Salted Caramel
Am I the only one who is totally tired of the ubiquity of salted caramel, and, in particular, when people think they're very clever when they use it? I think I might be a little jaded because I'm from NYC, where salted caramel has been around for a few years.
What do you guys think? And am I being a huge food snob??? :)

I'm a native NYer myself, and I don't follow food trends. If I like it, I eat it. And, of course, salted caramel has been around a lot longer than it has been trendy.

I know what you mean, but it's a little snobbish :-) Just embrace your snobbery and you'll be ok! Remember, it's fun to be ahead of the curve, but just because the rest of the world has caught up doesn't make the food bad (or even tired).
Seriously though, as previous posters have said -- if it's good enjoy it. If a candy shop is touting salted caramels (or a fanicer variation on the theme -- like "fleur de sel" caramels or "gray salt" caramels) as the next big thing in NYC it would seem strange. But in south Florida, I would say that it is less ubiquitous. As a sweet-n-salty lover, I seek them out where I can find them (or more recently have made them from scratch).

I was unaware of this trend but it seems as though it has hit ice cream and if you love salted caramel, start looking for it as an ice cream flavor, which Chow just wrote up.
I live in San Fran and one new, super trendy -- in the best sense-- ice cream place (Bi-Rite Creamery) features it. People are talking about it! It takes me back to Cracker Jacks, a childhood fav of mine.
The only prob with the ice cream is that it gets soft -- due to the salt and how that plays with temperature? I recommend it though. You can also make this kind of ice cream at home but try it with Tamari a friend told me. I don't have time for that... but maybe you do!

Snob alert! Just kidding. I know what you mean--I totally feel the same way when I see a "tuna tartare" show up on a menu and think that that was *so* yesterday. Salted caramels, however, doesn't really toot my horn as I think they're truly delectable! If ever in Paris, the salted caramels at George V at the Four Seasons are to die for, people.

I'm still a fan. There are plenty of other trends that I'm waiting to fizzle out, though, so don't worry...

Why does it have to be labeled a trend? Are you so tired of sushi? Or good hamburgers? Salted caramel is yummy, like salted chocolate, and I for one, hope that it sticks.

I wasn't aware that they were a trend. I love them, having discovered them on a french food site I occasionally order from. I've given them to several people, who were unaware salted caramel existed and for the most part, they've enjoyed it also. I live in NYC, so I'm trying to figure out how I managed to miss the whole trend thing.

Yep, you're jaded ;-)
For those of us out here in the hinterlands, salted caramels are just a delicious treat that occasionally show up at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods, at which point we buy several packages and eat them with lip-smacking relish.
Of course, I like tuna tartare too.
