A limit on the SL nightmare series. Pity.

I am not sure everyone had the chance to properly vent on the topic. I am going to TiVo every Saturday from now on. Just for the sheer hellish hysteria that follows! The hubs hates it when I throw the microwaved Smuckers at the screen.

On the contrary -- the archives are full of the same old stuff ... not a new topic. And what does it contribute, really, to the discussion of "Serious Eats" to say unkind things about people?

When the editors choose to end a topic, then we should respect that decision and end it.

indeed. if you need to bash, apparently television without pity is the place to be.

Point taken. I only recently started reading these discussions and I had no idea so many people felt the way I do. Had a bad day today and was laughing out loud, so, what can I say..............

I love discussing Shamdra as much as the next person but if you want a real slugfest, visit TWOP. There is a Shamdra forum where like-minded individuals go to fling pudding cups and Pillsbury tube dough in her name. There is also a forum called Cassandra Crossing where the Shamdra forum is a hoot. (Or a "whoot" as it were...)

I think trying to keep this forum sane and calm is not such a bad idea. When things get out of hand, it's time for the keepers of the playground to call the play back to order. :)

Back to order we go! Besides it is extremely rare that I have a day like today. I am putting myself in time-out for a minute two.

I have to say, I started the Sandra Lee post and I've been checking every now and then to see if people responded. I didn't click on the topic and from a quick scroll through it looked like no one had responded to my post! I told my boyfriend and he said, "It looks like you've been blacklisted. You've offended somone." THANK GOD that wasn't true, I was going to seriously question this website if I'd offended anyone over my Sandra Lee comments. I too was laughing hysterically and some of the comments posted. All of you are so funny, but the subject matter was kind of easy. Anyhow, all I have to say is I looked up the Kwanzaa cake and I couldn't believe it was true. Corn nuts and canned apple filling? My god.

It would appear I did.

There's no need to apologize or feel bad! Search her name on this site and you'll see a ton of fun venting. I've only been here a few months and actually found Serious Eats while searching for a place to put my 2 cents opinion of her and frustration with FN. Frankly, I was a little surprised it was so abruptly stopped, since the comments were meant to be funny, not malicious. Oh well. Search, read, laugh and enjoy.

PumpkinBear - not at all! No blacklist for you :D. It's just ironic that shortly after another SLop thread was curtailed, you raised the subject again.

I could wretch. I got a glimpse of the "Extra" show last night and they highlighted SLop with one of the (now grown up) kids from Head Of The Class, saying she could teach him how to cook, etc. Then, the host said something about, "Wow, I predict some 'couples' news about those two..." OMG. How nauseating. They did cut away to a shot of SLop driving an expensive car and I thought to myself, "Look what you can get peddling cake mix and junky shortcuts in the kitchen." I reminded myself that real food is so much better and I'm happy to get into my Saturn to drive to Fresh Market and buy great ingredients. I care enough about my friends and family not to slowly poison them.

I feel better now, at first I thought I was going to have to create a new identity to participate in the forums. I am a food purist and when I see mushroom soup wiggling out of a can, my sense of reason goes right out the window! It is great to keep it simple, but keep it REAL!! I am still baffled about the cake with the corn nuts, as I thought they were barnyard animal feed. Love the name SLop!!! Okay if I adopt it?

I have to say of all things that I "disagreed" with by and large the support or lack thereof for a food network show is the least of anyone's worry. I was far more taken aback by "no picnics for cancer patients". That one kicked me right between the eyes and left a mark.
The thing I enjoy about our community here is we can agree to disagree. We can talk about food we like and hate. People who make food we like or dislike. Blogs, books and shows we care for or do not care for. Just talk about food.
I have learned in my time in the blogosphere that people are diverse, opinons and tastes vary and I cannot predict who is going to support or detract from any topic. I am glad to be here and with the collective lot of you. Good, bad or with picnics. (ha ha)

@Jerzee....I thought that one would have been better titled "better food", and they missed the point of celebrating life. I got my hackles up (they're still on the roof) on the WalMart discussion. Interesting though, we both get emotionally involved when we feel those who have already been beaten or hurt by life or disease are treated or talked about in a deragatory manner.

@Jerz - What do you mean by "no picnic for cancer patients"?

@ Crazyspice - you may certainly adopt the term "SLop." Many of us have :D!

You know - I wish TVFN would get behind Dave Lieberman. His schtick is bargain cooking. Yes, he sometimes uses sparse amounts of more expensive stuff but in the end, it's all real food. I've watched him a couple of times and I like his style. He cooks like a real man - he makes a racket in the kitchen always banging pots and pans around. And he's a cutie. Anyhoo - if TVFN wants to get behind an effort - make it real food at affordable prices instead of fake food.

I've always found that one of the great ironies for me in terms of watching the Food Network is that the shows I really love, in particular Barefoot Contessa, showcase recipes I could never afford to make on a regular basis. I'm 23 years old and on a very limited income. As bizarre as it sounds, I really do wish that I could blow a majority of my money on truffles, $30 bottles of olive oil or that I could make seafood paella for my boyfriend all the time, but I can't. The Food Network has this habit of creating shows that either shocase foods like Sandra Lee's and Rachel Ray's or food like Ina Garten's and Michael Chiarello's which are just totally inaccessible to people on a limited budget.

@chiff the infamous post about what cancer patients should or should not eat at a survivors party. The mark from that boot stung my ass cheeks.

@Jerz - Welll, I might be completely off base here but if it were a "survivors" party of any kind, I'd say fancy, celebratory foods should be offered. IMNSHO, beating cancer (or at least giving it a good run for its money) is up there with winning the Olympics. My mother did it. We never stopped celebrating.

@PBear - Give Dave Lieberman a watch. I love his food. He's always feeding a crowd and he does it on next to nothing. As for $30 bottles of olive oil, that's not necessary to make really good food. Buy the best of what you can afford and then do your best with it. You'll succeed every time.

I'd recommend Paula Deen but she takes what should be cheap, southern food and drowns it in butter. I know the southerners fry a lot of stuff but I think she takes opportunities to add fat whenever possible. Um...I don't think so.

Embrace those cheap cuts of meat that do well braised. Even in the summer, a long cooked pork shoulder shredded to feed a crowd at a backyard party or picnic - or just because you feel like it - is always a winner. If you have the luxury of a grill, cook the shoulder on the grill for a while, then cook it overnight in the oven or in a really large crock pot with liquid and veggies. Next day, you're a hero. The smokiness of the grill time adds a dimension of flavor but it will be just fine if cooked without the grilling step. Serve with taco sized flour tortillas and trimmings like cheese, chopped peppers, chopped onions, hot sauces, sour cream, salsa. It's a party - and it's not expensive.

I think Dave Liberman has been somewhat blacklisted from Food Network because he made some disparaging remarks about the Food Network at the 2007 (note the date) SoBe Wine & Food Festival. (Behold, I have linkage.) All the poor guy has now is an online series that hasn't even gotten the same push as Adam's The FN Dish.

What a shame! He is adorable and a good cook. Sounds like he's on a real downhill slide. Somebody rescue him, please! That link above shows a real trainwreck. I wonder what Michael Chiarello was doing there?

He has been on Saturdays! I've seen him recently. I wish Good Morning America would adopt him as the chef in residence and keep Shamdra off that particular broadcast. After all, that position was once occupied by Julia Child.
