Anyone have a good mulled wine recipe?
I feel winter coming on.... Last Christmas, I had mulled wine for the first time and it was delicious and warming. Anyone have a good recipe?

I'll anxiously await the recipes from serious eaters, but in the meantime...the mulled wine at The Dove bar in NYC is tasty and affordable :)

Take a fruity red, and add sugar to taste (I like it with about 1/2 cup per bottle). Add a couple of cinnamon sticks, a few grinds of nutmeg, and a couple of whole cloves (if you like them). Warm over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Just before serving, add a large piece of lemon and orange zest and allow to steep for a couple of minutes.
Occasionally, I'll add a vanilla bean as well, which certainly amplifies any vanilla flavors in the wine!

Here is my sister's Mulled Wine...best I've ever had. Warm in saucepan w/ slices of orange and a cinnamon stick or serve over ice in summer w/ a twist of lemon!
4 cups water
4 cups sugar
6 whole cinnamon sticks
2 Tablespoons whole cloves
Combine the above in a 2 gallon non-reactive (stainless or lined) pot. Bring to slow simmer and stir to dissolve sugar.
Steep 5 teabags in 5 cups boiling water.
Add tea and the following to the spiced water:
1cup each pineapple juice, orange juice, lemon juice, brandy, rum, and bourbon
Add one gallon burgundy wine
warm all ingredients in pot. Cool and funnel into sterilized wine bottles with a cinnamon stick and a few cloves. Will store about a year (though it won't last that long).
Makes your home smell like christmas!

This yummy recipe is compliments of Mirassou Winery in CA:
3 cups water 12 cloves
1 cup sugar peel of 1 lemon
1 cinnamon stick
Simmer 10 mins, then add:
1/2 cup brandy
2 (750 ml) dry red wine
Do not boil. Bring to coffee temp.

My ex-mother-in-law made a yummy mulled wine that is one of the only traditions I have carried past that relationship... And it all relied on the Williams-Sonoma mulling spices and the recipe provided in the can... Red wine, orange juice, a touch of sugar, and the mulling spices - if memory serves - throw it all together in a crock pot and heat until warm and then reduce temp to low to hold and Happy Holidays to you!

Great topic & recipes! I'm having a holiday party next weekend and was hoping to make mulled wine as well. I wonder if anyone will even be able to walk straight after consuming a few cups of holiday cheer...
