I've got some ideas, Lyndall. Where are you located? D'Artagnan sells a really good one by mail, but the shipping will be costly.

I've never had a bad Honey Baked Ham. If you don't have a store nearby they also do mail order.

best ham in the us is from nodines smokehouse yum

I'd seek out a good salty country ham. That is to say, one that has been dry-cured. If you can't find a dry-cured ham, I'd try to find one that has been smoked -- not smoke flavored -- with the least amount of added or retained moisture possible. Higher moisture content tends to mean mushy ham. Personally, I've found Honey Baked Hams (the brand) to be the mushiest, poorest quality of all, but perhaps I've been unlucky. Even so, I don't care at all for sweet-cured hams, but that's just me.

I have had honeybaked and it was not bad. Texture was a bit odd. I always buy Wegman's because it is good. I don't like Cook's brand it is way too salty. In my area if I did not go to Wegman's I would het Dietz and Watson or Hatfield both great purveyors of pork. D'Artagnan is the best stuff ever but man is that pricy. OOOOH but sooo good.

In New England there is a company called Vermont Smoke& Cure. They are affiliated with the Farmers Diner and there hams are great altough boneless. Also in New England, Strum's Deli and Meats in Holyoke Mass. has great house-cured/smoked hams.
In Chicago I would go to Paulina Meat Market.
In southern Illinois near St. Louis I would go to Korte Meats in Highland or Hart Food in O'Fallon.
Snake River Farms is a large Co-op specializing in Kobe style beef and Korabuta pork. They make a smoked ham that is awesome.
My broader suggestion would be to find a small butcher/meatmarket in your area that makes their own hams and get one of those.
Most likely all of these hams will be boneless. But they are still great and easier to slice.
If you are seeking out a southern style country ham and are in the south a good way to get an affordable and mind-blowing ham is to ask the shop if they have an extra-aged ham. It may be moldy and gross looking on the outside, but with the proper treatment a country ham that has been aged 18months plus will knock your socks off.
I'm really into ham!!!

Good information about the different
types of hams.
I LOVE their country ham

My aunt and uncle used to send us a ham from heavenly ham every year, http://www.heavenlyham.com/Corporate/index.asp
I've always liked it.

I had a whole bone-in ham from Niman Ranch last year that was out of this world. The shipping will cost you, but it was the best ham I've ever tasted, extremely tender, smoky and juicy. Everyone at the party asked how to get one like it.
