What salad will you serve on Thanksgiving?

With the turkey & dressing, multi-sides, other nibbles & dessert...does salad find itself on your menu? Never liked those gelatin concoctions that were traditional in my growing-up years :( When I do plan a Thanksgiving dinner, I include a fruit salad containing pears, apples, grapes, nuts ,etc. Are you serving a salad this year?

Oh yes. I make a fennel and orange salad that goes beautifully with turkey dinner. It acts almost like a palate cleanser, and is really refreshing as well as delicious.

baby greens, sweet/spicy pecans, creamy gorgonzola, home made gala apple chips and a handful of craisins with an apple cider viniagrette!

The closest we get to salad at Thanksgiving dinner is cranberry sauce.

I do not serve a salad so to speak. I do an antipasto. A caprese buffalo mozzarella plate, cold aparagus, some sliced italian salami, pepperoni, prosciutto, sharp provolone, olives. I put out some nice cibatta bread with it and they pick on it while we get the meal together.

I wish we weren't serving salad at Thanksgiving. Salad is consistently the responsibility of my part of the family, and it never gets eaten. We always have such an overabundance of food that a basic green salad with French vinaigrette just doesn't do much for anyone. Maybe this year I'll bring an apple-cranberry pie and call it salad.

To be honest, any time I have ever made a green salad on T-Giving it has never gotten eaten. I think it's just the warm comfort of all those dishes emerging from the oven, bubbling and crisp that distracts everyone from cold greens.

oops, I do serve a relish tray with the dinner. Does that count as a "salad"?

I made my own version of a salad I ate at Country - mixed greens with beets, goat cheese and toasted hazelnuts. It's my absolute favorite in general, but a great, refreshing, yet sophisticated seasonal salad. I think I'll be taking that to Thanksgiving this year.

Nope, the few years I have done a salad, it always gets wasted. Our family does a vegetable/shrimp platter.

no salad. it's all about the warm comforting food!

salad can be yummy and comforting. but theres so much leftover turkey (destined for 3 weeks worth of salads) that there's no point salad-ing on T-day itself

To me salad always seems like one of those things you have to make just to sit on the table and for everyone to ignore, but if you don't make it, everyone notices.

Coleslaw. It's a long-standing tradition in my family. For many years, my mom made one that contained mini marshmallows and crushed pineapple. Bleck. Still makes me shudder just thinking about it. Then, 30 or so years ago, she got the recipe for the awesome coleslaw served at The Original Pantry Cafe in Los Angeles. It's very light and simple -- whoever is hosting must have it on the table.

7-layer salad has been a tradition in my family for as long as I remember, so I have to make it! Everyone loves it and it's always a hit.
The layers are in order top to bottom arranged in a trifle bowl, or any other pretty glass bowl-


mayo mixed with parmesan cheese
frozen peas
bacon pieces
cauliflower florets
shredded cheddar cheese
chopped red onion
lettuce

I can't wait to make it again this year!


As others have said: no salad because it never gets eaten. We have a first course of soup because it is celebratory and ceremonial. We have had cauliflower, wild mushroom, carrot/parsnip and in the dinosaur days, consomme celestine! It gets everyone settled down and focused.

The fennel and orange salad sounds perfect.
