There is (that is, I hope there still is) a restaurant called 'Paprika' at 110 St Mark's Place, between first Avenue and Avenue A. I recall the food being very good, and the prices were reasonable.

I recall it feeling pleasantly 'adult' too, that is to say, it was not filled with idiots trying to be cool at the top of their lungs. Refreshing. The food is Italian, not specifically regional, but reflecting the centre and north, more than the south.

Paprika is totally not on the Lower East Side - it is firmly planted in the heart of the East Village.

Sounds like you’re asking for Kuma Inn – it’s in the LES, it’s BYOB, and they serve great small plates (that aren't all that small) of inventive Asian fare (not just sushi, don’t worry). Keep in mind that they add 18% gratuity for groups of 6 or more.

Beyond that, check the boards over on Chowhoud – there have been recent threads on BYO as well as group dining in the LES.

Bun isn't really LES but not too far either.

'inoteca (Rivington @ Ludlow) may be exactly the kind of place you have in mind. It might be more expensive than you're hoping to find. However, it's all small plates, so the total ticket is largely within your control (or way out of control, as the case may be!). Although they don't think do reservations in general, they DO accept them for parties of six or more, so you'd be able to avoid the famous long waits.

Also, haven't been there myself, but Oliva gets pretty good reviews for authentic Spanish tapas, and the prices seem to be slightly lower than at inoteca , etc. (E Houston @ Allen).

Whatcha celebratin?

The 'East Village' is 'totally' an estate agent's invention, and when my grandparents were growing up there, it was considered part of the Lower East Side. On some (current) maps it's still identified as such.

I don't know whether Paprika's being a few blocks north of Delancey Street is going to make a difference; the restaurant is a good one, and reasonably priced, but if something way south is an important qualification, pass on this.

I mostly know Italian restaurants, because I tend to go after what I grew up with. 'Inoteca at 98 Rivington (http://www.inotecanyc.com/index.html) is one I forgot, since I haven't been there in over a year, but it there are a lot of small, reasonably priced items on the menu. They're definitely not BYOB, since they're all about wine, but they don't charge extra for groups of six or more, and they're a lot of fun, very relaxed. I could easily walk out of there having eaten well for under $10 (before tip).

How about Schiller's Liquor Bar, or Alias?

i'll second alias. sunday nights are $25 prix fix 3 course suppers which are wildly popular.

stanton social is a little pricy but a lot of fun for a group.

thanks for all the ideas..celebrating an upcoming wedding..bachelorette party..but a quiet one!! I will pass on these suggesttions to my daughter, the bridesmaid. Thank you all!!

Damn, I need to move to NYC. Oh well, At least it doesn't snow here
