Roasted chili strips, sauteed red onion, bacon and cheddar. Let's make sure that bun is grilled.

bacon, mayo, and alfalfa sprouts...cheese would have to be pepper jack. might substitute fresh guacamole for the sprouts

I wouldn't even get so fancy.
Give me a (or two) Clamp's (Marbledale/New Milford, CT) burger(s) with ketchup, salt and pepper, and fried onions and I'll be happy for life.

I'm so picky about burgers and sandwiches....I kind of hate most condiments. I would only eat ketchup, mustard and smoked cheddar cheese.
elderberry44 at 2:37PM on 11/28/07
onion rings, bbq sauce and cheddar
hammondcheese at 2:41PM on 11/28/07

mayo, a dab of ketchup, white onion, truffle oil, american cheese, buttered and toasted bun. (sorry, that's four, but come on, ketchup and mayo should only count as one)
seyo at 3:19PM on 11/28/07
truffle oil and American cheese? I'll have to trust you on that combo!....I like them both in their place though...so maybe...

avocado, bacon, spring greens, and gruyere. Definitely on a toasted ciabatta or foccacia roll

This is a difficult question, I was recently visiting a friwnd of mine who had a 6 year old daughter. When dinner time came, she made angel hair pasta with home made marinara and served a perfectly cooked hamburger (plain no bun/toppings). At first glance, I thought this was odd but as I wrapped my past around the cut pieces of hamburger I really enjoyed every bite and the accompanying sprite ( I usually do not drink regular soda) brought were true comfort food. I have digressed, my apologies, if I had to choose only three toppings: the freshest summer beefsteak tomato slices, thick slices of red onion and russian dressing (fresh baked kaiser roll and muenster cheese).

truffle oil is the secret weapon for amazing burgers, so yeah, trust me and try it. i put it in the ground meat mix before cooking. its awesome. and i dont buy crappy american cheese, i buy the deli sliced kind, from a decent brand like land o lakes, or if i can find it, from horizon or cabot.
seyo at 4:38PM on 11/28/07
Oooooh.
This one is tough.
1) Bacon, guacamole, mushrooms and Swiss.
2) Cheddar, ketchonnaise, red onion and tomato.
3) Maytag bleu cheese, sauteed onions and mushrooms in a red wine reduction.
Grill the bun.

Okay. I am a bona fide hamburger addict. I am obsessed with them, but I try to limit myself to once a month. We travel all over the world, and no matter where we go, we ALWAYS try at least one hamburger. Even when we know it's a really bad idea. Like in England (can you say mad cow?). Or Russia (was that even beef?). I'm perpetually seeking the best burger on earth.
Anyway. Although I will take them in a variety of ways, my favorite is, and always will be, the super traditional model. Which cannot be made with only THREE toppings!!!! What the heck???? (lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickle, mustard, mayo -- that's six -- plus cheddar) Humph.
So, if I can only have THREE!!!! then I guess it'll be avocado, red onion, tomato, and cheddar, havarti, pepper jack, or similar.
I also do grilled mushrooms and onions, a touch of mayo, swiss cheese.
Chili (no beans), red onions, mustard and cheddar can be acceptable, but I'd really MUCH rather add dill pickle slices and tomato to that one, too!
And make mine MEDIUM, please.

Carmelized onions, roasted red peppers, goat cheese. Thinking about this is making me hungry :P
Jj6407 at 7:48PM on 11/28/07
If I don't want the cheese, can I have four toppings? Ketchup, mayo, lettuce, and tomato. YOM.
Christina at 11:40PM on 11/28/07
First of all, it has to be a TURKEY burger. Yum! Then, add either swiss, mozzarella, or provolone. Toast the bun just a bit. NO ketchup, definitely NO MAYO! Tomatoes, onions (caramelized are best), and pepper (the spice). That really makes my mouth water, and honestly--I'm not even a huge burger person to begin with!
luswim06 at 11:52PM on 11/28/07
Believe it or not...I like my burgers with just ketchup!! Or, maybe cheese and ketchup :)
If I had to pick..I'd go mushrooms and blue cheese, but really I'm just plain Jane, as usual.
