What bread makes the best toast?

Toast is not just for breakfast---it can be the beginning for an appetizer, sandwich, entree or snax . I have even heard of toast being used for a dessert recipe! I tend to like breads containing nuts for toasting---cinnamon raisin walnut or sunflower kernal. What's your best toasted piece of bread? Stand alone or used in a recipe?

i'm a sucker for toasting day old wood oven bread. Preferably sourdough or a dark rye. And then smothered with a home made jam- none of that jelly like crap
And does toasting pita bread count? And Corn tortillas? Perfect with dips ^^

Great question! I have two favorites:

1. Rye -- with just the barest minimum of butter (Mom loves it topped with cottage cheese).
2. Calandra's Panella -- After Calandra's there is no other Italian bread for me. I'd have it any way I could. I know it's not toast, but it makes a fantastic grilled provolone sandwich.

Love peasant bread as toast. It's a great "platform" on which to build other dishes but it's interesting enough to be enjoyed just for what it is.

For me, it's all about the crunch. I like my toast to know it's toasted and not be served "warmed up bread." Baguette (sourdough or otherwise) is also a favorite.

If I'm in the mood for something sweeter, cinnamon bread is a fave.

Great for toast but also fan-TAS-tic "straight up": Semolina bread with golden raisins and fennel from Amy's Bread. Yum!! Also makes great PB sandwiches.

Rye or sourdough.

I love toasted cinnamon bread for a sweet snack, but if I'm looking for toast that I like to spread jelly on, I like challah toast!

The San Luis bakery makes a cracked wheat sourdough that is great toasted. It has a little tang and like, chiffOnade, I agree that it's got to be crunchy. No warm bread, give me toast!

For a plain bread with jam, I love brioche (especially Eli's). For a fancier stuff-in-it-just-needs-butter kind of toast, I've always loved Sun-Maid raisin bread.

Either rustic peasant bread or sourdough, either for just eating w/ butter and jam or as part of a sandwich.

I love toasting Rose Levy Berenbaum's ricotta cheese bread from The Bread Bible. Doesn't need buttering, but a little honey never killed anyone...well, don't give the honey to kids under the age of two!

Challah. And super fresh Italian. A crispy, toasty outside with a light, spongy inside. Oh yea. Oh! And with Earth Balance and cinnamon sugar on top.

malt bread without raisins toasted and then buttered is one of the all time best toast experiences. it's chewy and crunchy and so flavorful!

These days I tend to have leftover Acme Ciabatta in our kitchen - which goes ridiculously well with a healthy schmear of Nutella.

English muffin bread and banana bread, oh jeez, gotta run and get some bananas now...
