Food Network Chefs
With all this talk about Emeril leaving, people have been complaining that so many FN hosts are not actually great chefs. While I believe this is true, there are still a few that I like. Who is or was your favorite?
I have always liked Giada. She is talented in my opinion (unlike Sandra Lee), and her personality is not too much (like Emeril or Rachael). Plus, I love Italian cooking. She's best on her original "Everyday Italian" series versus her "Weekend Getaways".

I find I like what Giada makes but I find her annoying. So I own her cookbooks but don't watch the show. Alton is the only person I watch on the network anymore.
(one morbid note: if you look for Giada's family dinners cookbook on amazon.com it recommends purchasing Giada's book with Rachel Rays 30 second meals)

I miss the old guard. When Marcel Desaulniers, Flo Braker, Wayne Harley Brachman, Alice Medrich, Nick Malgieri and a host of baking people would make their recipes and teach me good stuff. Also the Melting Pot episodes with New Iron Chef Michael Symon and the different ethnic origins.
There were always guest chefs hosting.
Those first 3 or 4 years I was a rapt audience. I even used to set the VCR if I was going to miss something.
There are few on FoodTV I care for. Bobby Flay is innovative and I dig him when he really cooks. Tyler Florence provides the comedy at How to Boil Water and he bakes on some of his shows. I was one of the original fans of AB and will stay an AB fan forever. Ina Garten reminds me of myself, someone with the time and inclination to put forth great food for my family and friends although she is not a chef.
All the rest (lumped in together) I do not watch and I do not care for.
Giada cooks what I cook, fresh ingredient italian cuisine. No earth shaking there. I had 4 immigrant italian grandparents too. And even though they were not famous hollywood producers and actresses, my one grandmother was a classically trained italian chef and baker.
SLOP (what we call Sandra Lee) and Rae Ray (Retchel) just are too damn perky and sunny and happy about it all. Cooking is work not a cheerleading contest. I think what Rae Ray cooks is junk. I cannot serve what she throws together at my house ever.
As for Ms Deen who I adore, I cannot make her food here either. (I am not afraid of butter/lard/crisco/mayo/cheese but Hubby has a cholestrol issue- for those who feel I am speaking against the fat that is why) I see her filling Emeril's shoes with her family of shows.
JerzeeTomato at 2:30PM on 11/29/07
I agree with Jerzee!
I do like Paula Deen, but I would never in a million years make or eat her food!
I love AB and always will. He approaches food very scientifically and imparts a wealth of knowledge. Tyler is OK,. And of course I love Bobby Flay. He may be a jerk, but the man can cook. I don’t eat meat but I still watch his grilling shows (they’ve undergone a series of name changes) to get ideas on interesting flavor combinations.
Giada is a bobbleheaded twit whose food is on par with Raytard’s. As much as I can’t stand Raytard, at least she doesn’t claim to be a chef and she fully admits she has zero training and has no idea why she’s on TV.
I’m not even going to bother commenting on Dave Lieberman because he’s not worth my breath.
I loved Mario Eats Italy (remember his sidekick? He shows up on Good Eats every now and then), Melting Pot (with Cat Cora, Michael Symon, and their talented guests – but seriously why was Padma Lakshmi ever on it?)
I dearly miss Gale Gand and her Sweet Dreams and Jacques Torres and his insane chocolate confections that you could never make at home but loved to watch being made. Of course no one has time to bake now so we just all make crappy 30 minutes meals and feed slop to our families. Lovely.

Alton, Mario, Melting Pot, Emeril (essence not live)
nelson5757 at 3:22PM on 11/29/07
Would any of you who call these people names say something like that in person? Raytard? SLOP? Not worth your breath? If not, please, don't say it here.
You don't have to like their shows or their cooking. You don't have to like them ... but how do you know? These are TV personas we are seeing, not them.
But how about respectfully disagreeing instead of name calling?
kjgibson at 3:36PM on 11/29/07
I cannot respectfully disagree with someone that says YUM-O.

Food for thought, from Michael Ruhlman's blog:
"Elise Bauer wrote a thoughtful guest post on problogger yesterday (and cited a recent comment of mine) arguing that bloggers should be more restrictive of ugly or abusive comments. I've resisted deleting obnoxious or cowardly comments for the most part but have to agree with her now. She says treat her blog as you would her house. Good rule. My rule, don't write anything on my blog you wouldn't say to my face."
Sounds like words to live by ...
kjgibson at 4:31PM on 11/29/07
Good thought, but in my house I appreciate people speaking their own minds. And yes in real life I am a very vocal person, so I probly would say it out loud.
Lilartist at 4:40PM on 11/29/07
OK maybe I shouldn't call Rachael Ray "Raytard" because I don't know her in real life, but I will certainly call her food slop! And I know (used to know) Dave Lieberman in real life, so I am fully entitled to say that he's not worth my breath. Lilartist, your yum-o comment cracked me up :)

I was lucky enough to meet Emeril (a classy guy), and Giada (she came around the table when she was signing books and talked to every little kid that came through her line) - very classy, very pretty and I'm thrilled she's going to be a Mom. A friend met Mario and said he was joking and kidding when he was signing books.
I wouldn't go out of my way to meet Sandra Lee - oh my gosh - then I found out her best is Mary Hart - then I saw the correlation. Bobby Flay is too arrogant (although a good chef) and AB (as much as our family has loved him) has been bitten by the arrogant bug himself. Rachael Ray has been everywhere!!!! Too much is too much!!!
OK Food Network - why did you get rid of Ming Tsai, Wayne Harley Brachman and a host of other chefs who did Melting Pot? And I still think John Besh should have won the Iron Chef title!
Starrrent at 5:50PM on 11/29/07
our food network is a bit different here in canada. when it first started up i would watch it all day every day if i could. it seems weird but since food tv started i've had about a half dozen people who were quite close to me die. i found it was the one channel i could count on to distract me instead of depress me at those times. at other times, i just liked watching the shows/getting ideas. that said, it sure has changed. most of the people are beyond irritating. i remember the good old days of being irritated by molto mario, emeril, and michael lomonaco. now i'd gladly trade in giada, paula (though she amuses me with her craziness) and rachel to get them back.
my favourites are ina garten who is a bit of a hero to me. her life is just so phenomenally interesting, anthony bourdain and michael smith (canadian). oh and i watch iron chef just to see if jeffrey steingarten is on.
lexophile at 6:40PM on 11/29/07
I watch the canadian version as well. But I find it to be very similar with the US version. Both contain the same issues.
Lexophile - I really am a big fan of Micheal Smith to! I saw him once a few years back. That guy is enormously tall!
Lilartist at 7:09PM on 11/29/07
lilartist - i know he is enormous! haha. i haven't seen him in person but you can just tell from how he towers over people on the show. he seems like such a nice, genuine person. also, i agree that foodtv canada is similar and has many of the same problems as the US version. what do you think of rob feenie? his cooking?
lexophile at 7:22PM on 11/29/07
I love Ina Garten, and Giada makes some tasty and easy to prepare dishes. I also love Paula Deen for being true to her Southern roots. Yes, every recipe of hers does begin with 1 stick of butter or cream cheese and ends with 2 cups of sour cream, but oh, they must be tasty!
foodie1 at 7:31PM on 11/29/07
I have to add that I, too, like Ina Garten. I think her and her husband are so cute together and I love when she makes food just for him. Plus, I think it's crazy that she seems to know every person in the Hamptons. I like her sense of quality, yet not over-the-top cooking--she reminds me of my good friend's mom, who also makes a good, satisfying meal. Yay Ina!
luswim06 at 7:49PM on 11/29/07
I would look Sandra Lee right in the eye and tell her she does not know how to cook and she has no right to "teach" cooking - a skill she clearly does not possess. Money (her now ex-husband's - not hers) purchased her "career" for her. I give her credit for being an effective goldigger and a world class boozehound - nothing more.
therealchiffonade at 9:26PM on 11/29/07
Giada is pure boobs and cleavage....
Kbear919 at 10:14PM on 11/29/07
I really like Ina Garten and Nigella Lawson, they're both the type of people I'd love to hang out with in the kitchen, drink coffee and just cook all day... I love Alton Brown because he actually teaches people to cook, the logic and science behind it.
Alm25 at 8:30AM on 11/30/07
I don't really watch much anymore, as the evenings are filled with silly shows that have little or no cooking in them anyway. But - in the olden days when I first got cable TV - I developed an interest in cooking and learned many things from the Two Hot Tamales. I would watch all evening, through Emeril, the Tamales, and I think David Rosengarten . Also really liked Sara Moulton. As soon as the in-studio audience showed up, it was time for me to tune out. I do love AB, although I haven't seen a new Good Eats in I don't know how long. As annoying as I find many of the shows, I do use the FoodTV website and have gotten plenty of good recipes. I want just the kitchen and the chef - leave the fake friends, the audience, the band et al behind please!
maryannm at 9:49AM on 11/30/07
I like Giada. I see why people can get annoyed with her persona, but for some reason, little things like her exaggerated pronunciation don't bother me (spa-gayyy-teee!).
I also have to admit that I watch Sandra Lee. I sit on my couch with my jaw dropped for the entire episode. I cannot believe that someone would serve some of her recipes, and I am in awe of her cultural insensitivity. Like a bad accident, I cannot tear myself away.
Glad to get this off my chest.
Kerosena at 10:31AM on 11/30/07
I like the Canadian ones better than the American.
The non-Canadians that I like include Ina Garten, Giada- although she's so pretty and polished that she reminds me that these shows are entertainment, Alton Brown and Bob Blumer. I also enjoy watching Ace of Cakes with Duff Goldman.
In Canada I like Michael Smith for his cooking style, though not his speaking style. His tone of voice sounds like talking to five year olds ("Now boys and girls, let's see what we can find in the pantry today..."). Christine Cushing and Anna Olson are fun to watch, and have talent to go with their looks (or "boobs and cleavage", as Kbear919 put it). There's a cool show called Food Jammers, which is similar to The Surreal Gourmet.
CanadianFoodieGirl at 11:15AM on 11/30/07
Giada stacked?
What is she like 4ft 5in?
Sandra Lee is stacked. I might watch her more and ignore the bad cooking if she was in a tube or tank top during some of her summery episodes.
And yeah she could make me a few stiff cocktails ;-))
Stiv61 at 11:39AM on 11/30/07
I concur with my fellow Canucks-Micheal Smith rocks. I have thoughts of going to PEI and finding his house just to see that pantry in person! (From Chef at Home). (Just thoughts-I'm not really a stalker!)
I also love Christine Cushing-watched her every night when her live show was on, and sometimes I catch reruns at 6 am when I'm leaving early for work. She knew what she was doing, and had other talented people on her show too.
I think the Canadian Food Network gets more British/Australian shows that the US-I suppose we're part of the Commonwealth and all. I'm in love with Nigella-she doesn't profess to be a pro but makes all kinds of yummy stuff. I also recently found Food Safari, which is educational and enjoyable.
I concur with others about AB-love him, but haven't seen a new episode in forever. I also enjoy Ace of Cakes-they do some crazy stuff on that show!
All told though, I watch less of it than I used to. I hope they get back to more cooking and demonstration type shows-enough of the various reality/competition things in my books (i.e. Top Chef, Next Iron Chef, Next Food Network Start, Superstar Chef Challenge, Food Network Cake Challenge etc.) Oy vey!
psychsarah at 12:25PM on 11/30/07
AB will be in my heart forever, even if he has gotten a tad arrogant. But as to most of the other chefs/cooks on TVFN, no. Not so much. I work in advertising. I understand that the network makes it's money by attracting certain demos, and that clearly, they seem to feel the kind of programming they currently airing is in line what their needs are. I respect that. That said, if I want to watch an actual cooking show, I hit up the PBS stations.
I think I may have mentioned this elsewhere, but I am a huge fan of the Sandra Lee show, as are many of my friends. It's for her brilliant cooking tips. It is because her food/stylescapes/clothing/everything is a trainwreck and great fun to watch.
rockykay at 12:59PM on 11/30/07
Rocky - you had me a little bit concerned until I read the last line...Whew!!!
chiff0nade at 1:01PM on 11/30/07
For rarely fail recipes and gosh-I-want-her-life daydreaming, I love Ina Garten. I'd credit her with most of my food knowledge.
The rest of the credit belongs to Alton Brown. I love the Bill Nye The Science Guy-esque shows, silly humor, and great information. And I think Feasting On Asphalt deserves some sort of award.
Lastly, as with most people, I wish Paula Deen were my grandmother. Or, actually I'll take her as my mother-in-law (that Bobby Deen is cute!). She's lately become a bit too much for me to handle on Paula's Party, but I love her old episodes and her recipes are great for holiday decadence.
LizNYC at 1:19PM on 11/30/07
Alton is my fav followed a close second by Mario. Giada is good once in a while. Dont care for her weekend getaway shows though. Paula I have to agree is fun to watch but most of her food is just to heavy.
huney_bumper at 2:54PM on 11/30/07
bob blumer of the surreal gourmet is canadian. he is totally nutty but his glutton for punishment show is fantastic. i forgot about him. he was on christine cushing live one time and they were both somewhat drunk and dropped mashed potatoes all over the floor. it was so funny and great.
also there is an australian asian lady i think her name is kylie kwong. it is fascinating to watch her just because the accent runs so counter to what you expect her to sound like. mesmerizing.
lexophile at 3:34PM on 11/30/07
I like Ina Garten from Barefoot Contessa!

There are "TV Chefs" and then there are chefs who do TV. Both serve a purpose. I tend to pass over the "TV Chefs" in favor of more serious cooking fare but there's no denying that the Food Network even at it's worse Rachael Ray moments brings the world of food to a broad range of viewers who might not otherwise be exposed to kitchen how-to. What I really find horrific are the real chefs pandering over-priced inferior quality cookware on the home shopping networks. I wonder what Julia Child would think?
kathyvegas at 11:05PM on 11/30/07
ina garten rules. i'm a giada fan as well. i've gotten to the point (granted it took 5 years) that i can make it through a 30 minute meal, but rachael ray really bothers me, and she's gotten worse over time. sandra lee and her darned cocktails and dreamscapes should have been scrapped long before emeril live and molto mario. i despise nigella lawson for reasons i can't even think of. i like alton and i love food science, but all those crazy skits on good eats are a bit much to take sometimes. i think there needs to be some additions to the food network, and i don't think guy fieri is cutting it!
deadhead22 at 11:54PM on 11/30/07
Anyone watch Hubert Keller?? He's amazing. His show is on PBS in a section of programming called "Create." (I think.) He makes the most beautiful food and is so fluent in his motions, he makes it look effortless. He has a heavy French accent so keep your ears wide open!
chiff0nade at 5:53PM on 12/01/07
I don't really watch FN anymore, but when I first started learning to cook, I found Giada and (as much as I hate to admit it) Rachel Ray helpful. At the time, I had never put together a homemade salsa, much less made a roux. TV cooks can give viewers a solid base in basic techniques - as a college student living in my first kitchen, Mario's handmade pasta seemed a bit out of reach. Basic sauces and marinades? I could handle them - and then move on.
KarynMC at 7:57PM on 12/01/07
I would in fact (and you guys know me by now) tell Rae Ray and SLOP what I think in a NY minute. No more no less. This forum is about FOOD and we are talking about FOOD. We are very passonate about FOOD. You may not agree. We respectfully respect the fact you may not agree. If you don't agree please tell us all about it. Don't try and edit our dispassionate struggle with bad (formerly known as) Foodtv personalities. It is in fact our opinions. There is room in the blogosphere for all of us. Even those who buy a pie then scoop it out into tarlet shells. EEEK!!!
JerzeeTomato at 2:11PM on 12/03/07
I'm with you 100% JerzeeTomato. Initially, I found this site while searching for a place to vent about Sandra Lee. God only knows what might have happened to me, had I not found this outlet.
PerkyMac at 2:54PM on 12/03/07
Paula sends me diving across the couch to hit the mute button on the remote control. Cannot stand the sound of that accent - and I spent 20 years south of the Mason-Dixon. Add the fact that I'm trying to segue my diet to one that I can live longer on, there is nothing for me in Paula.
I share the Alton love with most of the posters here. I'm a fan of Michael Symon. I started off thinking Guy was a jerk and have come to realize that we share some tastes. He is a total shill for the dives he visits though - his version of Giada's orgasm-when-you-taste-it reactions.
I'm thoroughly over - and today is just December 4th - totally done and over all of the holiday themed schlock.
Nursie at 2:09AM on 12/05/07
Another Canuk here - I too enjoy Michael Smith (mentioned him in another post I believe). I have not been to his home but I did eat at the Inn at Bay Fortune when he was the chef emeritus there. It was beautiful. I like Ina, Giada (didn't know she was with child - we must be getting older shows), AB (but I find it hard to see his shows due to timing issues. My daughter (age 8) is IN LOVE with Duff from Ace of Cakes. Paula is OK, I love her fried chicken, and since my husband is from the South, I have learned things from her that have been helpful. I love Kylie Kwong as well - really enjoy making Asian food and she's great.
Did the Food Network in the US ever carry The Two Fat Ladies (out of Britain)? That show seriously killed me laughing - they were great - the dry sense of humour was spectactular and some of the dishes they came up with!
Maureen at 9:36AM on 12/05/07
food wise, i love bobby flay, and ina makes some good looking stuff too, her food reminds me of the stuff you would find at a favorite small local brunch place of something haha. but i have to say i LOVE paula deen, i would not eat 98% of the food she cooks, but she is soooo damn entertaining to watch,
