Irresistible dishes, you just can't say no to...

When you go into a restaurant what is a menu item you can't pass up?

I've often been suckered in by a sandwich promising focaccia with grilled veg, aioli and/or pesto.

I almost never get dessert, but if they have coconut cream pie (not coconut custard), or coconut cake..........I'm a goner.

duck. i just can't help myself.

Fried calamari. If it's on the menu, I MUST order it! In fact, it's got to the point that I judge the entire restaurant by the quality of their calamari alone.

lemon rice soup. When done right, it is a huge favorite of mine, 90% of the time is is usually substandard.
chopped salads - again, same as above.

It is usually some kind of huge salad with ingredients I rarely would buy & a salad dressing to go with!

Just say the words soft shell crab, and I am there!!!!!

A reuben sandwich. I am usually disappointed but hope springs eternal.

A side of broccoli rabe, even though I make it all the time at home. Sweetbreads -- I'm so glad that offal is being used more these days.

anything with pumpkin in it! but particularly pumpkin ravioli...ohhh yum.

I'll second soft shell crab and sweetbreads...

And I'll raise you an awesome hamburger (I know, I know), a really excellent beef dip if I know the au jus is top-notch (and preferably made with medium rare prime rib), and my biggest weakness of all...

QUAIL

God, I just love me some really good quail! (Although squab and other tiny birds can also tempt me!)

I'm a sucker for artichoke hearts. While I won't necessarily order it, it definitely catches my interest. That, and rigatoni (for some unknown reason).

Duck and pig belly.

Anything interesting like hearts and tongue. I am curious and if I see something new and unconventional I'm eager to give it a try.

Pulled pork (probably a strange weakness, but I LOVE it), and I guess you could also include cochon de lait. When it comes to desserts, nine times out of ten I'll go with the chocolate option because I cannot say no!

Jonfoxx, I know how you feel about judging a restaurant based on one item. For me, it's usually bread. There is one great restaurant near me that makes homemade artisan-style sourdough rolls, and they are always served piping hot right out of the oven. LOVE IT.

bread pudding. absolutely love it. A restaurant nearby me at home has a weekly sunday buffet with a huge pan of it everytime. The best was a blueberry w/tons of brown sugar streusel but there have also been apple cinnamon french toast, dark chocolate mocha, and white chocolate cranberry. I just can't stop eating it. :)

Eggplant parm. If it's there, I MUST have it.

I really have to fight the urge but sometimes I simply give in to potato gnocchi. (How it's dressed is unimportant.)

Not long ago, I had hot spinach dip flowing in my veins - I simply could not avoid ordering it - until I read a "copycat" recipe for it. OMG, what an artery clogger. Gave that up :(.

bananas foster

I have never been able to resist any of the following, and there are several places around Manhattan that have ALL of these on the menu: Oysters and/or clams on the half-shell. Steak tartare. Quail/Squab. Veal chop. Creamed spinach. Cheese course. Pearl tapioca pudding.

Sushi. Pretty much any kind of sushi. It's a terrible addiction. I could be the president of Sushi Addicts Anonymous, I swear.

Grilled sea scallops, I do not often cook them at home b/c of the cost and the family are not really big fans. I also cannot resist homemade chicken soup and pata e fagioli ( in the appropriate types of restaurants). I use the soup as a standard to judge the entire restaurant as well.

This is probably pathetic but I have an obsession with buffalo chicken sandwiches and if they're on the menu...it's really hard for me to say no.

Chew on That

I have a very serious weak spot for croissants whenever I'm in a cafe or bakery...and anywhere else, I generally have to order any menu item involving brie - omelets, sandwiches, or (best of all) brie en croute.

anything with goat cheese. pizza, salad, spread on a sandwiches, stuffed in something. I'm a total sucker.

If I see the words avocado, guacamole or carmalized onions I'm there.

Anything with lots of salt and grease. My body can't seem to get enough. (Actually linguine and clam sauce. I just can't say no!)

Hillary - I feel your pain. I don't even like chicken that much, but slap some chili sauce on it, call it "Buffalo" and I'm there. Have you had the buffalo chicken salad at Heartland Brewery? My oh my.
