Food goodies in Paris?
My friend is heading to Paris! Any suggestions on food to pick up that can be brought back here? What about any customs/TSA regulations regarding foodstuffs? Any favorite cafes/must eat places you recommend? Thanks!

Good food can be found all over the city. Dont think for a second though that the Dept of Agriculture goons will hesitate about confiscating any or all of it on their own whim, even if what you have is supposedly on their list of approved items. Generally speaking, only food in sealed metal cans, jars and bottles, and dry goods like candies or cookies can be brought back, but even these have been confiscated. Strictly forbidden items include any fresh produce, meats, fungi and dairy, live plants or animals. Basically, all the good stuff. Canned patés, foie gras are technically fine, but this is where you can be robbed.
My rule of thumb is: bring back whatever you want to bring back, hide it well, dont tell them you have anything, and be prepared to lose it all. They certainly did not find my stuff the last time I went.

Go for sealed items as seyo suggested..tins or jars of foie gras, sardines, duck confit, chocolates, macarons..I think there was a thread about this a few months back that you might search. Also if you search my blog for "paris" I have several food recommendations from our visit this past summer.

Chocolate shouldn't pose any problems at customs - if you're a chocoholic, Christian Constant's stuff (shop on Rue d'Assas) is amazing.
