Manhattan Dining For A Large Group Of Teens
Does anyone have any suggestions for decent and reasonable food for a gaggle of Atlanta high school kids coming to NYC to see plays and take an acting class? Including chaperones the number is 26. They are staying at the Edison; one of the plays is at the Roundabout, the others in the theater district. Please don't mention Tad's.

Try Carmine's! It's on 44th, very near Times Square/theatre district.
It's a big, family-style Italian joint with good food, and it's ideal for large groups (boisterous). It will be cheaper per person than anything comparable in the neighborhood, and a lot better in both taste and experience than Applebee's, etc.
Cost can be kept under control with sane ordering. Again, it's family-style, so order slightly less than the waiter recommends (since they will probably try to upsell you, especially since with teenagers, wine is unlikely to be a substantial part of the bill).
One platter of pasta costs $20-25 and is probably enough for 4-5 entree portions, depending on appetites (I'm assuming teens=stomachs), but if you plan to mix and match, it's enough for 6-8 to sample, with other kinds of pasta coming to the table.
The salads are good, and huge: mind that the caesar-which is great--has anchovies, which might not go over well with teens (obv'ly can request no anchovies).
My particular rec is the rigatoni with sausage and broccoli.
Here's the website:

Enjoy.

Carmine's was going to be my rec as well.
Another possibility is John's Pizzeria, which is on 44th between 8th Ave and Broadway. www.johnspizzerianyc.com/index2.htm

I agree with the Carmine's rec. Have fun!

Oh yeah John's Pizzeria is a good idea. Carmine's is really chaotic but that's probably OK for teenagers.

I'd also go with Virgil's. They're owned by the Carmine's people. It's barbeque, and for Manhattan, not bad. Way better than BBQ and a lot of other places. It's big, noisy, good sized portions. Would I want to go there for an intimate dinner? No. But for a group of teenagers, it might be a good choice.

Was going to rec Virgil's as well, but I figured a bunch of kids who are coming to and staying in NYC might find Italian food more of an NYC thing...
I didn't know Virgil's had the same owners as Carmine's. Interesting!

John's is my recommendation, too. Fun, tasty, and not too expensive. Oh, and spacious.

Thanks for the suggestions. Carmine's and John's are on the itinerary, as are the Stage Deli and Ellen's Stardust Diner. I'm sure they'll have a ball.

John's is a good bet. Not the best coal-oven pizza in town, but very solid nonetheless. It's in a big space, too (an old church), so they will be able to fit a party of 26 easily. Virgil's would also work, though it will be more expensive. If they would be willing to try spicy Szechuan food Szechuan Gourmet is great, and it's on West 39th Street, so it's well located.

I agree on all those things, but I really just wanted to point out that all three of Roundabout's theatres are in the theatre district. =)
