Where to eat in Kauai?

I'm headed to Kauai (staying in Waimea) for a week of rest and relaxation and need your recommendations for some serious eats! Also curious to hear if anyone has the scoop on the local farmers' markets and what's in season this time of year.

Don't miss Roy's.

I've been a couple times and while I forget the name of the restaurants, do not miss Lappert's Ice Cream. It's a mini-chain in Hawaii but it's soooooo good. I highly recommend the pumpkin (hopefully they still have it!).

Roy's, of course.

If you'll be in Waimea, in the neighboring town of Hanapepe is the Hanapepe Cafe. You'll need reservations in advance of the day you go. It's a humble place and very simple, and quite good. Go on the night of the Hanapepe Art Walk. Also, for fancy beachfront dining, in nearby Poipu, the Beach House is very good.

On the north shore, Postcards was my favorite. The Mixed Plate is the local dive for great local food, very cheap. And the health food store there has a good deli window for sandwiches.

For a fun, 'new age' experience, go to The Blossoming Lotus in Kapa'a.

Just remembered the farmers markets. I lived on the north shore for a while so am more familiar with those. Don't know about the Waimea side markets. Kapa'a has a wonderful Wed.market in the parking lot of a kid's ballpark. Odd hours though, I forget when - 2pm or something like that. Tuesday, 2pm, is my favorite in Hanalei on the north shore. Thursday is the first (and best) of two markets in Kilauea, again on the north shore. It's in the parking lot near the Kilauea Bakery. *Lighthouse Bistro next door? Very, very pleh. Saturday morning is the second Kilauea market, next to the post office.

The markets there are very, very basic, but there is always some suprise or another. Be sure to have a Young coconut, if you never have, and eat the meat after you've drunk the water. I could live on those.

If you're looking for a local favorite, try Hamura's Saimin in Lihue. Their saimin, teriyaki chicken sticks, and lilikoi chiffon pie are popular.

Aloha from Kauai,
Hamura's is great food but they have not been too good keeping the place clean, just a warning though it has been awhile since I went in months ago. You might like Garden Island Barbecue for local grinds, just be sure to go NO MSG. My wife and I really like Hukilau Lanai over by Coconut Marketplace, excellent atmosphere and the food and service are sensational. Upstairs at Duke's by the Marriott is great, awesome salad bar and view toward Kalapaki Bay!! For breakfast, you will dig Eggbert's at the marketplace or Kountry Kitchen up in Kapaa. Caution in going to Ono Diner in Lihue, mixed results there though the new location is much better. Some good quick bites can be had at the Coconut Marketplace but stay away from Harley's - serious problems there. Hula Girl is enjoyed by many and TC's Grill is pretty satisfying for the usual fare. Farmers Markets - if you can make the one in Kapaa on Weds. at 3, that is the best. For more info on Farmers Markets and more, visit http://GoKauai.com/garden/farmers_markets.html Enjoy the surf!!

PS - Blossoming Lotus is by far much more than 'a new age experience' as previous comment mentioned. Voted Best Restaurant on Kauai by Honolulu Advertiser last year, this place is outstanding. Located in Kapaa.

Check out www.ediblehawaiianislands.com for a full list of farmers' markets on all the Hawaiian Islands.

If you make it up north, in Hanalei, Bar Acuda has tapas style pupus and dinner, in Kilauea, the Kilauea Fish Market, on the way to the Lighthouse, has a great lunch. Info on both can also be found at www.ediblehawaiianislands.com

Aloha
