Brand loyalty...which products?

I have a serious loyalty to numerous products...eggs, yogurt, ice cream, peanut butter, cereal, milk & even a local chocolatier's products! Quality (and taste, of course) is the major factor in repurchasing. Are you brand loyal? Which foods & beverages? Why?

38 Comments:

Spice mixes and other items from the Alden Mill House in Alden, Michigan. These products taste a whole lot better than similar products I've tried, and I use their Miracle Blend on just about everything. Even though their spices are available in stores in this area, we still love driving up to the rather whimsical Mill House itself when we can. Photos from our last visit, and descriptions of the Pippi Longstocking style yard, are at:

JEP, this is like 250 miles north of you ... go for a drive! Oh, in the summer, of course ... ;-)

LPC---hey, I just may do that on a warmer & drier day :) The Farm Salad blend sounds like one I'd like to try---thanks!

Skippy peanut butter - it just tastes the best to me.
Marshmallow FLUFF - has to be fluff, not creme.
Bell's Stuffing Mix - it's what I grew up on, and nothing else tastes the same for making the Thanksgiving stuffing/dressing. I think it is the amount of sage in it.
Cabot White Sharp Vermont Cheddar - hmmmmmmmmm.

There are probably more, but I am drawing a blank...

Not a food, but after all that cooking: Dawn Dishwashing Liquid. To me it is the best for getitng the grease off the pans. I won't use anything else.

Chicken. Life would be so easy if I could get a decent whole chix at a supermarket. I get my chicken from Fresh Market. It's definitely costlier but it tastes like chicken and is clean and fresh.

Fage Yogurt - also more expensive than the Dannons of the world but so much more enjoyable.

hellman's mayonnaise.

land o lakes butter.

heinz catsup.

smoked fish -- must be purchased only from zabar's.

other than that i think i'm pretty open to experimentation.

I love Fresh Market because when I lived in NC they were the only place to bring in Locatelli cheese for me. I am forever thankful for that. Since I am a fan of Locatelli brand Pecorino Romano Cheese.
I am loyal to Hellman's Mayo and will use no other.
De Cecco and Delverde pasta if I can find it.
King Arthur Flour or anything quality that is locally milled.
Luzianne Tea bags for the iced tea. May not be the total tea component but is as least half.
Trader Joe's Coffees. A few different TJ's items.
Valrhona, Scharffenberger and Ghardelli chocolate (different forms for different things)
Wegman's brand of meats and poultry affordable and great quality.
The Athenos Brand of Feta cheese when I am not going to the Wegman's.
Wegman's brand for a bunch of things.
Kellogg's Rice Krispies for making marshmallow squares.
Nielsen Massey vanilla and other extracts. Penzey's spices although I do have some from A Southern Season, McCormick and Costco.
Costco butter, my freezer is full of it.
Philadelphia brand cream cheese. Auricchio cheeses.
Celestial Seasonings tea.

I'm actually a fan of trying off-brand and generic products just for vatiety. I usually find them to be as good or better than brand name offerings, and they're almost always a good value.

I just checked my cupboards and fridge for items I purchased because of either intended or subconscious brand loyalty, and I found: Crisco Shortening, Heinz Ketchup (for the G'Kids), Good Seasons Ranch Dressing (ibid), and Miracle Whip.

Brands I like, but have to order, are King Arthur and Penzeys.

SB (okay .... and Velveeta)

1. King Arthur flour

2. Ken's Steak House Lite Caeser dressing (I use it for potato salad dressing)

3. Marie Callender's Chicken Pot Pies

4. Duncan Hines Red Velvet cake mix

5. Lawry's Seasoned Salt

6. Kimlan brand soy sauce

7. Muir Glen fire roasted whole canned tomatoes

I'm not brand-conscious overall -- private label works fine for the majority of groceries I purchase. But, there definitely are a few that I'm 100% inflexible about:
* Stremick's Heritage Farm organic 1% milk w/ Omega-3
* Best Foods mayo (aka Hellman's)
* Barilla Plus pasta
* Kerrygold Irish butter (or good imported French stuff if I can find it fresh enough)
* Tillamook cheddar cheese slices for sandwiches/burgers
* C&W frozen vegetables (makes store brand look inedible)
* Philadelphia Brand cream cheese
* Imagine, Pacific Foods, and Kitchen Basics broths and stocks
* Knudsen lowfat cottage cheese
* King Arthur flour
* Simply Lemonade (when my tree doesn't have enough fruit to make it myself)
* Mellitta coffee for day-to-day use
* Smart Balance original spread (margarine)
* Progresso tomato puree
* Heinz ketchup (almost never eat it, but when I do, that's what I want)

There are a few brands I prefer, if available, but not adamant about:
* Newman's Own if they offer a particular product I need
* Diestel turkey
* Boar's Head deli meats

not really that brand conscious but i do think that overall president's choice makes many consistently tasty products.

After reading all the comments, I realize I buy many of the same brands as all of you.

JT....I'm going on a hunt for that cheese today...it must be good since you've mentioned it more than once :) And I actually have a Fresh Market here!

and...

Sriracha Hot Sauce

Many of the above - I'm a brand snob, I guess. I order my groceries online and have learned to request NO SUBSTITUTIONS. It also limits the variety of shopping in specialty shops (too expensive online), and grocery stores like Wegman's.

Must haves:
Pepperidge Farm products, or Arnold in a pinch for breads.
Claussen garlic kosher dills.
Dannon yogurt
as many organic, hormone, antibiotic free products as are available to me

I hate cheap toilet paper! haha

I think I am a brand snob too.
-Hellman's Mayonnaise
-Chabaso ciabiatta bread with olive oil
-Heinz Ketchup
-Cabot Extra Sharp Cheddar - the one with jalapeno peppers is also excellent
-Nielsen Massey vanilla extract
-Penzey's makes good spices
-Fage yogurt or Stonyfield flavored yogurt (it has less sugar than the other brands such as Yoplait)
-King Arthur unbleached flour
-Land O' Lakes or Breakstone's unsalted butter
-Filipo Berio or Cola Vita Extra Virgin Olive Oil
-E. Guittard chocolate wafers - bittersweet, semisweet, and white chocolate are wonderful
-Scharffenberger unsweetened chocolate bars
-Mariebelle Hot Chocolate
-Mariage Freres Tea

PG Tips, tea
Chock full o'Nuts, NYC coffee
Coffee Mate, coffee creamer
Cindy's Kitchen, they make the best raspberry vinaigrette
Coach Farm Goat Cheese
Kate's Homemade Miane Butter
Bell & Evan's Chicken Nuggets
Ben & Jerry's
Kashi-Anything they make is great
3400 Phinney, the best chocolate bars
Dagoba chocolate bars also good
Synder's Honey Mustard Pretzels
I could keep going but these are my favorites

Barilla Plus Pasta
Cadbury milk chocolate bars (Brit parents, grew up on it)
Vosgues
Haagen Daaz vanilla ice cream
Hellmans mayo
Greek Gods honey yogurt
Texas Bobs potato chips

KASHI! Anything makes me happy :) I like certain brands of other things as well, but Kashi is definitely the most worth noting.

Oh, and Crazy Richard's all-natural smooth peanut butter. Soooo good.

Laura Scudder's organic peanut butter!

Hellman's/Best Foods mayo (depending on what part of the country I am in and what is sold there.)
Heinz ketchup
Daisy sour cream
Smart Balance for my fake butter--not too particular about the brand of real butter, but I do like the 365 brand at Whole Foods, and it's cheap!
Domino sugar (not sure why, but I can't bring myself to buy generic sugar.)

I forgot to add Eggland's Best eggs!

Things I would rather do without than settle for a substitute:

PG Tips (tea)
Hellmann's Mayonnaise
Heinz Ketchup
Cadbury Wispa (haven't had this one in a while!)
Grolsch (beer)
Robertsons Silver Shred Marmalade

Muir Glen Fire Roasted Crushed Tomatoes

Muir Glen fire roasted tomatoes (how AWESOME ARE THEY ?!?!?!)
Hellmans Mayo
Marie's Super Blue cheese dressing
Franks Red Hot Sauce
Sticky Fingers BBQ Sauces

Heinz ketchup
Plochman's yellow mustard
I am a new convert to Fage. I don't think I will ever eat another brand of yogurt. Nothing compares to the flavor or texture, and I discovered it at Meijer a few weeks ago- yahoo!
Peter Pan peanut butter- thanks to the husband
Duncan Hines Cake mixes
Ghiradelli baking chocolates

@ JEP- can I assume the local chocolatier is DeBrand's? If not, are you willing to name your source? They are the only chocolatier I can think of in your area and their chocolates are fabulous!

I'm definitely going to try Muir Glen. I looked them up some time ago, and they are made in my state - PA - and we're not known for great tomatoes, so I never bought them.

Nellie & Joes Key West Lime juice
Tony Cachere's Creole Spice
Oregon Chai Tea
Tillamook cheddar(medium or sharp)
Goya Brand Mojo Criollo ( a must for roast pork)
Hickory Farms sweet hot mustard
Siracha Chili (the one with the white rooster- I call it cocksauce-so my boyfriend knows what to buy it the store.)
Kikkoman Soy sauce (his choice)

brand snob.
dagoba and blanxart chocolate
old chatham sheep's milk yogurt
annie's organic horseradish mustard
muir glen canned tomatoes and ketchup
mcevoy olive oil
westsoy organic soymilk
häagen dazs vanilla ice cream
cascadian farms pickles
amy's mac and cheese
california blackk whole grain bread

Ha, ha, ha... So many of us mentioned Heinz Ketchup and Hellmans/Best Foods Mayo, which just cracks me up... what does it say about us that we're all SO concerned with such mundane condiments? Too funny.

AuntJone---you are so right, DeBrand is the best chocolate :)

Not going to help most people here, but I am devoutly loyal to my local farmers and their "brands." Nothing tastes better than naturally grown/raised and local.

Nutella, Fage yogurt, Whole Foods 5-Grain sliced bread, Boar's Head turkey, a lot of stuff from Trader Joe's.

More than brands, I have specific grocery stores where I get certain things (Sahadi's for apricots and rice, TJ's and Whole Foods, C-Town for cheap stuff...the Brooklyn loop.)

@ LoCo: Mundane? MUNDANE?? HAH! How dare thou ... ;-)

BTW, for hot sauce I have to have Boneyard Brew. Oh yeah, that's some good stuff.

Okay, LPC... since we're discussing the not-so-mundane mundanities (is that a word?)... I like...

Pico Pica Mexican hot sauce for Mexican food
Tapatio Mexican hot sauce for hot dogs (mmmmmm) and bean soups
Herdez salsas, casero and verde (when I don't make my own)
Boar's Head horseradish
Bonne Maman jams and preserves (sugar, not corn syrup! yay!)
And an excellent BBQ sauce (again, sugar, no corn syrup) -- the name escapes me, because I buy it by visual ID.. will post it when I remember.

Crazy Richards PB, Fage (though I'll get other brands if their cheaper). Silk soy milk. For cereal: Nature's Path, Barbara's, Alpen.

Brandt beef
Alison's Farms chicken
Beeler precooked bacon
Vermont Smoke & Cure bacon and ham
Loch Duart salmon
Spence smoked salmon
Applegate Farms sandwich meats
La Quercia prosciutto and speck
Pearl Kountry Klub franks
Mosner's Alpine Valley veal
Snake River or Niman's pork
Tito's medium salsa
Kikoman low-sodium soy sauce
Eden (Aji No Haha) mirin
Grey Poupon dijon mustard

and of course Heinz ketchup and Hellman's mayo.
