How large is your group. And how old are you all. And have you considered the lovely borough of Brooklyn?

Thanks for the recommendations, ceforrester! I've only heard of 'ino -- will check the rest out!
charm city cupcake , we're 26-30 age range. Expecting a group of about 10-15. I adore Brooklyn, but my friend's the one planning the soiree and I know she wants to be in Manhattan -- easier for everyone to gather together, etc. 'Can't wait to hear your suggestions!

Here's my suggestion: Klong.
I was recently there for my bday with 10 people. (I turned 28 in mid-September, so I'm in your age range.) The food is awesome (get the pumpkin curry), the cocktails are strong (get the Man Martini. I'm not kidding. It's a real drink there.). The atmosphere is youngish and cool but annoyingly trendy; the odd old couple and NYU couple make the place great because they confirm that it's not scene-y.
Just make sure that you reserve in advance and DO NOT show up late - make sure everyone in your party is there on time. They are a popular spot and they WILL give your table away if you're late! (I learned that lesson the hard way!)
'ino is WAY too small for a party of 10-15 to have a good time. maybe ceforrester meant 'inoteca on the LES? if so...
'inoteca on the LES is great, but it's not a good bday dinner place. I think it's lovely for a date, but it's so not the spot for a group birthday dinner. It's too small for a big table to be comfortable in there save for the big corner banquette, but, believe me, they won't seat a table of 12 in the corner bench/banquette unless they know you have lots of cash to drop (believe me on this one, my ex-boyfriend was the sommelier at 'inoteca so I know their seating practices/policies.) Maybe you have lots of cash to drop, but, unless you let the owner JD know this in advance, you're not getting that banquette.
You may not like this one, but I think that Festival Mexicano on Rivington is a great place to go with friends. It's low-key and delicious and leaves you with that much more money for booze elsewhere. If you go there, make sure that you go to El Sombrero afterwards for a to-go marg while you search for a place to park yourselves after dinner.
I have so many more suggestions, but I don't think I should go on and on and on...feel free to email me if you want - my email is on my food blog's sidebar.

I hate that I can't edit posts; I meant to say that Klong is NOT annoyingly trendy!!!!

I had a birthday party for 10 people at il Buco on Bond St.. The atmosphere is taverna-like, the food is really good, and if you can reserve the wine cellar downstairs, it is awesome. Upstairs, it will be noisier, but spirited. Check it out !

Come to Brooklyn. Go to Alma for the view from the roof.

inoteca actually has a private room downstairs for larger groups. not sure what the minimum size requirement is. i agree you might want something a little more lively. there so many good spots. are you looking for a specific food or area of the city? budget?

La Palapa on St. Mark's Place is great for groups, and who doesn't love Mexican food?

You could go with the room downstairs at Blue Ribbon Bakery

Bread Bar.
I can't think of a better way to try a lot of that wonderful menu in one shot! You'll also find creative cocktails, and in general, a wildly affordable menu. If you're game to spend more, go upstairs to Tabla. Either way, you can't go wrong there!

We had my daughter's 21st birthday party at Primitivo Osteria. They have a smallish private room in the back. Food is great and prices are moderate. They have a prix fixe dinner in addition to the menu Sunday thru Thursday. We've been back with friends and family several times since. Donna
