NYC - To eat at a food cart or not to eat, that is the question.

1. Do you eat at the food carts that dot NYC streets? If so, what do you like and what do you avoid?

2. I would also love to know where to get a really good hot dog.

My office is on 46th St and 6th Ave and I grab lunch at Moishe's Falafel several times a month. Hotdogs are on my "avoid list" so I can't make any recomendations, but you can probably find some leads here.

i'm occasionally tempted to eat at one of the halal shish carts near my union square office, but whenever i succumb, i'm usually sorry. the food is like salt with a little meat in it.

in the winter, i love to get roasted chestnuts from a vendor across the street from the MOMA. they're always better than the ones i can do at home.

When I am in NYC I will tend to grab a dog or something from a vendor. Which I also do in my home city of Minneapolis. I'm curious why the question? Safety? Street food in any city tends to be safer, cheaper and many times better than food in your average restaurant that serves the same thing. I don't think twice about it.

My husband swears by Sabrett's Hot Dogs. There are stands all over the city just look for the brand name on their umbrella. I agree with the poster above that we don't generally think twice before eating dogs from a vendor - we consider it a big city tradition.

To eat, of course. I eat about anything I find except pretzels. I tried a couple last summer and they were stale each time. I love a vendor's egg 'n cheese sandwich in the morning (near Columbus Circle).

I am all about eating at the carts, but my partner and my other traveling companions are likely to say nix to it all because they are "afraid" it won't be safe - sigh.

I think it is fun to try street food - but usually, I am in cities with a few venders, not a bunch like NYC. That is why I asked the question.

I love the idea of chestnuts at the MOMA - they aren't ever quite right at home.

kababs sound good, as does the hallo berlin cart...falafel - yum. so much food and so little time :)

when i visited NYC in the summer, i think alot of my meals were from street vendors. it's nice to just grab something quick and sit outside.

There are great spring rolls in Chinatown you can get from a vendor that also serves noodles and chicken.

If you want really good vendor food, go to the Red Hook ballfields (not during the winter) for the Mexican/Central American food.

There's nothing to be afraid of with streetfood. Just make sure it is fresh. Look for a popular one too. Go at peak hours. Trust me, I've never been sick from it.

i'm a big street meat fan, but i do avoid the generic chicken and rice carts. there are only a couple that i go to, but they are pretty awesome.

I grew up eating Sabrett hot dogs almost daily, from a cart on Rogers Ave, in Brooklyn. I've only ever been food-poisoned in so-called real restaurants, always via either mussels or oysters. Bring on the hot dogs, let sauerkraut be unconfined (don't remember whom I'm paraphrasing here, sorry)!

Second the votes for Hallo Berlin and Moishe's..Definitely go where the lines are.

Street vendors caught some bad publicity from having raw chicken left out too long or not cooked to temperature,it made them all look bad which of course came from big fancy restaurants pushing for the vendors to get out of certain areas.
As far as hot dogs are concerned sabrett is the best if you see a grays papaya they are a great place to get a couple of dogs as well.
