There's a world of pies out there . . . but what are they?
I'm exploring the world of pies for one of my blogs. I'm going with the idea that every culture has a pie (pie= base or top + filling). So far, I've considered pastry pies, tarts, pizza, calzones, pasties, turnovers, knish, and empanadas - can anyone suggest other types of pie (or dishes similar to pie)? Asian, African, Latin American, Eastern Europe, Indian, etc.?
I'll appreciate any help remembering those pies that I'm clearly forgetting!

My favorite unusual pie is a pasta pie, Karyn. If you've never made one or had one, they are both great fun and delicious, too.

Empanadas in South America. A couple of years ago, I visited a dozen wineries as part of a group of writers, and everywhere we were met with them, and nowhere were they the same.
And they were NOT deep-fried, they were baked. All of them were divine.

French Canadian meat pie..tourquaire (sp?), ground beef, ground pork, onion, cinnamon and clove...assemble and bake...delicious.

I'm making my boyfriend wrack his brains for something Danish... so much of the more complicated food (i.e. not boiled) here is either French or German, so that it can't be considered authentically Danish; the only thing I can think of is 'hindbaer snitter' ('raspberry slices'), which consists of a bottom crust, a layer of raspberry jam, a top crust, and white icing sprinkled with 'hundreds and thousands'.

Ah: 'kartoffelgratin'. Clearly based on a French concept, and consisting of a crust filled with sliced potatoes, cream, and emmenthaler.

Is this too easy? Doesn't quiche qualify as a pie? Do pies have to have a crust? How about the Spanish, potato based tortilla or the universally beloved flan (by any other name, as well)?

Nothing more homey than a chicken pot pie made from "scratch", I served it to a friend who said, "this is delicious, I've never eaten a chicken pie that wasn't frozen".
