Best Food to cure a cold??

Thanksgiving brought me a whopper of a cold--runny nose, congestion, sore throat. What food cures the nasty cold best? I need to be well by Tuesday when I fly to Bangkok.

25 Comments:

I'm a believer in the old sawhorses of chicken soup and fresh-squeezed orange juice. I'm sure other people will have more unexpected suggestions.

Garlic works wonders.

Pho, with lots of cilantro and hot sauce.

I'll have to GO with PHO also..with a hot gingery broth.

one head (or more) of garlic chopped and lightly sauteed
add chopped tomatoes - fresh or canned with juice
add pinch of cayenne or red pepper flakes
add broth - chicken or veg and allow to heat through
you can eat it this way or...
add
fresh spinach and let it wilt
and/or
one egg and stir as in egg drop soup

Chicken Soup. They don't call it Jewish Penicillin for nothing.

Pasta with marinara. I don't know why but this is my go to food when I don't feel well - and I'm not Italian!

raw honey, lemons, raw garlic (in anything or by itself) and lots of Vit. C. Oh, rest and broth.

Tea! Loose-leaf tea, properly brewed in a tea pot. With lemon or honey. Gallons of it. That's what gets me through a cold.

Vitamin D has been studied a lot recently. The findings are astonishingly consistent that this is the REAL immunity vitamin (not vit. C). So, take your cod liver oil (you can get it in capsules), and eat lots of food rich in D.

I also second the hot brothy soup -- chicken is always an excellent one, but anything steamy will do, as it helps clear the respiratory tract. Try Italian Wedding Soup -- not only do you get that great chicken broth, but the addition of the greens packs it with a great anti-ox punch.

Hope you feel well soon. There's nothing worse than being on a long, global flight with a cold!!!

So, not necessarily a specific food, but be sure to eat healthy and drink plenty of liquid! Give your body what it needs. I'm no doctor, but I know that I always feel my best after eating lots of protein, whole grains, fruits, veggies, and water! Tea and hot cider are great too.

Lots of plain hot water and lots of sleep.

I say Pho also. AND - vietnamese rice porridge. I don't know the exact proportions but the ingredients are:

Rice
Chicken broth
Chicken breast
Ginger
Garlic
Fish sauce

garnish with green onions and cilantro

*also good to add some hot chili sauce.

This does wonders for me when I am sick!

Oh. And oatmeal.

I like spicy stuff to get the nose running-whatever your fave spicy dish is, serve it up. I like anything with lots of ginger and garlic too.

Tomato soup - preferably the old fashioned canned kind from Campbell's! Must be a throw back to my childhood.....

Does whiskey count as a food? It gets my vote, as does anything spicy.

The only thing I want to eat when I get sick are Big Macs and french fries. I don't know why this is, as I really don't get BM cravings unless I'm all Camilled out in bed.

And I want my grandmother's hot ginger-lemonade, which always makes me feel better (steep 4 tbs of freshly grated ginger in 16 oz boiled water for 8 minutes, strain, add 2 tbs lemon juice, 1tbs honey, and a pinch of cayenne pepper, drink from dainty china cups.) and I'm sure is good for you.

I'm with K - the best thing you can do is drink as much water as you can stand (throw in a few Emergen-Cs for good measure) and get plenty of rest!

Knudsen's Lemon Ginger Echinacha Juice - heated up like hot apple cider. It works every time...

Garlic, ginger, and anything spicy!
I'm also a fan of Airborne (not food, I know) before flying anywhere...

Pho, ginger and green tea, and oranges

Clear chicken broth with loads of fresh parsley, tiny pasta, and an egg beaten in. Add some lemon juice or sriracha at the end. Yummy and healing at the same time!

ginger, garlic, salt, hot liquids, spicy food
