Prunes are no laughing matter...

Prunes pack a punch nutritionally...antioxidants & fiber galore! Most often prunes are used as an addition to recipes....on top of the morning oatmeal, stuffings or in sauces used with pork. If you want a one-two punch, make bran muffins & add diced prunes! I add the mini-prunes to trail mix. Have you tasted the flavored ones---orange, lemon or cherry? What do you do with the famous dried plum?

I absolutely love prunes. The old fashioned, not-afraid-to-be-prunes prunes. Not "Dried Plums." (WTF? Raisins are dried grapes but are they billed that way on the package??? Noooooo.)

Prunes go really well with pork dishes, especially something long cooked. They enrich sauces and create beautiful color.

As for eating out of hand, lemme at 'em. They are definitely nutrition-packed but they're also natural-sugar-packed and calorie-packed so snack lightly.

I have never tried a flavored prune. I like pruniness in my prunes.

I love them covered in chocolate (there is a branch of a French chocolate shop that has them), I put them in Christmas pudding, and in stuffing for goose and as an ingredient in various meat dishes. I like them as is (I had a 4th grade teacher who kept a glass jar of them on her desk, and encouraged the students to help themselves freely), and in yogurt, too.

The flavoured ones sound a bit odd. Not the flavours themselves, but I never took to flavoured cranberries, either, though.

Anyone remember Chicken Marbella from the Silver Palate cookbook? Its a delicious chicken dish with prunes, capers, and green olives.
Also, plumped prunes pureed with a touch of vinegar makes an excellent sweet & sour dipping sauce.

i absolutely love prunes. i like to eat them straight out of the container as a snack. i know i would like them on top of yogurt so i should give that a try. but i don't like them in any savory dishes - but i'm that way with most fruits.

I have a Jaques Pepin recipe for pork tenderloin with prunes & port .. it is a favorite of ours. I've made the same dish with turkey legs for a my no-red-meat eating friends.

'm trying to find a mail order source for Prune d'Agen for this but no luck yet. Any one know of one?

Oh, and David Lebowitz blogged recently about duck braised with port & prunes ... search his blog here. I made it - it was great.

I have also added them to a peanut butter sandwich!

Anyone try prune puree as a fat replacement in baked goods like brownies?

A saw an appetizer recipe that a prune was stuffed with an almond & then wrapped in bacon & broiled...good?

David Lebovitz also had Prune Blogging Thursday back in 2005 with plenty of great entries from around the world, including my use of prunes in Nick Maglieri's X-cookie (a Sicilian cookie that is a rich, eggy dough filled with a mixture of dried fruit, almonds, chocolate, rum and other goodies).

Marc...thanks for the link to David's Prune Blogging Thursday...some interesting recipes were submitted:) I agree, your cookies do look a little complicated but the ingredients sure sound like it would be worth a try!

I LOVE prunes. I snack on them at work, they are delicious. My ex loved them, but I was hesitant, so he bought me the cherry-flavored ones. They were good, but then I tried the plain old prunes, and I liked them better.

If you're introducing prunes to your diet, do it slowly-for digestive reasons. That's all I'll say about that.

I once made a pork tenderloin with a prune stuffing, and it was fabulous.

The odd thing is I love plums but HATE prunes except in one thing and one thing only:

I do not eat prunes per se (just as I don't eat any other dried fruit), but I do cook beef with prunes and red wine, and the flavour imparted by the prunes is out of this world. See, one doesn't have to eat prunes to be able to enjoy them:-).
