In the kitchen, what's your least favorite sound to hear?

I'm somewhat annoyed by the dishwasher & blender noises as well as the phone ringing. The sound of glass shattering or exploding tells me I will soon be cleaning up a mess! On the other hand, love hearing the toaster pop-up & the timer buzzing which tells me "time to eat". Kitchen noises, what do you like & dislike?

A grinding sound in the disposal or the smoke detector.

Least favorite: loud mechanical noises - blenders, food processors, mixers.

Favorites are too many to list, but I have include the rhythmic "thwup-thwup-thwup" sound of chopping on a board or the low gurgle of something sitting at a nice early boil. Oh, and that hiss pouring liquid into a hot pan to deglaze. I could go on like this for an hour.

I hate the smoke detector. It scares me every time.

I think my favorite is the rumbly noise of something rapidly simmering/boiling.

(Or, "oops", or any variation.)

The silence of my finger being lacerated to the bone with an errant stroke of my chef's knife.

Definitely the smoke alarm is irritating, have gotten in the habit of just 'turning if off'. I guess it is time to clean the oven.

Also anything breaking.

After that nothing else bothers me, love all the sounds in a kitchen.

Blender noises are definitely annoying, but I think the worst is pots and pans clamoring in the cabinet or if they fall to the floor....LOUD and startling!

Chew on That

The loud piercing sound of a black labrador retriever yiping in pain because I stepped on its paw as it sneaked up behind me to grab something that fell on the floor.

Just the other day I had a small ceramic dipping dish fall through a gap in the dishwasher rack and shattered. I knew it was coming, and cringed before it even hit the travertine.

Of course, that was followed by a bunch of other unsuitable-for-publication unpleasant coming from my mouth.

The sound of something boiling over is always unpleasant, especially if it's something really hard to clean up, like milk.

Of course, that also is followed by those previously mentioned unpleasant sounds emitting from my mouth...

I also dislike the sound of blenders, mixers, food processors, etc., but I endure them by thinking of their yummy payoffs.

Usually its, "OH NO MOMMY!!!"

i'd have to say it's the all too frequent sound of my highly breakable plates, bowls, and glasses contacting the marble kitchen counters and floors at high speed.

or the voice of a guest informing me that he or she doesn't eat what i've just spent hours preparing.

Least favorite: The sound of the disposal attempting to grind a non-food substance. Like a measuring spoon. Or the dish cloth.

Most favorite: something sizzling or simmering on the stove; the clink and clank of my dishes and cookware as someone else washes them... :)

Coffee-grinder. Not only does it disturb my sleep, hearing someone already up and grinding coffee for their morning cuppa while I'm abed makes me feel like a world-class slug.

Dishes banging against each other as I hastily empty the dishwasher 6 plates at a time.

Smoke detector for me. I live in a small apartment with no ventilation to speak of, so even searing a steak can set off the alarm. We are on constant alert in our kitchen. That piercing sound drives me nuts.

My smoke detector never goes off...I wonder if it really works---ha! I rather enjoy the sound of my mixer as this usually means I am in the process of baking something yummy :)

I live in Florida where some genius thought it was a good idea to put white tile in every #*#^@ kitchen. When you drop something fragile, you say goodbye to it halfway to the floor. The crash is deafening.

Smoke alarm definitely ranks up there.

I don't hear this in my kitchen because I would never do such a thing but the sound of someone using a defenseless knife on a glass cutting board. OMG, that's knife abuse.

the sound of another human voice...i cook alone and don't want any help or ideas. NOW GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN.

I'm not a dish-breaker, so that sound is rare. Fingers crossed since I have now "bragged".

I do dislike the sound of a pot boiling over into burner. I know it's a mess to clean up. And....the smoke alarm when I sear at high heat for too long.

The sound of my toilet, on the second floor, breaking through the very old and probably rotted flooring and landing in my kitchen.

It takes a brave woman to live in a house mid-renovation.

BTW, if this ever happens, you'll read about it first in my blog, http://www.annienewman.typepad.com also known as Annie's New York Eats.
