, casein, egg, and refined sugar free, and delectable, believe it or not. i love their chocolate cupcake--the vanilla tastes mealy and vegan-y, but the chocolate is decadent!

Thank you tudogostoso, I will definitely look into these!

amy's at chelsea market and other locations for bread, corner bakery at 93rd and 3rd for wonderful cupcakes, scones, cherry cobbler, and layer cake, crumbs on 8th st. for amazing cupcakes.

I definitely second Amy's (try the bread with semolina and golden raisins -- with a little bit of butter it's as good as any dessert!), and I also like Sugar Sweet Sunshine on the Lower East Side. Definitely not healthy but worth it! Also, if you venture into Brooklyn (which you should!), there's One Girl Cookies in Boerum Hill, about 10 paces from the F train stop on Bergen St. Their pumpkin whoopie pies are like crack!

If we're talking cookies, then find your way to Levain Bakery on the UWS. They'll not only put the rest to shame, but each is a meal on to itself! Otherwise, I must second Bouchon Bakery in the Time Warner Center.

What about Sullivant St. Bakery at the Gran Daisy location? On Sullivan St., aptly enough.
