Chef TV - Coming Soon!
I have read a lot about Mario Batali and Anthony Bourdain not liking the whole 'Food Network' situation. I couldn't agree with them more. . .I hereby make a motion that Mario Batali and Anthony Bourdain start a new network. . .Chef TV. . . and let's get back to cooking!!
P.S. Sign Alton Brown with this new network also!

I think that people who cook like we do are now a minority group again. That is why the (formerly about) Foodtv is bringing on the semi-homemade yummo, cheesewhiz crowd.
Most people do not know that Scripps cable television network brands include FINE LIVING TV, Home & Garden Television (HGTV), Food Network and Do It Yourself (DIY)
Fine Living has better programming than Foodtv but some of the same sponsors.
Chef's never owned Scripps nor were they ever managing something of that scale, they just are the talent. Mario has so much going on it amazes me. Cookware, tv shows for PBS, his many restaurants http://www.mariobatali.com/restaurants.cfm books, appearances, a wine importing business.
Tony is a new father and his schedule with his show and appearances are mind blongling amounts of travel. Tony's show is on Travel Channel which belongs Discovery TV's networks and Epicurious is the Discovery Channel's main network.
I think if you just switch off the Foodtv and switch on Epicurious, PBS, Travel Channel and Fine Living you might find some acceptable foodie tv.
I even watch the new American Life Network that has Italian Food and Living and a bunch of new cooking shows that are fresh.
Cooking is going on just not so much on Foodtv. Real pity.
I would rather sit through Martha than anything on Foodtv 9 times out of 10. They replay Martha's daytime show on Fine Living TV at twice at night if you need a cooking fix.

I'd put some money behind this venture... lets go!!!!

Ditto to JerzeeTomato's comment. I also think Alton is to attached to FoodTV which is disappointing.

Do you remember the "Great Chefs" series by the Discovery Channel?
That was good! I was brought up on cooking shows on PBS. . .Loved it! Then when I saw Food Network I thought, WOW. . .there's my network. But just like in the 80's when MTV came on the air, everybody thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. . .then came the reality shows.
Oh wait. . .is history repeating itself. . .Food Network has done the same thing.
I guess I understand it better now knowing that a chef or group of chefs have never owned or operated that network so what do you expect. It's all about the ratings, not what us foodies can get out of it.
PBS still has some great cooking shows with Lidia B. and Mary Ann E.
I just saw Alton Brown in Cleveland, OH. Now there is some talent. His Good Eats programs are great! In my opinion they could easily be made into one hour shows and be more informative and more instructional.
What do you say AB?
Anyway. . .All the Home Cooks and City Chefs need to unite to create this new network devoted to COOKING!

Jerzee - I echo your most eloquent rant. All those shows you listed on PBS and Fine Living are great. I'd rather watch an ep of La Martha, even if it includes how to get the mold off a copper doorknob, vs. just about any given show on TVFN.
Makes me wonder if Ina, Michael, Giada and Alton are all just waiting for their contracts to expire so they can bolt?
the (formerly about) Foodtv is bringing on the semi-homemade yummo, cheesewhiz crowd.
Priceless.

I agree, Chef TV would be awesome. FoodNetwork doesn't cut it very much anymore as a "keep on in the background" channel for the day, now we just have to use more of our channels to find the "good" cooking and food shows.( And not to defend the semi-homemade crop of cooks on FoodNetwork now in anyway, I find them particularly annoying, but "semi" homemade is better than "no" homemade in some instances, especially when people are feeding their kids disgusting fast food everynight )
