My roommate is "coordinating" a pot luck for NYE. She is not a foodie by any stretch of the imagination. I hope she's getting a list of proposed foods from the guests or we'll wind up with 15 Publix veggie platters.
I'm making lentil soup, a cheesecake and hummus.
PS - I love the idea of your gougeres - it's just another delivery system for cheese disguised as a crusty on the outside, moist on the inside baked treat.
is that too much cheese?
Those are swear words! No such thing!
Happy New Year to all :D

So far we've decided on:
Roasted garlic, goat cheese, caviar platter with little toasts
Homemade California Rolls
Mario Battali's Lemoncello Shrimp
Sausage Spinach Gratin
Crab Cakes (see below, I'm looking for a kick-butt recipe, anyone got one?) with a Roasted Red Pepper Sauce
Olives and other snacks pillaged from a last-minute trip to Trader Joes
And for NYD I'm making a black-eyed pea corn bread to serve with brunch.
So, can anyone recommend a really great crab cake recipe. I have a few but I was hoping to find one that was tried and true...one very crabby with little mayo and bread crumb....anyone?
Thanks!

The crab cake recipe from The Best Light Recipe definitely fits that description (and when I made it, I used about half as much mayo as they call for, and they worked perfectly! I also suggest using 1/2 teaspoon Old Bay and 1 tablespoon mustard, as they were a little too strong for me the first time I made the recipe, and 1/2 as much was perfect the second time). I also brushed the cakes with a little oil and broiled them instead of pan frying, but that's just my preference
As for my new years eve, my family has an awesome tradition of take out Chinese, so it will be a super low-maintenance holiday for us (for once)!
Lighter Crab Cakes
The amount of bread crumbs you add will depend on the crabmeat’s juiciness. Start with the smallest amount, adjust the seasonings, and then add the egg white. If the cakes won’t hold together at this point, add more bread crumbs as needed, 1 tablespoon at a time.
Serves 4
1 pound fresh crabmeat (jumbo lump), picked over to remove cartilage or shells
4 scallions , green parts only, minced (about 1/2 cup)
4 teaspoons minced fresh herbs , such as cilantro, dill, basil, or parsley leaves
1 (or 1/2) teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
2-4 tablespoons plain dried bread crumbs (see note)
1/4 ( or 2 T) cup reduced-fat mayonnaise
2 (or 1) tablespoons Dijon mustard
Salt and pepper
1 egg white
1/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 lemon , cut into wedges (for serving)
1. Gently fold the crabmeat, scallions, herbs, Old Bay, 2 tablespoons bread crumbs, mayonnaise, and mustard together in a medium bowl, being careful not to break up the lumps of crab. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Carefully fold in the egg white with a rubber spatula until the mixture just holds together, adding the remaining bread crumbs as needed.
2. Divide the crab mixture into 4 portions and shape each into a round cake, about 3 inches across and 1 1/2 inches high. Arrange on a baking sheet lined with waxed or parchment paper. Cover with plastic wrap and chill at least 30 minutes. (The crab cakes can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours.)
3. Spread the flour in a shallow dish. Lightly dredge the crab cakes in the flour and shake off the excess. Heat the oil in a 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Gently lay the chilled crab cakes in the skillet and cook until the outsides are crisp and browned, 4 to 5 minutes per side. Drain the crab cakes briefly on paper towels, and serve with the lemon wedges.

Here are my adaptions. Panko, dry mustard and a shot of garlic tabasco.
1 teaspoon dry mustard=1 tablespoon prepared mustard
it has more tang.
I like my crab cakes lumpy if you like them lumpy do not play with the mix too much once you add the crab. mix the wet ingredients then fold in the dry and gently fold in your crab. I use an ice cream scoop to form the cakes because its the quickest delivery method with the least amount of toying with the crab mix.

I'd like to try a cheese fondue on New Year's Eve---anyone have an exceptional recipe?
JEP at 12:53PM on 12/30/07
I traditionally make black eyed peas, stir-fried cabbage and cornbread for New Year's Day, but my husband never really cared for it. He has requested about a million pounds of boiled shrimp (we live in a shrimping town) and Kir Royales.

Thanks ChristineB & Jerzee...sounds great.
By the way, take-out Chinese (if you've got a decent place in mind) sounds like a really fun, ultra easy alternative.
Hope everyone's festivities are super duper!

Pork tenderloin on the grill along with Black eyed peas & rice, collard greens and southern cornbread.

Everyone's plans sound SO yummy... I'm a bit jealous... I only had to make one thing:
RESERVATIONS!
We ordinarily stay in, or at least make sure we're in a hotel somewhere (driving on NYE just freaks me out... too many years working in hospitals). But, this year, it's just the two of us, so we thought, "What the heck. Let's go for a relatively early dinner and get home before the drunks completely dominate the road."
So, we have an 8 pm at a fantastic seafood place about 30 minutes away. Then, we'll drop in at our neighborhood wine shop/bar and hang out with the owner and staff (who know us much too well). After the toast, it's only 1.5 miles to the safety of home!
Happy New Year, SeriousEaters!
LoCo at 1:48PM on 12/30/07
The only thing I have settled on so far is dessert for our NYE dinner. That will be a rich chocolate bread pudding, adapted from a recipe out of Joy of Cooking. We'll be drinking a nice bottle of Champagne we've had for years, and probably eating a wonderful steak we were given for Christmas. The rest is still coming into focus. I can't wait for that chocolate goodness, though! If anyone has tips on baking bread putting for the first time (I do plan to put it in a water bath), fire away.

I find that my crabcakes hold together better if I make the mix, form them and then lay them out on a baking sheet in the frig for a few hours before I cook them.
Cover them with plastic wrap while they are chilling and have a fair hot pan for the first side. I also use a very thin spatula for placing and turning them.

Nothing special.

Very light nibbles- will see what the produce market has to offer tomorrow.
The main event is seafood paella.

New Year's Eve: Seafood Gumbo, Jamblaya, and Grouper Fingers.
New Year's Day: Collard greens and Hoppin' John.
1stmakearoux at 8:00AM on 12/31/07
NYE:
App: Indian-accented seared shrimp
Main course: Grilled Tandoori lamb (from a local PA farm) served with a curried lentil/chard/sweet potato "stew" type side
Dessert (most likely): Scoop of vanilla topped with crushed hazelnuts, dark chocolate shavings, and a drizzle of Bailey's.
Can't wait to get those kiddies to bed tonight!
Not sure where the Indian theme came from, just sort of happened organically.
Fillippelli the Cook at 10:24AM on 12/31/07
stuffed 'shrooms- first attempt, wish me luck
coconut cake- Ina's, of course. If you haven't made it, do it soon. It is FAB.
mint brownies
chocolate chip cookie bars
Guests are bringing more non-dessert items but we're concentrating on nibbles and not a full blown meal. That's the plan unless we get the predicted 9 inches of snow forecasted to begin this afternoon (it is 11:30 EST on NYE Day and no flakes yet). Then I'll scrap everything but the coconut cake 'cuz I like it and TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY! Happy birthday to me!
A very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year to all!

This year I'm having a lot of my kid's friends spend the night. So It's going to nachos, sparkling cider and Nintendo Wii and Guitar Hero all night long.
evilchefmom at 12:26PM on 12/31/07
We are having some friends over and are having frozen appetizers :) Thanks to this website it has been on my mind since Ed posted about his fave frozen food. So yesterday my friend and I went to Safeway and basically grabbed one of everything in the frozen food section. I cannot quite remember what all we bought as it is in her freezer, but the gist is mozzarella sticks, potato skins, taquitoes, mini quiches, etc etc etc.
It should be fun, we also felt compelled to get some veggies, so that we can pretend to be slightly healthy tonight :) And to top it all off tons of Champagne.
Happy New Years Everyone :)
Sarahrm at 2:15PM on 12/31/07
Not big on New Years. Friends usually come over to watch favourite tv shows on dvd and eat junk food. Tonight will be no exception. I'm making pizzas (one with regular genoa salami, one with spicy, and one with goat cheese/artichoke hearts/sundried tomatoes). Followed up with chips and dip (real sour cream dip from the dairy my partner's dad works at), cocktails, and Hagen Dazs ice cream.
