What's your favorite type of holiday gathering?

Cookie exchanges, appetizers & wine, house-to-house celebration, gathering to sing Christmas carols & drink hot chocolate? On the flip side, what type of holiday gathering do you least enjoy? I prefer a casual get together with friends or family...cookies & cocoa. Every year, I dread the carry-in & gift exchange at work :( What's your favorite? Which event do you dread?

I enjoy having our neighbors come over for hor d'oerves and drinks. It's casual and everyone has a good time. We play games, and if it's warm enough we can sit outside by the lake and watch the fireworks, which are usually displayed on every holiday.

My least favorite was when I had to attend stuffy cocktail parties for work.

I love it when people can get somewhat dressed up but not white tie and tails by any means. I like Hors D'Oeuvres that come out hot all night in no particular order - plus a couple of trays of hot food offered for more "substantial" fare. Let's face it - during the holidays, not many people count calories so it's a good time of year for a cook to shine.

I offer an array of sweets afterward and hot cider during (to which people may add rum or brandy if they like).

I love the potluck where I part-time. I've always loved them, no matter what the setting. Not necessarily fancy (or even good) food, but interesting. Dislike: high-end charity functions where the unstated purpose is to show off clothes, connections, and decor.

I love all holiday gatherings except my husband's work Christmas party. He hates his job and attendance at both the summer picnic and holiday party is way down so it isn't any fun. He doesn't want to go but since he's in a management position feels he has to. I wish my attendance was optional!

I love any kind of Christmas get together. But I especially love the holiday Black and White party that i have every New Years. Everyone has to wear either black or white, its a formal occasion.

And I hate any work party that my mom drags me to. She works at a bank and everyone is so square and buttoned up. So unlike me ; )

Christmas at my house (I know big shocker) we do a sit down dinner and fire is roaring the eggnog is flowing and people are eating what I made.
We do not do formal anymore. It is come as you are comfortable and I am pleased to say no one has ever showed up looking ratty yet. I did say yet.

Me, alone with a cup of coffee, gathering my thoughts.

SB (not very festive)

ohmygosh, I love all of them!! Except a stupid gift exchange with co-workers, I'm with you JEP. Last year I was the new girl and the guy who got me thought I was someone else and I got an entirely inappropriate gift. I'll surely get the new guy this year.

I enjoy office holiday parties at restaurants! :) It's just fun to socialize with people you don't ordinarily socialize with. I also enjoy cozy holiday gatherings at home with family...either one!

Me and my girlfriends from High School just got together at a local winery. You bring your own apps and desserts and buy the wine by the bottle. It was great to sit by the fireplace and catch up. It was like our own reunion with out the people we really don't care to see. I'm going to do it with my family soon because it was so great.
