Which vegetable do you refuse to eat?

Okay...we are all grown-ups here, but we can refuse to eat vegetables we don't like :) I refuse to eat peas! Which vegetable do you avoid?

45 Comments:

Lima beans. Other than that, I love my vegetables.

Okra. Yuk. I love everything else.

Lima beans & turnip!

Raw tomatoes.

I love most veggies, but after all these years I still refuse to eat cooked spinach. I love baby spinach on salads, but there's just something about the cooked slimy-looking green mush that I cannot handle...

Turnip greens. I'm a Southerner, born and raised, but I can't take 'em. Strangely, I do like cooked spinach.

Cooked turnip - it's lovely raw tho!

Kale, okra, turnips and beets!!

Turnips and radishes - awful! But I love kale, beets, spinach in all forms, broccoli, Brussels sprouts....

lima beans. uck that mealy pasty texture just thinking about it gives me the shivers

Beets. They are not only the only vegetable I refuse to eat, they are the only ANYTHING I refuse to eat (okay, not too crazy about freshwater fish unless it's smoked).

I couldn't think of anything until I read the words "cooked spinach."
I like cooked spinach in other dishes, but by itself, it is just a big, green glop of wrong.

I love pretty much all vegetables except okra and raw green peppers.

Lima beans. Bitter melon, because well, it's bitter. Does that count? People cook it like it's a vegetable.

I'll eat anything that doesn't burn my lips, tongue, mouth tissue, throat - like hot peppers.

Cooked okra-can't stand the slimy texture. I don't like radishes either. I like the first bite of brussels sprouts and then I can't finish it.

Lima beans, brussel sprouts and turnip.

I don't like brussels sprouts, though I will try one now and then in case my tastes have changed.

Either I am allergic or have strong sensitivity to eggplant; I've never swallowed any, but my dad is allergic and when I took a bite it burned, so no thank you.

There are plenty of vegetables I prefer over others. :-)

Cauliflower. I won't outright refuse to eat it (there's very little in that category), but I definitely don't seek it out - raw, cooked or otherwise..

It smells like feet.

Stewed okra are off my list but I could eat my own weight in the fried stuff. I've never been a fan of brussels sprouts but they have been lauded so widely of late on these sites that I decided to try again. Did the research and picked a delightful looking recipe. No deal; I still don't care for the little globes...

Frozen lima beans are one of the only foods I refuse to eat.

Cooked carrots. Raw carrots are great. Cooked carrots make me gag. Matter of fact, just tossed the leftovers from T-day.

Just about every single seaweed.. Yech. I can deal with Kombu to make dashi, but that's about it.

And Kale. I really hate kale.

I'm borrowing from other lists - Brussels sprouts, eggplant, lima beans, cooked carrots and beets. But I really am not a picky eater. : )

Okra, not only the texture but the gym-sock, dirty sponge taste as well.
And raw tomatoes...I've dealt with them before with a liberal dousing with sugar (a not uncommon snack in Beijing during summer, it seems), but in most other guises, I can't stand them.

I have never met a single vegetable I didn't like.

Thinking of categories in terms of the way we serve produce vs. the way botanists classify plants--e.g. tomatoes, eggplant and mushrooms as vegetables--I am more prone to dislike fruit since some can be repulsively viscous or sicky sweet.

Hated beets as a kid, but only because it was a time when canned vegetables were popular and frozen ones, classy. Love roasted ones now. Fond of their greens.

I could die happy without eating any more unripe bell peppers--I much prefer them yellow, orange or red. Yet I go for the strong bitterness of green peppers when they're soft and stuffed.

I used to feel the same way about green beans. Ho hum if not loathsome. But a local farmer grows a variety called Jade that is amazingly flavorful--and there is something magical that happens to tiny green beans when Tuscans braise forever in strong olive oil. Better in salads at room temperature than warm, for the most part.

Raw tomatoes. Yes, really. I've tried 'em here in NJ in August. I've had heirlooms. I JUST DON'T LIKE THEM. More for you, I say! I live everything made with tomatoes (except juice), but not raw ones.

Oh, and olives. Bleah.

okra. eeeeeeeeew!!!

green bell peppers.

cooked carrots.

raw bell peppers, raw spinach, raw cabbage (coleslaw...yuck)

Peppers and turnip greens.

beets, cabbage, okra, cauliflower, turnips and cooked spinach (I eat it fresh almost every day, though).

Celery: I can't handle the taste or smell of it. But I love all other vegetables.

bitter melon/bitter gourd. it's considered a delicacy in andhra cooking -- unfortunately, i can't stand it!

beets (in any form) and cooked carrots

asparagus. it does something odd to my system.

How could I have forgotten about my dislike for onions, both raw & cooked!

Beets taste like a mouthful of dirt. Awful stuff ... unless you like eating dirt. I believe I was only able to eat beets without gagging at WD-50. Just that one time.

In distant second (third, fourth ...) are kale, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts. I'm still not entirely convinced that I will never like these vegetables, but all signs support that conclusion.

There are others that I tend to avoid, but have had if well prepared, including spinach and peas, which are generally lousy tasting vegetables.

I've been racking my brain and honestly can't think of any vegetables I won't eat. I just love them! At least, I love the ones I've eaten so far. That said, there are certain preparations that are icky.

Okra -- agree that it's wonderful fried (of course, I always say you can eat ANYTHING breaded and deep fried). In soup, if added at the last minute so it stays crisp, it's good. Boiled? No way, Jose. Never could figure out who on earth could eat something that slimy. Reminds me of... oh, nevermind.

Spinach -- lightly cooked is fantastic, one of my faves. Raw is acceptable. You can keep the canned stuff, though. Completely inedible.

Cauliflower -- the less cooked the better. Raw is best for me.

Cucumbers are tasty, but they don't like me very much, so I avoid them. Same with canteloupe and raw green bell peppers.

Hubby dislikes water chestnuts, as do many other people I know.

Can't get enough of your topics.

It's funny, recently my 26 year old brother and I rehashed his hatred for asparagus...he still won't touch it but I love the stuff.

I'm not sure if onions are vegetables...but I just hate onions (though I admit I'll eat them sometimes...my brother on the other hand will not go near asparagus).
