Popcorn's poppin' today!

Bob over on the Slashfood site reminded readers that today is National Popcorn Day. One of his links led me to popcorn.org which contains tons of info on all things popcorn related...including recipes for flavoring your popping oil with spices & peanut butter popcorn balls. How often do you eat popcorn? What do you season with or drizzle on before eating? What brand & method makes your popcorn irresistably good? Do you use popcorn in non-edible projects...like stringing on thread to make a Christmas tree garland or I have even used it as a cushioning when mailing packages. When do you snack on popcorn...at movies or while sitting before your laptop?

I pack popcorn as a snack all the time - it's quick to eat when I'm on a ten minute break at work. I like the tri-colored kind that I air pop and eat plain, though sometimes I'll pour some tamari on it when I'm craving salt.

I never eat popcorn, but by sheer coincidence today, I was watching my granddaughter, and we walked by a popcorn store. We went inside and bought cheddar popcorn, and it was delicious. Now I have to try to stop eating it.

I actually had popcorn for dinner one night this week... just wanted something munchy and salty. I fix mine on the stovetop usually popped in olive oil. I normally just shake on some salt, or every once in a while, parmesan cheese.

we always have ours topped with lemon ghee, fried crumbled sage leaves and nutritional yeast. unbelievable.

I buy Orville Redenbacher in the jar (not always easy to find) and pop on the stove with canola oil, but I'd air pop it if I was going to pack with it - great idea! I like it with a little salt, in the evening watching tv. If I'm sharing, I'll add a little melted butter. I've tried lots of seasonings and cheeses, but the simpler the better. For movie parties, or Super Bowl, I'll make tons and offer cinnamon sugar, cheeses, hot spices, etc.

I do not like microwave popcorn.

My children and I used to string it on the tree when they were young. The trick was to make sure it was stale and even a little moist, otherwise it just crumbled when pierced with a needle. We interspersed cranberries which dyed our fingers. Once the tree was taken down, we put it outdoors and the birds had a feast. I forgot about popcorn balls - we did that too. Great memories. Hope to do them all again with grandchildren.

air popped with melted butter and sea salt.

The stovetop "Whirlypop" popper works beautifully, almost never leaving unpopped kernels behind. You get to use the oil of your choice (even bacon fat works great!) and know that you're not eating chemicals: just corn, oil & a bit of salt.

Who needs a microwave?

Popcorn is an inexpensive snax, too. Does add some fiber to a person's diet...I'm trying to promote it's health benefts:)

Making popcorn balls is a fun activity & ice breaker when gathering with friends. I also like to float popped corn on tomato soup.

I love popcorn and so does Izzy. I buy local kernels from our Greenmarket or I buy organic ones from Whole Foods. I make it on the stovetop and top with salt or with a tiny bit of butter, OR buttermilk powder..Definitely one of our favorite snacks. In the summer I make a giant pot and pack it in waxed paper bags to share with Izzy's friends in the park.

POPCORN!!!! One of my all time favorite snacks (or dinner or sometimes breakfast)

I like it with melted butter (butter, not margarine or any other fake stuff) and seasoned salt. Market Day (school fundraiser) has an awesome seasoned salt - but it is very pricey!! ($9 for a container - the ones I have gotten have been free with another purchase - I will not pay $9 for seasoned salt)

I also had popcorn for dinner one night this week. I try to eat it plain (well, popped in canola oil and a little salt in my whirly pop thing on the stove) but can't seem to stop myself from putting on melted butter and extra salt if sharing with my husband. I'll have to try sea salt. Will sometimes use the microwave stuff but it doesn't compare to the "real" thing

We do it on the stove top, but with the new ceramic one, I wonder. Does anyone have any experience with this? We go thru phases. Sometimes we have it as a frequent snack, and then we seem to forget about it for a year or two. Butter used to be our topping of choice. I can enjoy it without anything, but my husband must have salt. Great parmesan is wonderful.
Years ago, I did popcorn strands that the greedy beagle ate as far up as she could reach - we couldn't blame her, could we?

When I want a sweet taste, I like the cinnamon sugar like PerkyMac.

Anyone make homemade caramel corn?

What proportions of oil to corn do you use when making on the stove top popcorn?

I have been tring to get back to that method and it is coming out gummy.

I love popcorn, though I go through phases with it. I can go for months without eating it, and then BOOM! it again becomes a 2x weekly habit. I can't stand microwave popcorn which I think smells disgusting when it cooks. I use a whirlypop which I think makes the best popcorn and takes about the same amount of time as the dreaded microwave stuff does. I can't stand butter on it and instead use either Sazon Goya or curry powder or Old Bay Seasoning and I can easily finish off a whole batch if I'm having it for dinner.

I just use a pot on the stove and shake it continuously once it starts popping for two reasons. 1 Keeps the unpopped kernels on the bottom. 2. Releases steam which toughens the corn. As soon as it has popped, I immediately remove the cover for the same reason. Season while hot.

For a large pot: 3 Tbl. oil (veg or canola) - 1/2 cup corn
Smaller pot 2 Tbl. oil - 1/3 cup corn

I have an electric stove (sigh....I know!), and preheat the pan on the line between medium and medium high. When it starts popping hard, I turn it down just a little. Nothing worse than burnt popcorn.

I have had popcorn for Sunday night supper for as long as I can remember....60 some years. I've started popping mine in a microwave popper, top it with butter, salt and fresh ground pepper. I also drink a glass of cold milk with it unless I'm feeling real sassy, then I'll have a Blizzard or a malt.

i have it a few times a year. i love nutritional yeast and powdered kelp on it. i know it sounds too healthy to actually taste good, but it's delish.

I love to drizzle my popcorn with some chocolate syrup. The combination of the buttery popcorn and chocolate syrup is unreal!! Trust me, it tastes great!!

current favorite popcorn topping:butter parmesan cheese and chili powder.
or if I have it -Tom Douglas's Salmon rub is great on popcorn- spicy, sweet, salty! I have also tried galic salt & parmesan.

Other seasonings I have read about: dill, lemon, Italian dressing or dry mustard---not sure I will be adding these to my fresh hot popcorn, tho'

I'm a victim of that famous Pavlovian psychological experiment and always want popcorn in the movie theater! Never anywhere else!
