Kitchen/Food Gifts. Are you a me first or you first?

Is it something you'd love to have for yourself, or something you appreciate so much you wanted another to have one too?

Guess I'm a me first. I got a polder digital thermometer for a friend who is a phenomenal cook. I love mine - never need to open the oven or grill to check the progress. Also got some forschner chef knives and boos butcher blocks for several family members, 'cause I use mine everyday. How 'bout you?

i do a combination of both; i'll buy gifts that I would totally love for myself yet can't justify buying for myself. i've also given people something that i already have that i love so very much. like dean and deluca's suede potholders.

I hate buying something willy-nilly unless A. I've tried it first or B. The giftee asked for it on their wishlist. I'm a gadgets and gizmos kind of person so the more the merrier in my bloated pantry. lol

If I had to guess, I'd bet that most of us have drawers and cabinets full of gadgets and gizmos which we use all the time, and shelves of cookbooks which we treasure. We'd be great resources for novices - we know what works and what doesn't. And I'll bet we all have found additional uses for many of our gizmo watchamacallits.
