The Whole 7 ribs. Can you get the best in Philly?
The best prime rib roast for Christmas - advice please.
Not about cooking but about buying. I'm a New Yorker recently transplanted to Center City in Philly. No butcher I've found here compares to Florence Meat Market or Ottomanelli (downtown) in NYC. Question - Ottomanelli uptown East Side will ship full 7 ribs prime for what seems like a too low price. Are they really good? Lobell's wants a fortune. Florence come in the middle pricewise and I've always loved the big roasts I've gotten there, but to ship they have to send me a 4 and a 3. What should I do and where do the many really terrific Philly restaurants buy their beef?

Gaupp and Wells are big wholesalers in the Philly market.
My brother used to work for Gaupp before the old man died so I don't know how they've changed since that.

Have you looked in the Philly Italian market? I'm sure you can find a place there that either sells them or could special order it for you for the holiday.

I thought about recommending the I market too but it seems like price is a primary concern and though the market will give you what you want more often than not a wholesaler might be a tad cheaper.
Who knows?

Don't think I can get to a wholesaler for one roast. And price is only a relative concern. Range is $200 - $400, so it's always going to be expensive.

In that area I would go to Wegman's (downingtown, cherry hill, mt laurel) they have nice meat!! Ron Tweedy's off 420, cuts good meat.
The Shop Rite on Oregon Ave in South Philly call ahead and see if they can accommodate you.

I also saw that the Allen Bros catalog has a USDA Prime 7 rib roast for $259, and although I haven't bought from them yet, their quality is supposed to be second to none, major steak houses from around the country buy from them.

Email brodman@cambridgepacking.com and ask where to but Brandt beef at retail markets in Philly. I know they ship to the city for certain restaurants, so there may be a retail source. You cannot beat it!

There are some awesome butchers and meats at the Italian Market, but I'd take the train into NYC and enjoy the shopping, shows and Christmas displays, and bring home the roast you want, where you know what you're getting. If the weather is warm (doubtful), then bring an insulated bag along.
