Do you brown bag it for lunch?
And if so, what are your faves? I've become addicted to my Mr. Bento, loving all the variety I can pack into that baby. But - I'm running out of ideas. Today? Diced mango, plain lowfat Stonyfield Farms yogurt, carrot sticks, sharp cheddar cheese and Triscuits. It's tasty and ummm, very, very orange. So, what do you make? Are you a thermos, brown bag or bento person?

I have one of those freebie insulated lunch bags complete with the hospital name that I tote to work daily. Fage 2%, fresh fruit (changes seasonally...now I'm on a clementine kick) and something sweet like a piece of good dark chocolate or Kashi chewy trail mix granola bar. The rumors you hear about hospital coffee are all true...so I drink tap water as my beverage!

I don't take a lunch but I pack my kids and husbands almost every day. They get:
Chicken caesar salads
PBJ on crackers
Graham crackers and cream cheese
Bagels and cream cheese
Anything from last night's dinner
Carrots and spinach dip
Cut up apples
Homemade granola bars, cookies
Hardboiled eggs
Mini candy bars

I pack my lunch almost every day with either leftovers from the night before. Or some kind of salad, part of my regular rotation, a greek salad with chick peas, tarragon chicken salad. In the winter i like to make a big pot of soup on Sunday ans stack the fridge with lunch size containers.

As I grow increasingly thrifty with time, I have gotten accustomed to packing my lunch literally every day. The best/easiest thing to do is to make extra dinner, and pack it in re-used takeout containers (my co-workers constantly ask where I get my lunch!).
Best dinners for lunch the next day: pad thai, homemade fried rice (I like to buy plain rice at the local Chinese place for the recipe and then re-pack it in the containers for lunch), roast chicken and potatoes/carrots, and couscous.
Otherwise, I love sandwiches too -- on good deli rolls or bread, fresh avocado, tuna or turkey, dijon mustard, spinach, etc.
Big salads are easy to put together, and filling -- spinach, romaine, tomatoes, garbanzo or black beans, hard-boiled egg, broccoli, frozen corn (by lunchtime, it's thawed!), and even some chicken from the night before.
Another eeeeasy dish that has at least a few days worth of lunches is a cold pasta salad -- bowtie or tri-color rotini, plum tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, corn, green squash, italian dressing to coat, then doctored for lunch with a little fresh parmesan and tomato on top.
Or rainy days when I wake up late, like today, with a can of soup, apple, and a yogurt! Still cheaper than take out!

My boyfriend and I are trying, since the beginning of this year, to bring lunch as often as possible. He could eat the same thing every single day with no problem, whereas I get depressed over turkey sandwiches two days in a row. But we've done pretty well recently roasting a chicken at the beginning of the week and parsing it out over a few days' lunches and dinners.
I made chicken Banh Mi sandwiches on hefty rolls that came out very good, and pasta salad was good for a few days. My favorite though, was yesterday: we met in the food court of the mall (too cold for the park!) and sat down to share a salad. The guys sitting next to us kept looking at it and making comments about how good it looked. "Where'd you get that?" they asked. I told them I made it and they offered to buy it. HA!

I'm going to share what I'm packing for tomorrow:
Christmas lima beans with cambanzola and roasted vegetables (pumpkin, leek, and endive). I might toss in some parsley and muscat orange vinegar, too.

i pack lunch and snacks on most days. i use ziplock bags and ziplock reusable plastic containers yesterday's lunch was a container of raw carrots, cut up raw rutabaga, and jicama, a container of roasted brussels sprouts from the night before, a container of pomegranate seeds, a satsuma orange, and a roast chicken sandwich on homemade challah. if i'm going to be out all day, i'll also bring some walnuts and some dried fruit.

My husband always brings the leftovers from dinner the night before. I usually just snack throughout the day, the same thing every day: 2 servings of Kashi GoLean cereal, one serving of seasonal fruit, baby carrots, and a Stonyfield Farms 2-a-day yogurt.

I usually only bring lunch when I feel guilty about how badly I've been eating. I brought lunch today. 2 Apples, a hunk of cabot cheddar, a whole-wheat sandwich with peanutbutter and banana. Pretty tasty.

I bring my lunch pretty much daily. I too enjoy leftovers from dinner, and I often make a pot of soup or chili on a weekend day to take for the week. I sometimes make a big bean salad (i.e. chickpeas and lentils with veggies and a bit of feta and a vinaigrette) to take for the week. In addition to my main dish, I will bring plain yogurt with fruit mixed in (usually frozen berries-they start to thaw by lunchtime) and then some veggies (i.e.baby carrots, sliced cucumber, grape tomatoes etc). Later in the day I'll eat some almonds. If I have baked on the weekend, a muffin or cookie might sneak in there too!

I bring my lunch at least a couple days a week. It ranges from leftovers to bento attempts to days like today, when I opt for a bit of nostalgia with grade school PBJ, carrot sticks, and individual-serving applesauce.
(There are some ideas here that look great, though -- I think I'll try some of them!)

please don't laugh- I made oatmeal cookies and they have been "BREAKFAST" at work ...all week long. I have convinced myself they are just as "good" for me as muffins.

Everyone had lots of great ideas of what they bring. I really like dinner leftovers. Like an artichoke and hummus to dip it in, since it's great cold. I also really like grain, pasta or rice salads. That is a whole meal with a piece of fruit on the side. So, I'll make up an extra big batch for dinner and then make sure I can take it the next day. Varying sandwich ingredients can really help. Different types of cheeses, pb&j, different types of breads, spreads, veggies are all great. You could have a sandwich every day of the week and not eat the same thing. I've always been big on bringing a lunch. You always know what's in your food, you save a ton of money, and your lunch break is that much longer since you didn't have to stand in line for it. Just takes a little planning the night before.

i brown bag it 90% of the time.
options include:
tuna salad or tuna sandwich
some other kind of sandwich
dinner leftovers
can of soup from the pantry
fruit/veggies/pretzel sticks/other snacks
we usually make more dinner than we need, just so i'll have lunch for a day or two afterwards. i just can't bring myself to spend $5-$10 per day on average quality restarant food.

I've always brought my lunch to work. I don't know how people can afford to go out every day. I usually have leftovers (moo goo gai pan today-nothing like leftover chinese) or a sandwich and round it out with yogurt and fruit. I pack everything the night before and while I get tired of the routine, I remember how much it costs to go out and dig a little harder into the fridge.

I usually do steamed vegetables (brussel sprouts, or medley of carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower) or salad (mixed greens or broccoli/cabbage slaw as the base, with alfalfa or radish sprouts, grape tomatoes, bell peppers, onion, radishes, and cucumbers), hard boiled eggs or water-packed tuna, and some extra veggies for dipping with hummus. If I want something sweet, I'll pack a Fuji apple, clementine, or a piece of organic dark chocolate.
I'm trying to eat healthier but I sure miss those lunch-time burritos.

I'm not disciplined enough to prepare a lunch ahead of time. So I end up taking one lunch break about every 1-2 weeks to go "supply shopping" for all the groceries I need to make my lunch at work. My most frequent fallback is kindergarten-style apples and peanut butter.
And (when I remember) I'll bring a Tupperware container full of leftovers.

There is so much great food out there, and every day is an adventure! So, it's difficult to have discipline to brown bag it. I'll bring leftovers if I have something good, but usually, I head out to hunt for thai, sushi or pizza.

I bring food from home 90% of the time, of which the majority are dinner leftovers - homemade or restaurant. If we have no leftovers, I usually go with easily prepared foods like yaki soba and pad thai. Bun thit nuong, beef stew, chili, and curry hold up well sitting in my office, since people steal food out of our work fridge. >
Oh, and my lunch is carried in a plastic grocery bag that I typically reuse until the end of the week, after which it is used as a bathroom rubbish liner.

I don't currently work, but I do make my other halfs lunches. When I do go out to work, I'd do exactly the same for me. I usually wrap them in a bit of clear wrap and he takes them to work in his laptop bag.
I make whole wheat flour tortillas (from scratch), fill them with salad and a variety of fillings including feta cheese and walnut, houmous, proscuitto, imported italian salami, canadian bacon, chilli and garlic prawns etc. And on other days, he takes a plastic bowl (tupperware variety) with him with home made soup and home made bread rolls.

One of my favorite lunch salads is tabouleh: it's fresh, filling and low in fat and calories. I'll usually pair it with some prosciutto and whole wheat crackers, fresh cheese or some baked chicken. The only drawback is that my whole offie is often filled with the smell of green onions. I love 'em in my tabouleh, but they're kinda unprofessional!

My options were leftovers from dinner (usually needed a microwave to reheat), turkey, ham, tuna or egg salad sandwiches, delivery (I wasn't allowed to leave the site), or salad which needed some of the above to hold me until dinner. Truthfully, it was usually a tavern ham and swiss cheese sandwich on pumpernickel bread. Forgot to add, I worked in a sample home (selling new homes) and I was also not permitted to have foods with odors, so some items had to stay in my car and I had to eat them outside with the door open to hear the phone and a place to stash if anyone came.

I typically grab snacks throughout the day since I don't usually get an hour free at work. On the rotation have been...
- greek yogurt with a touch of honey
- baby carrots/celery
- fuji apples
- string cheese
- clementines
I cook a medium/large batch of soup or stew at the beginning of the week, freeze 2 and then alternate with the previous week's soup for my main "meal" around noon-1pm. This week, it's chili with 2 types of beans, corn, peppers, onions, etc. Last week it was butternut squash soup with some yogurt pureed in for a bit of extra protein.
I also eat breakfast at work; I cook steel-cut oats with a bit of almond milk and dried cranberries in the crock pot over the weekend, freeze and bring to work.
the ziploc screw-top containers are a godsend. They don't leak, stack in the freezer fairly well and can stand up to the microwave.
