Last Bite?

When I'm eating meals, I find that about halfway through I decide what will be the last thing I eat. What morsel will be the final thing to pass my lips - the item on the plate that will be responsible for leaving the lasting impression.

e.g. During today's leftover homemade chix pot pie with leftover kale, I ate all around the crust of the pot pie until the crust was the only thing left in the plate. I savored it at the end of my lunch.

Do you do this? If so, what are some "save the best for last" items you find yourself reserving until the very last bite?

the crust potion of anything, the top layer of baked cheese (as in a lasagna), corner pieces...

Yay! Another crust lover!

Yes, I totally save a perfect last bite. Usually I save a little of everything on the plate to make a perfectly balanced bite with a little of everything. My SO used to eat things off my plate and ruin the whole process but he has learned over time that it's not a good idea to mess with my complex rationing schema.

I LOVE crusts. I started making my lasagnas in individual pans so that everyone gets a corner piece :)

That is SOOOO funny that other people do this! I love getting that "Best Bite" with a good meal.

It is always a special treat when it is truly THE last bite so you will remember that great taste and flavoring........

It shouldn't ever be one of the first bites because then you have nothing to look forward to......

It is that certain bite where all of the seasonings all come together in just the right combo.

@bitchincamero.....I feel the same about brownie corners, and someone told me about this pan and mentioned that lasagna corner lovers rave about it too. I bought it that day and love it! Everybody gets a corner piece!

I had a box of VDay chocolates and saved my favorite for last - a little toffee bar. It was awful! What a disappointment.

When I saw your title, I thought you meant Last Bite on earth and thought - wow, wonder if I'll still have teeth?

...and someone told me about this pan ... Everybody gets a corner piece!

I love the crusty, chewy edges of brownies but there are some who feel they are an undesirable trait! Martha Stewart slices off the brownie ends from each pan of brownies; dices them - puts them in a freezer bag and scatters them over ice cream. If, however, I am served a center cut brownie ... That's OK too!

I just finished my smoked turkey with dijon mustard, lettuce and baby swiss sandwich before I read this post. I cut the sandwich in half and ate all of the crust part first saving the middle part for last.

But, even thought I prefer the middle of a sandwich, I too am a confirmed crust lover -- I have battled for the best crusty bits in many a casserole, brownie and baked dish. I even have fought for the corner pieces of a pizza. (In my neck of the woods pizzas are cut into squares leaving three triangle shaped "corners". I don't know why we call them "corners" we just do.) I even bake some dishes (mac and cheese and meat loaf) in muffin tins to ensure crusty bits can be had by all. I hate to say it, but rachel ray is the the one who taught me the "stuffin muffin" trick.

Ah, yes. It's called the Perfect Last Bite in our house. It started with Julia's Tournedos Sautes Chasseur (page 297 of Mastering), bread sauteed in butter, topped with filet mignon, then a mushroom-Marsala sauce. The bread always seems to go first, so you have to save a bite of bread and make sure there's a mushroom or two left for the Perfect Last Bite with the meat. My son has extended the PLB to anything he really loves, like making sure there's cheese and not too much sauce on the last bite of pizza.

Haha yes I do this too! Although I usually save the middle - not the crust - for last.

@Perky - I think I have to get this pan. You're the 5th or 6th person who's recommended it!

Yes crust on anything!!!!!

I leave all the crunchy potatoes for last whether it's french fries or roasted potatoes.

I like a little one-fork combo of all the foods on the plate. Ultimate example is the very middle bit of a chicken kiev, mashed potato and peas, all on the one fork. The ultimate final forkful!

Whatever tastes the best - I want that flavor to linger. It could be a little of everything, or the last bite of buttery sweet potato, or a "mop" with great bread of the last of the juices.

Yep, I do this too. I guess that's where my peculiar ways of eating certain foods come from - for instance, if I eat a piece of chocolate with large pieces of nuts, I will leave the "nut piece" for the last bite (I don't even think about it, it just happens), or if I eat a Jaffa cake, I first eat all the way round the cake (just the sponge covered with chocolate) and the glorious centre (sponge, orange jelly, chocolate) has to be savoured as "the last bite" (don't get me wrong, the whole thing doesn't take but a minute, but still:-))!

oh yes! mop up the sauce with your last bite of bread!

Hee! I do that with Cornish pasties and meat pies -- always save the crusts for last, with a bunch of HP brown sauce for mopping purposes. :-)

Strange, though, because I hate crusts on sandwiches and will totally eat around and then discard them...

When ever we grill ribeyes outside I also grill crusty bread while the steaks are resting. My favorite last bite is to swipe that last piece of grilled bread through the remaining steak juices and pinch that last morsel of garlic infused mushroom. Oh crap,it's a long time until dinner.

I save the best tasting one-thing on my plate for last unless it's Japanese, Vietnamese, or Thai food. With those dishes, I usually save a spoonful or chopstick full of the variety of ingredients that were made well - the same dish on a different day would be made differently, which would change the combination.

When I feel that I am almost done with my meal, which is either 1) when I'm sated; or 2) when there's no more rice in my rice bowl, I still have my "last bite" even if I've only eaten half my platter (80% of the time). The leftovers either get tossed or boxed up, depending on whether the experience is worth reliving.

I save whatever bite looks perfect for last- a perfectly browned piece of chicken, the cheesiest bite of pizza, etc. The worst thing is when you save that last perfect bite, and something has gone wrong, for example that lovely blob of cheese is concealing a section of burnt crust. If this happens to me, I have to have something else so that my last bite will be perfect.

always crust. have an apple pie? I eat all the apple filling first, then the center pastry and finally crust (I save some icrecream for those last bites as well). if the dish has cheese, then always some cheesy bite for last.

Hmmm I definitely don't do this consciously. I've always been told to not save the best for last because that way if you get full, you won't enjoy it!

Chew on That

A hot T-bone steak, slightly charred on the outside - the part that is nestled in the "T" part of the cut next to the bone, with a bit of charred fat on the edge - that is all the steak I need!!
