Chinatown at Christmas
A friend asked about Chinatown restaurants for Christmas. She has family coming in and can’t be with them that night and is sending them for the classic NYC Jewish celebration of Xmas. She is looking for a good restaurant in Chinatown. Any suggestions would be so welcome!

I absolutely love the Peking Duck House. You can get Peking Duck anytime because it's the specialty of the house and is always being made. (No need to order 24 hours in advance.) They renovated it so I was concerned it would lose a lot of its drama but the chef still comes out and carves the duck in the dining room. And the duck...Swoonworthy.
Also love Joe's Shanghai. Famous for its soup dumplings, they have a great deal of wonderful food on the menu.
A sentimental favorite with NO - I reapeat NO atmosphere is Hop Kee. Best Crabs Cantonese and Snails Cantonese I've ever had. Also order the Noodles with Beef and Tomato to accompany. And get lots and lots of napkins.

I feel like the atmosphere @ Joe's Shanghai may be overwhelming... although I haven't been there on a xmas night, its usually packed tighter than sardines and known to sit a few groups together on 1 large table :T I'm usually a little pooped over this, but as soon as those soup dumplings come around... all thoughts on YUM! There is however a very good Malaysian restaurant near by almost venturing into little italy... wonderful price, awesome atmosphere and the food! :)

steakpuff: I think the restaurant you're talking about is Nyonya and I absolutely agree that it is wonderfully tasty - and also reasonably-priced. I've been there on several occasions with my large extended family and it's always worked out to be a tasty and positive experience. Recommendations: roti canai and the squid in house special sauce. Their noodle dishes are great, too.

Peking Duck House (ask for Phillip) or Ping's Seafood. Both would be great for the holidays and for out-of-towners.
