I want flours, not flowers
Remember the scene in Stranger Than Fiction when Will Ferrell's character brought Maggie Gyllenhaal that box filled with different types of flour? I want that! I can never ever find cake flour -- how about you all? And I live in NYC! Can anyone recommend a place to find different types of flour, or do I need to order online?

Are you kidding? I'm surprised you can't find Soft as Silk or something like that - it's sold in boxes, not bags.
At worst, go here and get some of this stuff.
I'm sure you can find it somewhere! You can find anything in New York City! Have you tried Food Emporium?? D'Agostino??

jbeach, I hear you! I lived in NYC for 5 years and had THE HARDEST time finding cake flour! Not even Soft As Silk! WTF?!?! I had to buy large quantities of it when I went to my parents' house on Long Island, their supermarket always had it. I searched high and low - Fairway (no), numerous Gristedes, and even overpriced D'agostino. No one had it!
Also, chiff, while I'm sure that SOME store has it, it is seriously a pain in the ass to trek all over the city for some freakin' cake flour! (I've done it!) There was only one supermarket near my apt in the East Village, and a few near my workplace; none had it. In Brooklyn, the 3 supermarkets near me didn't have it, either. WTF?!?!?

I love flours too. I love them from King Arthur http://www.kingarthurflour.com/shop/landing.jsp?go=Home
Also Anson Mills http://www.ansonmills.com/
Real remote site http://www.specialfoods.com/flours.html
they have flour of anything.
I love local mills when I am traveling I run in and buy flour or any kind of grain they have and bring them home and go wild.

I second King Arthur. Just buy online; you'll never go back to other flours after them. :) :) :)

I'd be shocked if they didn't carry cake flour at Whole Foods.

@ CCCupcake...I hear you. While walking everywhere might be healthy, I'd hate to have to clock several miles in search of any ingredient! This becomes especially problematic if you don't have the extra time. Mail order is a Godsend in those cases. You can find nearly anything via mail order and they ship pretty quick.
King Arthur Flour's website has a bounty of baking products. I'd definitely get it from them.

You ALL need to move to Brooklyn! We have cake flour not only at our Key Food, but also at my little local deli. And Perelandra, the health food store in Brooklyn Heights, even sells a bunch of different types of flour (whole wheat pastry!) in bulk. Come on out!
jbeach - I absolutely LOVED that scene in the movie - it was so sweet!!

OMG, Key Food. I haven't heard Key Food mentioned in a zillion years! I also liked C-Town on 18th Avenue. You could always find any Italian product. You could ask for frozen artichoke hearts and not be looked at like you had seven heads.

You can get Soft as Silk and Arrowhead Mills whole wheat pastry flour at Fresh Direct. Clearly not King Arthur, but if you want somewhere totally convenient, they're it.

I guess looking for a specific brand may be difficult, but cake flour is available at our Super K-Mart. :O
