How to store champagne?

My husband and I received a bottle of 1998 Dom Perignon on our wedding day in September. Things have been a little busy since then, and I just realized that the bottle has just been sitting in our fridge for the past couple months. We would like to open it on our first anniversary, but I'm not sure how to store it until then. I've been told that the basement might be the best place, but can it go from the fridge to basement? I'm clearly a novice when it comes to champagne. any thoughts?

You can most certainly keep it in the fridge if it has been there for a while. Changing the temp isn't great for it - however, if you're basement is consistently cool and dry you should be ok, I guess. You should keep it upright (as opposed to non-bubbly wine) - don't remember exactly why on that. Something to do with maintaining it's fizziness.

Congratulations, by the way. The very best wishes to you and your new husband. Enjoy.

Thanks for the advice, jpolk. It sounds like keeping it in our fridge might be the best bet. Our basement is consistently cool, but (sadly) not consistently dry. I hadn't thought about that, and I didn't know about keeping it upright. Thanks!

and.........you won't forget it come your first anniversary! everytime you see it, you'll know you have something wonderful to look forward to.

congrats to you both.
