Cheap Eats, Upper West Side
My girlfriend and I are heading down to New York for our upcoming March break (which happens to start in February). We'll be hanging around the Upper Westside for most of it, checking out museums and what not. While we have most of our nights planned out already, our afternoons are fairly open.
Any suggestions for some quality, student-priced lunches around there? Preferably something beyond typical diner food.

Picnic market on b'way and 101st has great French bistro food for lunch, at the same prices as the diner one block down. The food is much better quality, and much more interesting, than anything else you'll find for the same price.

Not a terribly exciting rec, but Ollie's is reliable for an inexpensive and pretty decent lunch, if you're up for Chinese food. It's surely not Chinatown, but it's good. Try the roast pork bun to start (or take a couple to go for truly cheap eats, they're cheap and large and yummy).
There are a couple on Broadway: a huge one at 68th street (you can eat in the restaurant, or order at the take-out counter and eat in the covered public space, to save a little more money: it's indoors, but not technically in the restaurant), and a smaller one at 84th. There;s also one right across from Columbia at 116th if you're in that neighborhood.
Fairway has an upstairs cafe that is also highly recommended, at 75th and B'way.
No doubt there are more/new/interesting options since I lived there, but those are solid for a student budget.
If you make it up to the 100s, check out Amsterdam Avenue for interesting, tasty options (Ethiopian, Mexican). Far better deal and better food than what you find on Broadway.

Pinch (Pizza by the Inch) and S'MAC (Sarita's Macaroni and Cheese) have just opened a joint venture on Columbus between 82nd and 83rd
If you like Thai food, check out Lime Leaf, on Broadway at 107th
On Broadway at 98th is Cafe Viva - all-natural, vegetarian and vegan-friendly pizza. Not much atmosphere for sitting, but cheap and quite delicious
The Columbia area is great for student-friendly prices, as you might imagine. Not for lunch, but coffee & dessert: try the Hungarian Pastry Shop on Amsterdam at 111th. And right across the street is the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, with its sculpture garden ready for exploration.
Enjoy your stay!

Barney Greengrass -- one of the best delis in the city, IMHO; great for breakfast; not cheap, but not outrageously expensive either
Bar Boloud -- relatively cheap way to experience Daniel's awesome talent
Gray's Papaya -- duh; NYC institution; gotta eat hot dogs, right?
Hummus Place around 75th(?) -- name says it all
Saigon Grill -- cheap, fast, super fresh, Vietnamese
Land -- excellent affordable Thai place up in the 80s
Pio Pio -- Peruvian
Hampton Chutney -- good Indian, affordable
Zabar's -- deli style, bargain for what you get
Lenny's -- not as good as the others, but still good; deli lunch or breakfast
Have fun!
