Ideas for BUNKO easy dinner
I am hosting BUNKO @ my place next month for the 12 of us crazy gals. I'm wanting to do a yummy chocolate fondue for after dinner, served with marshmallows, bananas, graham crackers, strawberries...maybe even pretzels! But....I'm kind of running out of ideas for dinner....Was thinking maybe Mardi Gras type food & drinks......I'd love some original ideas. I've hosted sooo many times I have used up all my special recipes and want to do something new!

My favorite New Orleans dish is crab étouffée. My mother and brother-in-law made it every New Year's Eve, along with gumbo and jambalaya. Lots of crab, shrimp and andouille sausage. I wish I had the recipes. He got them personally from a chef in The Big Easy.
I'd like some lemon or orange pound cake with that fondue! We used to do them all the time - for dinner and dessert. We cooked beef & shrimp with lots of dipping sauces, along with salad, potato and crusty bread. Cheese fondue on occasion. Always made for a fun evening with great food, lots of conversation and laughs. Time to dust off the fondue pots and try it again.
What is BUNKO?

I am in a Bunko group, too. So much fun!
We do theme parties, too. Our February meeting is usually Valentines Day themed, but I would prefer Mardi Gras. You could make blackened fish. I do mine out on the patio, using the gas grill burner and my trusty old iron skillet. Everyone just raves about my blackened snapper. Boil up some peanuts for an appetizer, then add a little Dirty Rice and Collard Greens and you'll have a "Big Easy" feast for your friends.

All excellent ideas, thanks! I never thought about adding pound cake to dip in the chocolate, but that sounds perfect! I love blackened fish, but have never made it. I think I'll try it out on the family first!
So to PerkyMac: BUNKO is a group of at least 12 folks (three tables, 4 each) where you roll three dice, you're on 2 person teams at each table, and the point is to get the highest score. You roll for 1s first then your 2s, and so on. We play 4 rounds, because we need a fairly early evening (we play the 3rd Tuesday of the month). There are different prizes, depending on your individual success or failure! We do most BUNKOS (3 of a kind of the # your are rolling for) most wins, 2nd most wins, most losses (we call it the BFL - big fat loser - prize!) and a "traveling bunko prize. It's really a hoot...we eat drink gossip and just have a really good time! Only costs each of us $10 a month, so it is affordable too!

Gumbo is a great idea... if it's a casual evening, everyone can serve themselves and get down to the business at hand.
My mom has a bunko group, and usually ends up hosting in March. She makes corned beef and cabbage, and people either eat it as a traditional meal or all done up on a sandwich. Folks seem to love it.

Thanks for explaining Maleficent. It sounded like it had something to do with the police (bunko squad?) or the Sopranos (the low pitched ones...haha). Sounds like fun. I've always been a fan of card games, board games, etc. and the more, the merrier. Do you eat while playing, or take a meal break?

Hey PerkyMac!
We usually gather around 6:30 and grab the food and drink and eat and gab for about 1/2 hour or so, then it's down to business! Of course, eating while rolling is always acceptable! We usually munch on dessert after the rounds are done and the prizes awarded. Since we only play the 4 rounds, there's lots of time to talk, eat, drink & be merry!
It is lots of fun, I recommend it to anyone. I have friends who do couples BUNKO, and they all do potluck, and some even have more than 12 players. They usually just award the prize money..certain dollar amounts for each prize. That would be fun too, but my hubby isn't interested, so it's me and the gals once a month!
