I know that this is sacreligious, but...
I admit it, I cannot stand eggnog. I know, I know. At this time of year, I am supposed to love all fo the gingery, candy caney, hot cocoaey goodness that proliferates around here, but that is the one thing that I cannot stand. Even the smell makes me queasy. So, i want to know, what do you hate at this time of year, even though you are supposed to love it? Your grandmother's fruitcake? Your aunt's sugar cookies? I don't want to feel alone in this!

I also dislike eggnog. Heartily. Sadly, I can't think of anything else that I won't eat around the holidays.

This is probably bad, but since I am "meh" about the nog, I feel it is mostly a seasonal rum delivery system. I'll drink it, but not virgin.

Try boiled custard instead. It's usually unspiced or minimally so, with a more vanilla flavor. I've made it for non-noggers, and they loved it. The cloves and/or nutmeg in the traditional nog seem to be what turn off so many.
And yes. Excellent rum (or brandy or whiskey or liqueur) delivery vehicle!

Oh. And mincemeat and fruitcake are out for me.

someone brings this mint fudge every year and I just cannot stand it. I just don't like the taste of mint extract.

I can't really think of anything I hate, but my husband cannot stand eggnog, which is a shame as it is one of my favorties.
Sarahrm at 2:23PM on 12/07/07
I will eat nearly anything served to me, but I avoid things like fruitcake, divinity candy, chalky chocolates.
As far as eggnog is concerned, I could bathe in it! When I was a very young child, I used to make it for my grandmother at her request. Wish I still had her recipe. In later years, I found out that she had a real affinity for brandy. I'll bet she spiked the nog!

I hate peppermint candy canes or anything with ginger in it. I always get a massive headache when I eat either of those two things. If anyone knows why that happens, I would love to hear from them!
evilchefmom at 3:05PM on 12/07/07
I'm not Christian but I imagine I would HATE the whole fruitcake thing!

i have never like fudge or eggnog... nasty stuff in my opinion
chlamers at 3:34PM on 12/07/07
What on earth does Christian have to do with fruitcake?
kjgibson at 3:53PM on 12/07/07
I am a vegetarian now, but even when I wasn't, I hated Blood Sausages with passion. They're called MORCILLAS in Puerto Rico and they are a holiday staple in every party. Arghhhhh!!!!
MadelynRodriguez at 4:17PM on 12/07/07
I am with you on the egg-nog. I will *maybe* put a drop in coffee just get the in-laws off my back, but I can't stand the stuff. The deride me with phrases like "you eat BRAINS for crying out loud!"... but for some reason egg-nog is not where it's at.

If you don't enjoy eggnog but would like a holiday rum drink try this:
Fill a big pasta pot with good apple cider, captain morgan's (or your favorite) spiced rum to taste, and add a homemade bouquet garni (cheese cloth works well) filled with cinnamon sticks, orange rind and cloves. Simmer on low. Serve warm in glasses rimmed with cinnamon sugar and a cinnamon stick stirrer. Not only is is delicious but the aroma will make your home smell amazing.

The slimy texture and the eggy/dairy smell of eggnog... blergh! I want to like it because of the spices and booze, but no dice.
I love mulled cider. KtMc24, your recipe sounds wonderful.
pieninja at 4:40PM on 12/07/07
I'm with you! Eggnog is gross. My father and sister go through gallons of it every Christmas, but I just can't STAND it.
kfarrel3 at 5:11PM on 12/07/07
The original fruit cake is a way to make cake with fruit after the fresh fruit season is over. Dried fruits are preserved. Dates back to before the Middle ages. Fruitcake was coined so in the Middle ages. I do not think fruitcake has a religion. But I know I don't like it.
I am not so crazy about eggnog but I love coquito whch is egg nog with cream of coconut thrown in. Now that is heaven and I recommend you try it if your turned off on the nog. People like different booze in their nog. I have had bourbon, whiskey and rum. We use rum at the house usually gold or reserve Bacardi.
I don't like chocolate covered cherries but will make them (spiked with brandy of course) if someone requests it.
Not a fudge lover but I make it. Not crazy about a lot but for people I are about if you have to have it I will make it.

Some of the more "questionable" of the 7 fishes...

I avoid anything with pumpkin in the name. I think it's the smell. But I love other hard squashes...go figure.
kathyvegas at 7:49PM on 12/07/07
I know the time has already past but during haloween I can't stand candy corn! Eggnog = gross
steakpuff at 8:07PM on 12/07/07
I'm with JerzeeTomato- can't stand eggnog, but coquito is heaven!

My family is big on raw oysters--me, not so much. I can eat one but more than that and I just don't get it!
