1) peppermint/candy canes
2) tangerines~always stocking stuffers when I was a child. The aroma in the air just screams Christmas to me.
3) mixed nuts~another stocking stuffer, but there was always a big bowl of them, too. Seems like we sometimes spent hours trying to get a handful of nutmeats out of those babies since we always had the ones still in the shell
4) ham baked with cloves, brown sugar, pineapples and cherries
5) banana bread
6) chocolate oranges~a new tradition I have with my own kids
7) chocolate~fudge, hot cocoa, assorted Russell Stover/Whitman's/Candy Cupboard and the handful in my stocking
8) snow cream~usually by the middle of Decemeber it was cold and snowy enough to get a bowl of fresh snow to make this with my grandmother
9) fruitcake or cranberry orange bread~ for some odd reason these two are somehow always associated together in my mind. I love them both.
10) mincemeat pie~made with my grandmother's homemade mincemeat. She always told me that this was a traditional dish to have for Christmas since the mixture was supposed to somehow represent the gifts that the kings brought to Jesus.

OMG!
I have so many December tastes that I forgot some! I forgot tortellini, pannettone, strufoli, pizzelles, marzipan, and turrone. My grandfather made the torellini by hand and the rest was usually purchased in the North End of Boston. We always had the tortellini as a soup course on Christmas.

And always on Christmas Eve - the aroma of the Feast of the Seven Fishes cooking away. Could be broiling lobsters with savory crab stuffing or a wall of garlic from any of the other dishes.
My dad used to say he had to make baccala fritters in his own house "because the stink has to be in the walls. It's not Christmas unless the stink is in the walls." Not quite how I'd phrase it but I got the message :D.
chiff0nade at 12:08PM on 12/05/07
@chiff holy cow your killing me. I have not cooked 7 fishes in a decade because of the "stink". I can remember opening up the windows when it was 20 degrees out to air out that smell. Although I have made baccala fritters since then.
We made a reservation for Christmas eve at someplace where I know the chef and the owners came over from Italy. I am baking like mad. The house smells like love and christmas here.

Coffee frappe, what's snow cream? If it's made with real snow, I'm assuming I'm oblivious due to my California upbringing!
LizNYC at 1:41PM on 12/05/07
We called it snow ice cream, and yes, it's made with fresh snow. Add milk, vanilla, stir and EAT QUICKLY.
Yes, the smell of tangerines - or clementines, as they're now marketed; I think they're slightly different, but not to my nose.
Now, January - January is the taste of grapefruit.
