I eat ____ with cottage cheese
Mmm...cottage cheese...like it plain, eaten with any fresh fruit or scooped onto a steaming baked potato. What do you combine with cottage cheese? Unusual seasonings? Add the CC to egg dishes, casseroles, toss with hot pasta or blend into pancake batter?
What's best tasting cottage cheese on the market?
What are your specs for:
milk fat %
small or large curd
brand & size of container
I like 4%, small curd, 8 oz container of Michigan brand & served icy cold...eaten straight out of the container with an ice tea spoon:)

My favorite way to eat cottage cheese is ice cold, straight out of the container. Sometimes I add a dash of pepper, but that depends on my mood.
2% is what I buy, but I do like 4%
small curd
Knudsen's 16 oz
My next favorite way is with salted, super-ripe tomatoes, fresh out of the garden.

i like it either plain or slabbed on some nutty volkornbrot or in the summer i like little cucumber cottage cheese tea sandwiches with the crusts cut off. in fact i normally think of cottage cheese as a summer food.
i like a skim cheese but i HATE breakstones (i think thats the name - in every supermarket with the red label). blech.
ceforrester at 7:05PM on 01/08/08
Garlic powder, onion powder, lemon pepper and paprkia. Let sit for an hour or so. Eat while pretending to pay attention to job.
kitchenbea at 7:20PM on 01/08/08
I cannot get this in Canada, and I could only get it in some supermarkets in Boston, but I really liked the Hood Black Pepper & Herbs cottage cheese. It was low fat. I ate it on toast or bagels, or sometimes plain. Yes, you can add black pepper and whatnot to plain cottage cheese, but it's not the same.
wellred at 7:30PM on 01/08/08
Small curd, 2%, mixed with an equal volume of peas and topped with a tablespoon or so of sunflower seeds (shelled, obviously). I eat this by scooping it up with a piece of multigrain toast. Yum!
ceforrester: I also hate breakstones! I don't know why, but it tastes nothing like other cottage cheeses on the market! I usually get the Safeway brand Lucerne, or whatever's there that's not Breakstones.
ChristineB at 7:56PM on 01/08/08
I like Friendship brand. The 4% California Style is a total indulgence, and delicious. They don't sell it near me, so I usually buy the 1% whipped. I like it on melba toasts with a mix of black pepper, crushed red pepper and oregano.
Kerosena at 8:24PM on 01/08/08
4% large curd with applesauce and cinnamon... is it breakfast or dessert? I haven't got an aversion to Breakstone's, but I like Friendship brand better...
One thing I can't stand though is replacing ricotta cheese with cottage in lasagna -- it's just not right!

I'm convinced the difference in various brands is the type of culture used by the dairy. The household basic pancake recipe is cottage cheese, eggs, and a few dry ingredients, particularly tasty with fruit. But solo, Ilike it with pineapple.

I like Breakstone's small curd nonfat cottage cheese (it's the only one I've found that doesn't make me sick). I like it with Nature's Path Granola or Barbara's Grain Shop cereals, raisins, cashews, and peanuts. Though I also profess a certain fondness for cottage cheese with sliced, frozen bananas and peanut butter and honey.
KarynMC at 9:31PM on 01/08/08
Fruit. When fresh isn't readily available or I'm all out, I enjoy canned pineapple, or peach halves. They taste fresher than canned sliced peaches.
I make a whole meal out of the cottage cheese (small curd, 2%) and fruit. Do not like it at all naked. Penn Maid or Breakstone is usually all I can find. I know there is better outside of rural Penciltucky (Jerz - we have always called it that, no plagiarizing here).
PerkyMac at 9:33PM on 01/08/08
I just had cottage cheese for lunch today my favorite way....mixed with blue cheese, some onion, dash of Worcestershire & tabasco sauce, eaten with ruffled potato chips. It's good as a veggie dip too, but today it was only the grease & salt of chips. The cottage cheese was low fat Vermont style from Trader Joes, I usually just buy what ever low fat stuff is in the regular grocery store.
As a kid we always ate maple syrup on our cottage cheese.
windjunkie at 9:46PM on 01/08/08
When I was a child, a German immigrant neighbor manufactured cottage cheese. Large curd, whole fat (I don't think there was any other kind), and sometimes with pineapple. It was served at many meals as if it were a condiment or side dish. I think this was done out of loyalty or solidarity. I have eaten it since adulthood because of convenience, nutrition, and a tiny bit of hopeful nostalgia. The only time I truly, truly loved and looked forward to it was in England during the mid-eighties thru the mid-ninties. It was tangy and highly textured.Oh, I miss it. Does something like this exist in the U.S.? On the west coast?
islandexile at 9:58PM on 01/08/08
Avocado. Sounds gross but is delicious.
AdamH at 10:13PM on 01/08/08
Small curd - either 2% or 4% - brand wise, i vary, I like Old Home or Kemps, Belefonte... I like to mix in pineapple or cinnamon/sugar or w/ black pepper, or just plain out of the container. Now I'm craving cottage cheese.
Alm25 at 10:21PM on 01/08/08
With applesauce. It's the only way I can eat either one of those things, and only once in a rare while.
When I was little it looked to me like japanese-style curry rice. Cottage cheese as rice, and the brownish applesauce as curry. Mmmm...
mikaque at 10:36PM on 01/08/08
Mmm...you and me both, lemons. I like mine plain with either pineapple or peaches. People keep trying to convince me that savory/spicy cottage cheese is the way to go, but I'm just not feeling it yet.

I only started eating cottage cheese a couple of years ago (when I was a kid, my Gran used to give it to me sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon and I hated the stuff). But a couple of years ago I gave it another try and now I love it. Usually I buy 2% small curd, and eat it with fresh vegetables. One of my favourite combinations is with fresh bell peppers (no matter what colour), I sometimes just cut and clean half a pepper (lengthwise) and fill it with cottage cheese like a small boat. When I am not too lazy, I'll sprinkle it with some minced garlic and dill, otherwise I'll just have it "straight". Just this morning I mixed a couple of tablespoons of cottage cheese into my salad (cubed tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, red onions, dill and garlic, all small cubes), and it was a really lovely breakfast. It never occurred to me to try it with fruit (which is weird, come to think of it, because I love other cheeses with fruit), but now I'm curious :-)
brooke29 at 10:42PM on 01/08/08
MMM, thanks for asking this question JEP!! I'm a sucker for cottage cheese and HAVE to eat it every day. I love it so much. Usually, I just put some cinnamon on top and swirl it in. Sometimes, I'll add a touch of sugar if I have a sweet craving. I also make little tortilla "pizzas" with a tortilla topped with a bit of tomato sauce and parm, toasted under the broiler--sometimes I scoop a bit of cottage cheese on top and it's delicious.
Definitely 2%. Usually I only find small curd, but large is fine. I don't mind Breakstones, but I haven't had good luck with that Friendship brand. Although, I do hate those Breakstone Doubles, with the pure-sugar "fruit" toppings of pineapples and berries. It's pure syrup and it's disgusting.
luswim06 at 11:29PM on 01/08/08
I can make a meal out of a baked potato smothered with a 4% cottage cheese with salt & pepper on the whole thing. Sure I've gilded the lily with stuff like chopped green onions, bacon bits, even anchovies but always crave the basic potato/cottage pairing.
kathyvegas at 11:35PM on 01/08/08
I like my cottage cheese spooned over scrambled eggs, then sprinkled with pepper. At least I do for breakfast. Any other time, I like it with pineapple.
Small curd, no preference for fat content. I'll take anything from full to 1%. I like the biggest tub of cottage cheese one can find...only because I know I don't have to share, and can eat as much as I like.
SparklingDiamond at 12:57AM on 01/09/08
No cottage cheese here ever. It won't go down. It makes me cringe.
JerzeeTomato at 1:20AM on 01/09/08
Wow---some interesting combos & seasonings for SE's---thanks!
I have even blended in cottage cheese when making deviled eggs when I didn't have any Hellmann's on hand.

I can't stomach cottage cheese, but my husband eats a (to me) terrifying concoction he first ate at boarding school. He takes waffles, spreads them with peanut butter, loads them up with small curd, preferably 4 per cent cottage cheese, then pours maple syrup over the lot. The first time I saw him eating this I actually had to leave the table. I'm better now.
Maureen at 7:52AM on 01/09/08
Full fat, small curd straight from the tub! I don't like sweet cottage cheese so I usually add salt and pepper. Years ago one dairy (Breakstone's?) used to make a cottage cheese with chopped veggies (carrots, green peppers, etc) already in it. I haven't seen that for quite some time. Oh BTW, Maureen; absolutely anything becomes palatable when doused with maple syrup!!
RichardCrystal at 8:30AM on 01/09/08
4% small curd, usually buy Kroger's store brand, as I don't like Breakstone's either. I eat it two ways usually:
savory: finely diced english cucumbers, choped vine ripe tomatoes, salt and black pepper.
sweet: As kids we had it with strawberry jam or diced pinnapple.
radley24 at 9:18AM on 01/09/08
I love "pot" style 2% from Breakstone or Friendship, good old New York brqands. And, ever since summer camp, I eat it with potato chips as a comfort food.
I agree with one poster that cottage cheese subbing for ricotta in lasagna is wrong, but I've been known to do it because my daughter doesn't really care.
annien at 9:47AM on 01/09/08
I like the 4% small curd, usually eat it plain sprinkled with pepper. Sometimes I like to put it on sausage pizza.
aungeinphx at 10:07AM on 01/09/08
4% large curd with chopped chives, salt, and pepper. This started when I was 10 and ate it like that at the King's Arms tavern in Williamsburg. My brother and I remember that the most about the meal......"Mom....they served cottage cheese at a fancy restaurant" Also, I love it on top of fresh tomatoes...not supermarket, I have absolutely no taste and am barely red tomatoes, but I just got picked this morning tomatoes.
jcrisco at 10:19AM on 01/09/08
I like to eat it with a spoonful (or two) of corn relish or red pepper relish. Sweet/spicy versions are best. I started doing this as a young man when dining at family style Amish buffets in PA where cottage cheese and (I think) chow-chow were two of the many offerings.
grampart at 10:30AM on 01/09/08
Cottage cheese topped with thinly sliced dill pickles. It was a snack we concocted as children, and it's very comforting. If you like dill pickles...
CheesePlease at 10:49AM on 01/09/08
does anybody else like eating cottage cheese with either tuna or sardines? sounds a little fishy, but it's delicious and chock full of protein.
Mia Rose at 11:00AM on 01/09/08
Egg noodles and cottage cheese is my number one comfort food. Throw in butter and the CC when the noodles are warm with salt and lots of pepper.
It's like a no-bake kugel!
srbrooklyn at 11:12AM on 01/09/08
my mom used to put in my lunch box cling peaches and cottage cheese and fruit salad coctail and cottage cheese. I still love it today. When I go to Ponderosa, I always have that as dessert. Now I buy the cling peaches in the plastic or glass jar, instead of the canned ones. But it still a dessert that hits the spot.
I like to buy the Breakstone's individually packed mini packages - it's nicely portioned, stays fresher and I don't have to eat it all in one sitting.

this might sound uber-gross, but my dad eats cottage cheese with kraft catalina dressing on top. with ground black pepper on top of that. i LOVE it that way too. has to be catalina.
missmolly512 at 12:01PM on 01/09/08
I am shocked that no one called out cottage cheese (small curd) and apple butter - granted, I skimmed the comments, but still! Mix lightly, sprinkle with some granola, and voila, a delicious snack/breakfast/dessert. And applebutter is deceivingly good, with a generally low calorie and sugar content (make it at home or read the label carefully).
savecara at 12:16PM on 01/09/08
I like it plain and with fruit too, but my favorite way is with spaghetti. A friend of mine did this in college, and I thought he was disgusting. Then I tried it - a pile of spaghetti next to a pile of cottage cheese, co-mingling flavors...delicious!
lo82070 at 12:26PM on 01/09/08
i like the friendship 1% whipped kind with some honey stirred in, maybe some kashi golean crunch too. i also like it stirred in with egg noodles.
mickeymets at 12:55PM on 01/09/08
I enjoy 4%, large curd cottage cheese with crunchy sea salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper most every day between breakfast and lunch. The brand I usually purchase is Sinton's Nordica.
Colorado Jim at 1:35PM on 01/09/08
I really like cottage cheese pancakes (ahem, when they're made right)!
I don't usually mix fruit with my cottage cheese or anything; I'll usually eat it plain. But I have to say I'm a bit quirky about my cottage cheese. I only like certain kinds and ONLY at room temperature! I like it when its liquidy not thick and pasty.

Miss Molly -- I don't think that's so weird. During the mega salad bar days I always would get catalina dressing and it would ooze onto my cottage cheese sitting next to it. I realized that it tasted pretty darn good together.
jcrisco at 2:27PM on 01/09/08
I love 4% large curd, but generally settle for 2%. I won't eat the FF which I think is disgusting. I love cottage cheese and eat it in all the ways most people eat it - over potatoes, mixed with fruit, plain, plain w/a little salt and pepper, etc. The one really weird way I eat it (the weirdness according to my friends) is I like to mix up equal parts fruit yogurt and plain cottage cheese. I don't like commercial fruit yogurt as it's just too sweet, and I love the mouthfeel of cottage cheese, so it works out fabulously.
chisai at 3:17PM on 01/09/08
I can't believe noone has mentioned Michigan brand small curd cottage cheese. I live on the east coast (I think it is only available in the Ohio, Kentucky, and presumably Michigan) and I have people bring me several containers whenever I have a visitor from home. I like it best with snipped chives and salt and pepper over a baked potato.
breeforan at 3:45PM on 01/09/08
Toast a slice of bread, then top with cottage cheese (small curd, please). Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and pop under the broiler for a minute. Let it cool slightly and eat with a nice cuppa tea. Ahh, comfort.
moibec at 3:59PM on 01/09/08
Hillary---thanks for your link!
breeforan---that's my ONLY brand:)
Anyone use it in cheesecakes?
JEP at 6:04PM on 01/09/08
I never liked cottage cheese. But my mom used to make the old potluck standby, which I really liked. Mix a container of cottage cheese with cool whip, add Jello powder (raspberry or lime was best), and mix in fruit. We usually would put a can of pineapple and a can of mandarin oranges. Tart, tangy, sweet and creamy! But it might sound disgusting to everyone else. Well, we all grow up with some food that others think sounds gross!
misseditor at 7:44PM on 01/09/08
misseditor---your comment reminded me of the salad called "under-the-sea" which seems like lime jello with cottage cheese---I'm not one who likes jello, so always tried to avoid this when served!
JEP at 8:34PM on 01/09/08
Ok, this seems weird but I started eating because of dietary restrictions and then grew to like it -- cottage cheese and rice that has been warmed up with margarine and kosher salt.
Put a scoop of each side by side in a bowl. Don't mix them, just eat a bit of one and then the other!
I swear, its really comforting.
trabo at 8:48PM on 01/09/08
I hope that your ideas make me like cottage cheese. Every few years I try because it's healthy. I think that some of the ways the I disliked it less included eating it with pepper, salt and cucumber, and with applesauce.
CanadianFoodieGirl at 1:08PM on 01/10/08
Oooh, reading this makes me remember some old favorites. After school, one of my favorite snacks was to make a "parfait" out of crushed potato chips and cottage cheese.
Also, egg noodles or elbows with butter, salt, parsley, and cottage cheese. Imagine my disappointment when trying kugel for the first time. It looks right, but it's all sweet and raisin-y. Not on my watch!
Kerosena at 3:06PM on 01/10/08
Hey i see no one mentioned cottage cheese with a few slices of bacon to the side
rkincaide at 12:48AM on 05/24/08
I remember the first time I saw someone put salt and pepper on cottage cheese... :o I thought it was the strangest thing I had ever seen.
I've always been a "fruit adder" when it comes to cottage cheese. Pineapple, berries, you name it. I also love it on toast with a good strawberry preserve or orange marmalade.
I have yet to try it with salt and pepper.
chiff0nade at 7:32AM on 05/24/08
1/2 cup cottage cheese
1/4 cup sour cream
lots of salt and pepper
mix well
eat with potato chips
this is my #1 comfort food.
nightmoon at 6:45PM on 05/24/08
I *adore* cottage cheese. 2-4% large curd if I can find it. Two favourite meals with cottage cheese are as follows:
One lightly toasted English muffin, 2 boiled eggs, a spoonful of cottage cheese sprinkled with cracked pepper and ample amounts of hot sauce. *drool*
Canned albacore tuna, drained then mixed with half cottage cheese and half salsa. Consume fishy dip atop wasabröd. MMMMM :D
feriorrenna at 7:05PM on 05/24/08
My father used to eat it salted with a liberal application of black pepper after having slathered the top with a healthy (unhealthy?) amount of soft butter. It was the ONLY way he'd take it.
grampart at 7:12PM on 05/24/08
I love cottage cheese... large curd 4% is best but I'll eat others
Mia Rose- I love it with tuna and sardines
Miss Molly- I love it with Catalina, try cottage cheese, Catalina dressing and grated sharp cheddar cheese- looks gross, but is so delicious
and SRBrooklyn- cottage cheese with egg noodles, cinnamon and sugar is comfort food for breakfast
deefine at 8:59PM on 05/24/08
4%, small curd, usually the generic conventional brand (although I want to start making my own from scratch, per Alton's recipe). I can't stand Breakstone's, and find the organic stuff to be too sour to me - cottage cheese should be creamy!
I usually eat it plain, although I like it with bananas and raisins, or with chili and garlic powder, or as a cheap substitute for ricotta in Ameritalian recipes, or with sliced cucumbers and a little lemon, or (before I was allergic to 'em) as bell pepper dip, or with my sugar-coated breakfast cereal in lieu of milk (strangely tasty) ... I like cottage cheese.
jenilowrance at 12:57AM on 05/25/08
cantalope or canned peaches, or luction noodles.
iliana at 3:58AM on 05/25/08
I prefer 4%, but 2% is... barely OK. I like it plain, with fruits, usually peaches or pears, scrambled into buttery eggs, in kugel with crushed pineapple, with lemon curd, with apple butter and I haven't had it in YEARS, but I used to love it in the lime jello thing with crushed pineapple. It was commonly served with tomatoes (from the garden) when I was a kid, but I haven't served it that way in my home.
My grandmother liked hers with a big dollop of mayonnaise and black pepper from the big, square Schilling or Safeway brand cans. It seems like there were only about three cans and one plastic shaker the whole time I was growing up. Since they were probably one pound cans, that may be an accurate count. Really, it's no wonder I thought I didn't like pepper as a kid.

I'm not a cottage cheese fan....I've never been able to get past the squeekiness (yes...that's a word! lol)...when you eat it.
