I top my cereal with _____
Cold cereal wise, I like fresh blueberries or peaches (when more in season) on Kashi Cinnamon Promise along with whole milk. Dried fruit, like raisins or chopped dates, sprinkled on top of hot oatmeal. What do you put on a bowl of your favorite cereal...fruit, do you add some type of sweetener like brown sugar or honey, stir something unusual into a hot cereal and then do you pour on milk or maybe half & half?

I am on a rice krispies with strawberries kick. Great combination.

Dry cereals call out (you have to be very quiet and LISTEN) for fresh fruit and cold milk. Today I have blueberries and bananas and I'm so happy!
Hot oatmeal needs just a touch of brown sugar melting on top and ice cold milk. You must eat it quickly because you just can't let the milk warm up or the oatmeal cool. Understand?
PerkyMac at 9:16AM on 02/11/08
I'm pretty much a purist when it comes to cold cereal. Cheerios, bananas (must be organic though - they're so much better) and skim milk.
Hot oatmeal requires raisins, dark brown sugar and maybe a sprinkle of good cinnamon. Sometimes change it up with dried apples or other dried fruits, but dates? Haven't ever tried that - ooo, I've got to! Love dates.
I make my own granola, so it's no holds barred on what goes in there.
It never ceases to amaze me when people can eat breakfast at 5:33 AM JEP.
frederika at 9:32AM on 02/11/08
When I'm going through a cold cereal phase (which is not too often) I like either Cheerios with banana and soy milk, or Total with raisins (like Raisin Bran, but without the added sugar that is crusted onto the raisins) and soy milk (although I'll eat the Total with regular skim milk...the Cheerios just need a little extra flavor).
ChristineB at 9:47AM on 02/11/08
Banana slices, blueberries, and strawberries (when the berries are in season) on top of a mix of All-Bran and Kashi Go Lean. Plus a few shakes of cinnamon (I put cinnamon on top of everything!). Just a splash of milk though.
On Oatmeal, I'll do cinnamon and blueberries, and usually just a spoonful of brown sugar or Splenda.
Can I expand the question to yogurt? What do you put on top of yogurt?
I like to mix in the same cereal and fruits as listed above. I also like to use a sweeter cereal, like cinnamon toast crunch, in plain or vanilla yogurt for a snack or dessert treat.
luswim06 at 9:55AM on 02/11/08
I add brown sugar, cinnamon and maple syrup to oatmeal.
mommyme at 10:05AM on 02/11/08
@luswim06 - on the yogurt thing, that is the only reason I make granola. I don't know if I could eat them separately or singley. I would never think to just eat granola in a bowl w/milk. I know other people must because it seems they sell a lot of it. My kid eats granola with yogurt on top, I eat yogurt with granola on top, funny, huh?
frederika at 10:23AM on 02/11/08
I like rasins, berries and bananas on hot and cold cereals. I use sugar free syrup on my oatmeal and its delicious. Oh, peached in season are great in both too.
Regarding the yogurt; I love to put Kashi Go Lean Crunchies on mine or mix them together in a bowl and add fresh berries.
tammiebalon at 10:59AM on 02/11/08
I like oatmeal made with a dousing of vanilla soymilk for extra heart health and dried cranberries or goji berries.
synaesthesia.dc at 11:33AM on 02/11/08
Just milk - sometimes a sliced banana, once in a blue moon.
karlanee at 11:39AM on 02/11/08
I like to put on top...more cereal! I picked up the strange habit from my dad, mixing different kinds of cereal together. Usually something basic (like cheerios or cornflakes) with something a little sweeter (granola, especially the orange and cranberry bulk kind from Fairway). Yum!
Any fruit will do -- bananas, blueberries, raspberries, raisins, dried cranberries.
Hot cereal (plain) is perfect with apples and dark brown sugar. Mmm.
Also, I couldn't tell you what's in it, but this is my new cereal comfort food.
savecara at 11:49AM on 02/11/08
My all-time favorite cereal breakfast (learned from my husband, an evil genius in the kitchen):
1. Pour bowl of Grape Nuts
2. Top with tablespoon of real, good maple syrup (preferably grade B) or honey
3. Top with small pat of butter (stay with me here)
4. Pour low-fat milk or soy milk on top, until it starts to peek up around the sides of the Grape Nuts
5. Microwave (stay with me!) until hot, 30-60 seconds
6. Top with sliced banana and stir
7. DO NOT BOTHER ME, I'm EATING!
If you've never had this, try it tomorrow morning -- it takes cereal to a whole new level!
CookiePie at 12:19PM on 02/11/08
I prefer my cold cereal plain, but almost anything is good on oatmeal: nuts, dried coconut, vanilla, honey, agave nectar, brown sugar, maple syrup, dried cherries...not all at once of course.
lovesomething at 12:34PM on 02/11/08
Just milk... need to try adding fresh berries though, seems like it might be good:-)
brooke29 at 12:48PM on 02/11/08
Nothing. :(
Although people who know me wouldn't be surprised. I'm one of those weird people who steams seafood and eats it as is, without salt, pepper, herbs, butter, etc. When I do eat cereal, albeit rarely, it's for dinner and it's usually Life. It has enough flavor and is quite sweet.
Savecara, I have mixed and matched cereal as a kid as well. It's cool to know that I'm not the only one! We always had muesli and Life, and then a random 3rd cereal.
Another thing I used to do as a kid was to throw cereal in a glass with milk and watch Saturday morning cartoons. A few times a year, I'd add a bit of powdered strawberry Quik (yes, I'm that old - this was in the 1970s) for a sweet fix. This was the only sweet thing we had in the house other than turbinado for coffee, since my parents didn't care for sweets...and probably why I don't care for them either.
Cassaendra at 1:07PM on 02/11/08
Wow Cassaendra - you are OLD! I was having babies in the 70's, so that makes me ANCIENT!
Have you tried flavoring your foods and didn't like it? I just can't imagine not enjoying trying different herbs, spices, fruits and veggies, etc. to add new dimensions. I grew up trying new things, and I think childhood has a lot to do with likes and dislikes, but we also grow and expand (in more ways than one unfortunately...ha) as we get older.
PerkyMac at 1:20PM on 02/11/08
Almonds, berries and flax seeds on dry cereal with soy milk (vanilla is tasty). Berries, nuts, buttermilk and fancy vanilla sugar (when I have it) on steel cut oats.
bitchincamero at 1:37PM on 02/11/08
I must eat cereal dry... I fill a mug with cereal and have juice or milk or a fruit smoothie or milkshake on a separate glass and eat it all separately. Can't stand soggy wet cereal.
I like some of the more natural cereals - Kashi has a version very similar to Cheerios which is wonderful... sorry, I can't rememebr the name. but my alltime favorites are Special K, Honey Bunches of Oats, Honey Nut Cheerios, Total, Life, and Honey Crisp Corn Flakes...
MadelynRodriguez at 2:19PM on 02/11/08
i love putting freeze dried mango, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries on top of my homemade granola {oats, maple syrup, coconut, almonds, pecans, sunflower seeds, cinnamon, thank you, mark bittman!}. they're crunchy and tart. i go back and forth between using almond milk and goat's milk.
cybercita at 2:29PM on 02/11/08
I don't put stuff into cold cereal except milk lots of cold whole milk and then you have to eat it as quickly as you can because as soon as it starts to get soggy I no longer want it.
Oatmeal however I usually cook dried cherries, cranberries or raisins in with steel cut oatmeal but on top only brown sugar and whole milk or half and half and perkymac was right no cold oatmeal or warm milk it is just wrong. Do you hear me WRONG!!
jennywren at 2:50PM on 02/11/08
@PerkyMac LOL sorry! No, you're not ancient. :D
I'm quite picky about the preparation of my seafood -- steaks too, but I don't steam them! I've tried them with sauce, butter, and other herbs through the years, but I think it comes down to me just absolutely loving the way they taste alone that the other flavors end up distracting me (for a lack of a better explanation) from the flavor that I thoroughly enjoy. Weird, huh?
Cassaendra at 3:58PM on 02/11/08
Anyone can add fruit to oatmeal but you gotta think outside the box. I take a bowl of hot oatmeal, stir in 1 heaping tsp "Adams" crunchy peanut butter, 2 tsp homemade jam (any kind) then just enough milk to make it like thick soup. Yummy, yummy. ( also add peanut butter to all homemade soups and stews)
jparks at 4:12PM on 02/11/08
I have oatmeal 6 if not 7 days a week. I usually add frozen fruit except in the summer. My favorite combos are peaches with blueberries, cherries, or raspberries. Add walnuts and maple syrup and I'm in comfort food heaven. I also like apples with dried fruits like raisins or cranberries plus the walnuts and maple syrup and a dash or two of cinnamon. It's like apple crisp for breakfast!
Otabenga at 5:44PM on 02/11/08
@cookiepie, that sounds great. Next time I get Grape-Nuts, I'm going to try it.
Cold cereal, bananas, berries
Hot cereal, maple syrup, toasted walnuts or pecans
Yum.
chisai at 5:48PM on 02/11/08
MMmmm...some interesting cereal combinations & will try a few of them!
CookiePie--now your cereal recipe does sound very good!
Curious--I have another question for everyone...do you have a favorite cereal bowl which you MUST eat from that is just the right size/shape & for some reason always makes your cereal taste a little bit better?
JEP at 6:02PM on 02/11/08
i don't like anything on my cereal. minimal milk. real soggy :)
stumbler02 at 6:19PM on 02/11/08
I generally do lots of stuff to my oatmeal - fruit, something crunchy, a tiny bit of sweetener like brown sugar. Cereal - usually just milk.
chiff0nade at 8:54AM on 02/12/08
cinnamon. lots of cinnamon mixed in as well as the occasional dried cherries or strawberries
zekks at 2:28PM on 02/12/08
My favorite breakfast..going on 4 years now...is cottage cheese mixed with maple syrup or honey, topped with grapenuts cereal and blueberries ( ok, I know you asked what we top our cereal with, but I flipped it and told you what I top with cereal!)YUM!
