'Fess Up...

OK, one last question about T-Giving. Who ran out Thursday morning to the store to grab last minute items and what were they? Mine were mushrooms and green beans, carrots, and sage.

* Added Mushrooms & Green Beans because we had nothing green.
* Carrots were bought to "re" make my carrot souffle because I was not happy with the first one.
* Sage was bought because our poor tired little plant didn't bear enough!

We didn't. We even refused to go out on Wednesday to the store because it was insane just on Monday!

I'm happy to say that I did not. However, I did keep modifying my FreshDirect order right up until the day before it was delivered.

We didn't head to the store ... but to say we'd left "a few things" back at our house a mile away would almost be an understatement!

Hey chiffonade, would you please email me, or Jaden at SteamyKitchen? Thanks!

of course, but I fail to see where the shame lies in that.

Mine was a planned visit to the local bakery for oven fresh dinner rolls.

If I had done that, I would have been doomed! I had to be organized in at least one respect! Though my husband did go out to buy bread which was planned.

Unplanned weirdness on TDay. Due to some car troubles, the event was relocated to my house (from halfway across the state) the night before.

So there was a relatively major shopping at 9am on The Day. Little minor stuff (more sage, celery, garlic, and onion) but also stuff for snacking for the houseguests arriving - cheese, crackers and the like, as well as breakfast food for the next morning, beverages and ice. And cleaning supplies - I wasn't even supposed to be home this weekend, let alone having guests!

All that was missing from my Turkey Day was a soundtrack of Yakkity Sax.

Miraculously I didn't have to run to the store OR make a frantic call to either of our mothers or my sister to have them bring something I forgot or ran out of. A Thanksgiving first!

I made a few trips. Once for a lemon and shallots, another for olive oil... there may have been a third. I was so embarrassed by the final trip I made someone else go.

A trip mid day to procure additional wine.

Not actually T-Day, but late in the day Wednesday, I ran out to get dill, cream cheese, and smoked salmon to add to the leftover poach salmon (from Tuesday night) to make a very good salmon spread appy.

My husband and I made an 11-hour drive to my in-laws for Thanksgiving. I was going to make a pumpkin pie, so I asked my MIL the week before to buy a pie crust. Little did I know she was going to buy a graham cracker pie crust. I was not sure that would work, and I couldn't check the Internet to be sure because they have a dial-up connection! So, we went to the store to buy a pie crust, and there were about five left in the freezer section, all with major cracks. Luckily, there was a package of rolled-up pie crust, and we got the last one. If I had time and plenty of ingredients, I would have made a crust. The freezer pie crust wasn't too great, but I choked it down with delicious home-made whipped cream!

We were originally going to be going out to dinner on Thursday, but due to last minute issues, we switched to a small home dinner, so we did all our shopping Wednesday night, and ended up with rib roast instead of turkey because of it.

I was all shopped and ready to go on the Sunday before. No need for another thing.

We made a mid-morning beer run. Company arrived from out of town and had previously insisted on buying the booze. Since I'd already picked up the wine, we graciously let him pick up the beer tab.

Does that count?

At 7:30 on Thanksgiving morning, pushing a cart containing a jar of applesauce, a tub of sour cream, and a one year old wearing a tasseled stocking cap, I was faced with six open checkout lanes. Each lane contained several heaping, turkey-heavy shopping carts.
I handed my harmonica to my 1 year old son.
Within twenty seconds, they had a lane opened for me.

That night, well past dinnertime. We were doing a repeat dinner on Friday, with son and DIL who couldn't make it on Thursday. But, when I went to prep my brine for turkey #2, the salt didn't dissolve (what the?). Had to run to the 24-hour CVS (only store still open) to buy a new container of salt.

Got the salt, it dissolved fine, turkey was delish. No worries.

Then, on Fri morn, realized I was out of unsalted butter. But, since it was Fri, stores were quiet. Of course, there were only a few pkgs of the butter left, but at least I got some!

I burned the bread I was toasting for the stuffing, so I ran out to Eli's Vinegar Factory for another loaf. Then I saw his cornbread muffins and turned my stuffing into a hybrid. But now that I think about it, I believe that happened Wednesday evening.

And, as an aside, ajeys - I always wondered if parents purposely let their kids carry on loudly in order to get out of the store faster, now I know it's true! I'd do the same :)

We stopped on the way to my brothers house for a bottle of wine and a can of chicken stock, which even though we were not doing anything to strenuous for dinner we thought was pretty good. Sadly as we were leaving the store we saw a woman in front of us with an overflowing cart of food/turkey. It was only sad b/c it was about 1:30 in the afternoon!!!!

i went twice, i am embarrassed to say. once for pie ingredients because i decided at the last minute that i could not LIVE without pecan pie for thanksgiving and then back again because i had gotten the butter and pecans, but had forgotten to buy flour {i used most of the flour to make the rolls i also decided that i couldn't live without...}

Liz - I envy you! A last minute trip to the Vinegar Factory!

Ajeys - that was a brilliant idea. But really, the people with lots of items should have offered to let you go ahead.

I'm so glad to see others had similar last-minute experiences.

And Jerzee is my hero for not having to go out at all!

LizNYC: I usually don't do it, but had I not we would have been standing there for a valuable 30 minutes.

chiff0nade: A lot of them actually had a guilty but territorial look on their face; "I feel bad about not letting you go ahead of me, but I have fifteen obnoxious relatives to feed in four hours and I haven't even started my prep work..."

The funny thing is the harmonica originated as a cuter, not-so-loud alternative to his very rare "shopping is boring" screaming fits. The supermarket employees usually think it's a riot but they could sense the tension that morning so they ushered through as quickly as possible.
