My Lucky Day!
This morning at a small yard sale in my neighborhood I ran across, and bought, an ancient, beautifully seasoned WagnerWare #8 cast iron skillet, along with a cast iron chicken fryer, and a 5qt. cast iron Dutch oven! All for $20!

$20.00! You are the most fortunate person imaginable. I've got a great skillet but have always wanted a chicken fryer. I've been slinking around looking for a dutch oven ever since the no knead bread craze started. It is reports like this that feed the addiction to yard sales. Is there a 12-step program for second-hand junkies?

@huney_bumper, Would you like my mailing address? You must spend all day gathering wood for the bonfire needed for all that hardware! ;~)
Okay @protest, let's not start a posting war over an exchanged smiles between cast iron lovers. This is not a hateful response to huney's extravgance...

Wow, I thought those kinds of items were handed down.
You are profoundly blessed.
BTW, when should we come over for the fried chicken?

You must be one of the luckiest people... Yard sales here in the Land of Stucco never offer great stuff like that, because nobody seems to have any of those classics. Plenty of out of favor gadgets-of-the-moment tho!
My FIL is a professional yard-saler. He goes to yard/garage/estate sales nearly every single weekend and almost never comes home empty handed. He's got an attic full to the rafters with treasures like this, which he cleans up or fixes, and then sells at his own sale.
Next time I'm in TN my goal is to get him to part with some of those things for a good price. Guess we'd better drive or my luggage will be over the airlines' weight limits... ;-)
Congratulations on your fantastic find!

this is a great find for u, i have several that was my grandfathers and they work really well. no sticking. cornbread just pops right out for one. i live here in west virginia and go to yard sales often and if u happen upon (i hate to say this) a recentley deceased older family member, their young relatives get rid of this stuff. they just don't know what a prize they have. often times i try to tell them to hang on to a piece or two but they would rather have the new stuff. whats the old saying, "youth is wasted on the young". bye to u and keep searching and perserving our past in this small way.

Congratulations on a wonderful buy! I will bring the drinks for the picnic of fried chicken, cornbread and baked beans you will be making. :-)

@czken the thought never entered my mind. actually my hardware is all different sizes and what I take depends on the number of people I'm planning to feed and the menu, besides I cook everyone else has to chop wood ;) lol

Gee, I need to go to more garage sales! The ones I've gone to haven't been that good, but I'll admit that I've had much better luck at estate sales and moving sales.
I've had particular good luck finding interesting cookbooks at estate sales. First, I look for titles or authors that I'm interested in, then I check out the ones that look worn, because I figure that if the previous owner used the book a lot, it must have good recipes. I always figure it's a bonus if there are handwritten notes in the book and/or newspaper clippings with recipes.
I've also had some pretty good luck at some of the thrift stores. You can imagine that some people got these cooking gadgets as gifts, never used them, and donated them to the thrift store for the write-off. I've also found some good buys on cast iron -- as cheap as $1 for a frying pan.
It's interesting to see the appliances that are being sold for next to nothing. There are usually an array of bread machines going for $5 to $15.
Nearby there are some flea markets, too, and there are sometimes good deals, but usually they treat the cast iron pans like they are all antiques, so you'll find a used Lodge frying pan for $50 that you could buy new for $15. But sometimes there are bargains. Since the flea markets are booths belonging to different vendors, the pricing can be all over the place. But it's fun to look around, anyway.
