What are your favorite sites to buy hard to find food?

There are certain foods I grew up with, or have grown to love, that are darned near impossible to find, at least without major hassle. So I've turned to internet ordering. It's seriously improved the quality of my life. Tomoe Ame and Umi candy are no longer a distant dream when I order from cybersnacks.net. My favorite mustard in the world (Pommery Mustard w/Green Peppercorns) is just a click away with frenchfeast.com. Do you have any faves? I'm always looking for great shopping websites.

Marky's has a jaw-dropping selection of incredible gourmet foods including caviar, exotic mushrooms and what I recently purchased as a gift for my BF, 50 y/o Balsamic Vinegar. The merchandise was perfect and delivery happened exactly when they said it would.

No experience with this site but a very good friend swears by igourmet.

I used to get tons of stuff from Thai Grocer before I moved to the Tampa area where there is a great Asian ingredient store nearby.

For spices, I love either Pendery's and Penzey's. Both are great with fabulous product and reasonable shipping.

for some reason my links didnt work, maybe because i was trying to get too fancy with the tags, so here they are again:

www.earthydelights.com

www.mikuniwildharvest.com

www.zingermans.com

A couple of people have said recently that they have trouble with links in posts. For those of you trying to embed links, the HTML you need is shown below, under HTML HINTS. Copy that and paste it into your post where you want to insert the link. You should see this:

<a href="URL">link/a>

Then, in a new window or new tab, find the website you want to link to. Copy its URL. Go back to your post and replace the just the letters URL with the copied URL, making sure you don't delete the equal sign (=) or the quotation marks. Then, where is says LINK, type whatever text you want stand for the link in your post. It can be anything ... a word, a phrase, any thing you want. Just be sure you don't delete the slash or the A after it (/a). When you are done you should see something like this:

<a href="www.mysite.html">CLICK HERE/a>

Note the extra bracket in the middle .. don't delete that. In the preview of your comment, you should see your link highlighted. If you roll over it with your mouse, you should see the actual URL displayed somewhere in your browser (in Safari it is at the bottom of the screen) so you can check that it is the right URL.

seyo: your links point back to the serious eats page. Looks like you copied the URL of the post and added the name of the site you wanted. Try opening the sites you want to link to in new tabs or windows. Then you can go back & forth between it & the serious eats page while composing your post.

Mystery explained!!! Thanks kjgibson. I thought you needed special programs and super technical expertise. Very well done! I believe even I can do it and can't wait to try.

I love good food-shopping sites, too. I mostly order from igourmet, eurogrocer.com, britishgoodsonline.com, cameronsbritishfoods.com and cruets.com (oil and vinegar, but check out their cruets, they are really nice!). I've never ordered from Penzey's, but I've browsed their site and they look incredible. Lucky for me, I have a very good (and large!) Asian Supermarket in the area, so I'm all set when I look for Chinese or Japanese ingredients..

The Baker's Catalogue from King Arthur Flour has lots of goodies. That's where I get Tahitian Vanilla which i never see in a regular supermarket

seyo is right ... when you omit the http prefix of the URL, the POSTING app completes the URL for you, prefixing it with the current location. Very considerate but very wrong! If it has to add anything -- which I think it should not -- it should be just "http://" part of the URL. Adding "seriouseats..." is practically guaranteed to be wrong!

I always cut & paste URLs 'cuz I don't trust my typing. It is usually wrong too :-)

BTW, a URL, by definition, includes the "http://" part so the HTML hints below are correct.

Now, back to our regular programming .... has anyone had any experience with D'Artgnan's?

I've never ordered directly from them, but looking at their prices, it seems worth it. A .8 - 1lb moulard duck breast goes for about $14 here in nyc, on their site it's $9. Havent calculated how it works out with shipping, but my guess is if you buy enough, it would be a much better deal.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned www.tienda.com yet! Great site.

I'll try making a good link another day--promise. :-)

chisai, if you live in new york city, you can get botan ame at pearl river on broadway {and i love it too!}

Polana.com for great Polish treats.

cybercita - Another ami fan! I really like Botan Rice Candy, but I actually prefer Tomoe Ame. The texture is denser and chewier. Of course, I have to go without the stickers, but... You know, I remember when they had actual little toys in there. Oh well, clearly, I am ancient.

Also, if I buy in 1 lb bags, it's way, way cheaper, even with shipping and handling.

And yes, I am a NYC girl.

Have always loved Zingerman's and I moved to Ann Arbor MI last year so I get to shop at the deli every week just like normal grocery shopping. I think A2 has more gourmet grocery stores for a town it's size than any other. A foodie's paradise! Check Zingerman's site - it's graphically funky and they are the nicest people in the world.

chisai,

i remember the toys. they were tucked into a clever little separate compartment on the side. i guess i'm pretty ancient too, because when i first started eating botan ame, it cost five cents a box. we used to get them in chicago's chinatown -- after dinner, we would stroll around all the curio stores. i still like to do that!
