Amsterdam, NL dining
Please help - going to Amsterdam for a week and looking to try out some good places to eat and experience some good dutch cooking. Any thoughts/suggestions?
Suggestions on things to do other than the normal Amsterdam stuff of museums, "etc" are also welcome.

You have to go on the Pancake Boat!

More recommendations on this previous thread. Maybe Hillary/Chew on That will report back on her experience?

This place is fun. The food is good but its the building and location that make it an experience.

I was blown away by how much fun I had exploring Amsterdam a couple of years ago. I was there in June and was amazed at the boat, canal and water culture there. Everyone there seems to enjoy getting around by boat as much as by bicycle. I'd never seen so many boats at some of the docks in the towns we visited. Not sure what you'll find at this time of year. Will you get to see the national skating race where competitors skate from town to town on the frozen canals?
In the Leidesplain (?) area there is a section with international dining, mainly for tourists. We went to a Dutch restaurant that served Hutspot (or Hotchpotch), which I believe is a mashed potato concoction that has meat with cabbage, kale or some other greens mixed in. I was told that it's not a summer food, but you'd be right in time. My most favorite meal there was canalside, al fresco one evening. The restaurant seating was full, but people would pull up in their boats, dock them, and then get served drinks and dinner right on their boats! It was an absolutely magical evening, and was instantly relaxing and so different from anything I'd ever seen in my travels.

First of all, I second Raphael and recommend you make your way to the Pancake Boat. Unfortunately I didn't wind up taking the Pannenkoekenboot myself but this is one of my biggest regrets! It's a little harder to get too because it's on the other side of the canal, but if you're going on a boat cruise anyway (which I recommend!) you should just take the Pancake Boat and combine the pancakes you'll need to eat and the cruise you'll need to take in one shot.
Next, I'd recommend a restaurant called Maxie's Cafe in Negen Staatjes (the Nine Streets/really nice shopping area next to Leidseplein and the Rijskmuseum).
Alaina - thanks for recommending me.
Otabenga - was the restaurant you went to called the De Blauwe Hollander? We went there too and my friend tried the Hotchpotch.
I recommend trying the soups, they're big there! The pea soup is especially a favorite.
I read a lot about brown houses too to go too, and I believe the Pancake Corner I went to (in Leidseplein) was one but if you can find another brown house, try it out! The best part about Amsterdam is it's easy to discover it on your own and pick for yourself what looks good.
They have all sorts of areas for everyone - from the laidback to the partiers, to those that enjoy architectural beauty. I loved my trip!
Also, just so you know - they're getting rid of the Red Light District. I'm not too sad.

favorite food in Amsterdam was a goat cheese and honey sandwich made on dense whole wheat bread and topped with either pinenuts or walnuts. we had it several times, always at sidewalk cafes next to a canal.
we were there in May 2007 and the Rijskmuseum was under extensive construction, would suggest you skip it unless you just have to see the Night Watch, otherwise not much else there but do see the Van Gogh and rent the audio tour.
