Can I freeze my cooked turkey?

OK OK i jumped the gun and maked a 20lb turkey this weekend. I am a single human being. The yield was about 8lbs of meat. I cannot eat 8 lbs of turkey meat before it goes bad. Can i freeze some cooked turkey meat?

They sell already cooked frozen turkeys, so I really don't see any reason why you can't freeze your already cooked turkey meat. It might affect the taste of the turkey, but I am sure that this is a better thing than throwing away ruined food.....

Yes, you can freeze your cooked turkey....either in gravy or without. It should keep for 6 months safely.

Oh, gosh, yes. I do it all the time. Some of it's sliced, and the rest, which is rather untidy, I put in plastic bags marked "2 c. turkey" or whatever, and use it in casseroles or curries.

When I freeze cooked poultry I always always throw some chicken broth in the bag. Not much about 1/3 or 1/2 cup. Freezing tends to dry out the meat. Other than that just make sure you seal your container/ziplock bag tightly and get out as much as possible.

I do the same broth trick as JerzeeTomato, it has always worked well for me.

I freeze cooked turkey. As a matter of fact, I know I'm maxing out on leftover-turkey-ideas when I make turkey nachos.

To keep a good inventory of what you have, measure out the meat in whatever increment you like, mark ziplock bags with the info ("White meat - 1 lb. - 11.12.07") and put the smaller ziplocks in a really big ziplock.

Absolutely! My mom always does this and it's a great way to extend the leftovers for weeks to come. Mmmmm warm turkey and gravy sandwiches!

I just need to know.. What possessed you? Did you want to practice before the big day? Did you win one and already have one? Do tell...

it was 38 cents a pound which meant I got a 20lb turkey for about 7 bucks...i thought I couldn't pass it up!

KB - sounds like a good reason to me. Just quit eating your leftovers early enough before the big day so you still want turkey!

My mum always did this too. It was great we could have 'left over' thanksgiving turkey for months.
